Texas A&M Class of 2029 Official Thread

Auto acceptance isn’t ’time stamped’.
Mid September (dates vary year-to-year) those that are auto, that applied early (I feel certain Office or Admissions has their own cut-off date for the 1st round), will all receive auto admission in waves-usually 1-3 days initially. Some may receive it early in the morning, more after lunch that day, some don’t get acceptance until the next day. It’ll come in batches, over a day or two.

The ‘time stamp’ is the actual time stamp the $75 non-refundable Housing deposit is paid. That time stamp is what places student in the dorm selection queue in April. Housing deposit button/link doesn’t open immediately, it’s usually an hour-ish later, before deposit can be paid. It’s a 2 step process.

First time on here and definitely new to this whole process and experience. :face_with_peeking_eye:

My son’s first choice is to attend TAMU’s VIZ program. He’s not an auto-admit (12% in his class of almost 500), SAT 1270 (good, but not great), AP Scholar with Honors (4-AP US Hist, 4-AP Calculus AB, 4-AP Bio, 3-Eng Lang), on tennis team thru HS, 100+ volunteer hours, taking Animation track in HS, co-wrote/illustrated a 6-book comic ebook series (from 7-10th grade), has a YT channel for his animations with 27k subscribers, teaching himself Blender over the summer. He’s serious and focused on becoming a professional animator.

For anyone that has info/insights on the VIZ, please tell it to me straight.
How fast do the slots fill for VIZ (any observations on specific time frames from past couple of years)? Approx. what percentage are 10% auto-admits? I’m so nervous that auto-admits will fill up the program before he gets to have his application even considered.

@Christi1993 and @FriscoDad can give details and stats.
But not auto and his SAT, almost with certainty, won’t get him into VIz. Viz is super small, highly competitive, fills almost immediately.
Make sure he lists a 2nd major option he’d be happy with, and not Business or Engineering (which are also very competitive), and a major he can take classes to hopefully apply for a change of major into Viz (which is also incredibly tough to do, but is possible).

Appreciate the reply - looks like an uphill battle. We’ll wait and see how this plays out. :folded_hands:

Trust he’s already submitted his application? If so, what 2nd major did he list?

Yes, submitted on Common App yesterday. He put Architecture as second choice.

That’s good!

Same!

@Jessica_R , you can run “Applied Admitted Enrolled” reports here.

Oddly, the data for Visualization seems to stop at Fall 2021 (i.e. before their department move to the new School of PVFA).

In that year, 242 out of 287 (84%) were Non-Top 10% first-time undergrads applying to Viz. Out of those non-top 10%, 42 were accepted (17.4%) … see screenshot.

Another edit: If the class is still roughly 100 (~80 freshman accepted each year + ~20 transfers), the class ends up being about half top 10% and half non-top 10%.

The data is grouped together under “School of performance, Visualization and Fine Arts” from 2022 onwards.

Right. But since multiple departments are grouped together in PVFA from 2022 on, you can’t tell what is Viz.

If he misses the timing of getting in freshman year for viz, I feel his resume is full of great experience that also demonstrates passion for the major. It is possible they look past SAT and see that and give him earlier than normal holistic review admission. If get 2nd choice. Definitely follow viz degree plan as much as possible (must be on the arch degree plan) but make sure he’s knocking out any requirements for change of major.

That’s a great point to bring up now… housing!!! I don’t think we’ve addressed it yet with this cycle

@ newly admitted students… as soon as you can, you need to apply for housing and pay the non refundable deposit IF you plan on living on campus. This time stamps you for your place in line to select housing late spring. There are several phases to complete before then… but phase 1 is the most important in regards to getting the best time (having the most options).

As for auto admits, we’ve already seen several days of 7 tabs. I believe they’ll continue to roll those out when they can and then switch over to holistic reviews.

True, but you can use deduction to find out.
Viz admitted around 130 freshmen with around 100 enrollment, about half are auto. So the rest are Fine Arts, performance and dance.

See if your student can improve the score. For holistic applicants, they will get two reviews if applying early, and most likely decision will come between January and March so as long as scores received by December deadline, it will be used in second review.

In AIS, submit document and extended resume to prove your student’s Visualization experience. (ebook, Blender…) Portfolio is not required and admission won’t have the knowledge to review the quality of the products, the idea is to provide evidence of experience.

So to be admitted and apply for housing does the 7 tabs count or do you need the official acceptance letter?

Once your student gets 7 tabs in Howdy, in a few days (or as fast as 24 hours), housing application is opened. Pay that $75 asap if your students want to live on campus. Picking dorm priority depends on the time stamp of paying that $75.

In order to apply for housing, student must have acceptance, and Housing tab/link will appear ‘active’ about 45 min-1 hour after acceptance is official in Howdy.

First wave starts very early in the morning, on a school day. Credit card required, 2 step process, not complete until student gets a notification - “next step is phase 2”.

^the mid-late September timeline has been since 2019; who knows, it could change (acceptances rolling out earlier?)

Isn’t the time stamp for application “date submitted” anyway? May not mean much for holistic review, like you mention.
