Good morning - my daughter applied on 8/21, SRAR and transcript uploaded on 8/30, curriculum verification form on 9/5. She applied test optional.
She is ranked 1st out of 8 seniors (4.0 unweighted gpa, 18 hours of DC, lots of ECs, 2 part-time jobs) at a very small, private high school that ranks when they have more than 5 students in a class.
Does anyone know if she will be considered for top 10% admission even though there is technically not a top 10% in her class (10% of 8 is .80 of a person)? We have green check marks and 1st quarter rank in AIS. She chose Agribusiness as first choice major and Rangeland Management as second choice.
I second the Davis-Gary suggestion. It wasn’t single rooms when I lived there 20+ years ago, but I absolutely loved it–lived there for 3 years (and only moved out then because I got married LOL).
Son got his admission last night and registered for housing this morning!
Strong chance for Honors Engineering but any general thoughts on that dorm or other options? He likes the idea of being with another student who takes grades seriously and doesn’t drink so he doesn’t want to room with a party animal though he’s not excited about how the dorm itself looks. Considering applying for University Honors for the better dorms but it seems like a pain in the butt as well program.
University Honors (UH) stays in Lecher & McFadden, not sure I’d consider those ‘better’? I’d research the UH program, and take a tour of their dorms.
Just because a student is in any ‘honors’ program, doesn’t guarantee they won’t drink.
And students living in all other dorms aren’t necessarily ‘party animals’.
@KaiserSoze17 , if you’re referring to ECOS (the Honors section of the Engineering LLC), then my D26 did that her freshman year. She enjoyed it. You get what you put into it. I don’t have time for full writeup. Any specific questions?
If your son prefers a Modular over a Commons-style room, he can just be selective with his roommate choice and stay in the preferred dorm style.
As a side note, University Honors no longer requires staying in the honors dorm. It’s optional now. See the new Fall 2025 info online.
One other thing, and it might affect those reading who are doing Phase 2 today, do your research on LLC. Once you pick it, you go down a fork in the process. If you change your mind a few months later, to get back into the general group, you start at the end of the line. Someone made that mistake in last year’s thread.
Wow! I’m guessing a couple reasons for change in no required UH housing as a freshman-
*hoping to get more UH applicants?
*freeing up 2 dorms for all students? Especially since they’re Northside Modulars.
INTERESTING!
And about not signing up for LLC unless student is CERTAIN! Change your mind later on, and you go to the bottom of the selection list, regardless of when deposit was paid.
Understand there is a roll of the dice with any roommate, even if you know them beforehand. My point is more that someone else in Honors Engineering and wanting to live in that dorm are more likely to be academically focused and not wanting to live out Animal House. I don’t think he cares if his roommate drinks and my son is very active and pretty laid back, he just doesn’t want someone that is going to school to party and be a distraction. In a random assignment the odds are better you end up with someone like that but there are no guarantees.
Lechner and McFadden just look a little nicer than the Commons area, they were when I was in school long ago as well.
Have you been to the Commons in the past few years after they completely remodeled everything? The Modulars actually feel really old compared to Mosher (ECOS). Now if space was a concern, sure, Modulars are much more spacious.
Also, you wrote “random assignment” … your roommate is not assigned. You actually do pick a roommate from the Roommate Finder database for the Engineering LLC. You just don’t get to pick the actual room; the LLC will assign that. So, you will get “random” suitemates (people next door sharing your bathroom). But if you don’t like them, just shut the bathroom door.
One minor note, the roommate pool is smaller for the LLC. In the Honors Engineering LLC (not to be confused with the larger General Engineering LLC), when my D26 went to find a roommate, there were only ~50 girls to pick from. No idea how many guys. Surely you can find someone you can get along with (part of college is about learning to deal with people), but just thought I’d point that out.
I understand, certainly that’s part of it and I know it’s not truly “random” but it is someone you don’t know typically. My elder son actually picked a kid he DID know and it didn’t work out . My point is just trying to figure out his best chance to get a roommate he will be compatible with in a dorm he will like but in the end you can only try.
My main point of reference was when I was in school and things have changed a lot. He’ll be Engineering obviously but I don’t know for his Freshman classes if it really matters where he is, I know later on it will all be around Zachry. He’ll be fine either way, just trying to get perspectives on folks who have more recent experience.
Yes, it has indeed changed a lot. I myself lived in the Commons back in the 90s. It’s so much nicer now. If you haven’t visited in person lately, you should go. Or at least look at the photos online and watch some people’s dorm tours on YouTube.
Freshman classes will be all over campus, so he’ll be fine at any dorm. But if he really wants a studious, serious, no-nonsense Engineering roommate, then perhaps his odds are increased in the Engineering Honors LLC.
(Sorry, we’ve gone off on a tangent while a bunch of other people are waiting to get accepted. I expected to see a new “Admitted Class of 2029” thread by now.)
'29 just got an email “invitation” to Destination Aggieland in October. Is this a thing? We already did Aggieland Saturday. Is this basically the same thing? Trying to see if it’s worth trying to make it work.
Happy Thursday! I am familiar with the University Honors program but would love to hear more if you all have any input. A&M is my #1! Gig ‘em Applied Business as first, Communications second choice.
