I believe Texas state law is 90% in state and A&M is running 92/93%.
That said our admissions should emulate Georgia Tech imo. They do an early round just for in state and then the OOS is a few weeks later. The in state kids find out in December and the OOS kids find out in Mid January but that is AFTER the Regular Decision deadline so they are being compared against the full group of applicants. Just lots of advantages for In State kids and they don’t do Top 10% but rather try to make sure they get kids from every county and favor Rural students. It’s a clear and fair system that favors the right groups and has made their ranking soar to where now they are generally considered the best Public Engineering school.
We were told there is a Guaranteed Admission (law) for in-state Students who RANK in the Top 10% of their class, when I looked it up, it matched with the link below…
We were told otherwise that after all the TOP 10% Ranked Students are accepted, all other applications are holistically reviewed without regard for IN or OOS. Because OOS is so expensive, the percentages remain low 5-7%.
If we are incorrect, please let us know… Thank you & Happy New Year
Yes, Top 10% rule is definitely law as is the less talked about 90% law which simply hasn’t been an issue (though it may start to be at Texas). Texas as a state just produces so many great students and there is a big drop off among the public schools from Texas and A&M to the rest. I just think the Top 10% rule is short sighted in a state this large and with such a dropoff from A&M/Texas to the next public school and with the PUF that isn’t changing. We just have a lot of clumsy policy.
OOS admission is handled differently as Top 10% rule doesn’t apply for auto admit.
There are definitely more holistic full admit offers coming. Once we hit February, they are few and far between and more alternative pathway offers come. Typically gateway and a round of team hear late January.
Hi! I know scholarships are super rare, but I had a small question. I have seen a couple posts in this thread about Business Honors/Mays Departmental scholarships. Is anyone aware of departmental scholarships for Poli Sci? Also, when are scholarships expected to be awarded/dispersed?
Generally, departmental scholarships for freshmen are extremely rare. My son did receive them, but they are so rare that we had an extremely difficult time finding out from anyone about whether they qualified as “competitive” for the $4k needed to receive the OOS tuition waiver. So rare that at the “resource fair” for OOS students that we were at, when I showed them to the financial aid person there they were completely clueless and surprised to see anyone that had them.
My son received an email about them in February of that year, if i recall correctly. We had to make a giant leap of faith that they would count for the $$ needed for the OOS waiver and he signed up for orientation on April 29th that year. The scholarships and the OOS waiver didn’t show up in his portal until August. Our experience since has been that departmental scholarships are awarded in his department in July of each year. If lucky enough, to keep the OOS waiver you then have to earn new scholarships every year.
Okay awesome, I am involved in a niche sport and hoping that helps with an OOS tuition waiver (the organization can only offer so much tho). Thanks! Any hope is any
Yes, I have been keeping in touch with the coaches since freshman year. I’ve had a few setbacks within the sport, but they’ve continued to communicate with me about my potential. It’s just a small rec sport, so receiving funds for the organization is super difficult.
@RoryMaM are you NM Semi/F or even Commended? If not, a competitive academic scholarship will be next to impossible.
Business Honors is different than all other programs, as it’s a stand alone major (not just a program), and has many endowed BH specific scholarships. The bulk of Mays scholarship $ goes for BH students, certainly incoming freshman.
Haven’t heard of PoliSci specific, but most departmental scholarships are for returning/upperclassmen; and I doubt = $4k per year (which is needed to get in-state rate).
No idea about Archery, especially if it’s a club/rec sport, and not D1.
How much is the A&M tuition for Out Of State? According to their calculator Tuition Calculator - Texas A&M University (only has current year data) - it says tuition is about ~19K? is that a year or per semester?
