Texas A&M Class of 2029 Official Thread

How are Quarter Ranks assigned when school does not rank? Esp when High school is college Prep Private with High Academic Rigor?

Interesting but do you know their methodology? How do they take the info and transact it into a quartile rank? TY

I bet @FriscoDad and/or @Christi1993 can shed light.

2nd qtr.
3.8gpa/28ACT,
small private school/does not rank.
Applied early October.
Major: International Affairs (1st choice) PolySci (2nd)
Hopes/Plans to do Corp Cadets

In state student (sorry forgot to mention)

I’m not an expert, but 2ndQ and 28 ACT most likely won’t get a full acceptance. Did they select the Blinn TEAM consideration when applying?

Most likely Team offer. Possibly a gateway offer. That would be ideal too. If wanting corps, he’s still eligible on Team so that’s a plus. If he gets offered the 3 choices and is okay with team… then accept it!!!

FYI, my son is in state and goes to a public school. His class is 900 students and his rank is top 18%. He applied to Engineering on Nov 1, and he is full accepted on Nov 22. So don’t lose hope. As long as your application is solid, everything is possible!

Is gateway still a program? I had heard they might not have it this year. What type of applicant usually receives a Gateway offer?

I haven’t heard anything of the sort, so hopefully not. It’s a great program.

As far as what type of applicant is selected for this pathway… it was intended for those that may need help going into college with time management, study skills, and little to no outside help from family. To give them the best chance at success in college. It has evolved into more than that, but I honestly can’t see a common denominator on who they select for this.

Okay, so he’s my first born, so this is our first go with applications and clearly A&M is unique for a number of reasons. I’ve read the different pathways, but Id really prefer to get the straight-forward, inside scoop on them. Really would like to know what the best (to least favorable) option is and why. If there are limitations and or reasons why it would be beneficial to stay somewhere local his freshman year (dfw) and then apply to transfer? The MAIN reason A&M is his favorite and #1 choice is bc of the corp. He went to Texas Boys State this summer and it really ignited a fire to study international relations, with the goal to join the Air Force and go to law school. The Corp really checks all the boxes for him when it comes to personal interests, fraternal bond and tradition. Any specific advice (knowing this info) is SO APPRECIATED. I’m really trying to tell him that getting a pathway option is NOT a bad thing. THANKS IN ADVANCE!

In order of favorable to still doable:
Full admit (Corps)
Gateway (Corps)
Blinn Team (Corps)
PSA
Straight Blinn and transfer or other CC and transfer then Corps

IF PSA/CC transfer, follow the transfer requirements to a T. Happy to look over and advise if you want an extra set of eyes… but who knows, may not come to that!

ALSO… Has he thought about TAMU Galveston? There’s no International Relations major but he could go in under Maritime Studies (has some global components).. than change majors into TAMU main campus to International Affairs. Could happen as early as Spring semester freshman year but could lose housing cost for that semester. But he could also join the corps there.

Lots of options to get him where he wants to be. FYI his major will not affect his law school admittance decision… truly based on LSAT and GPA (military experience will help too). but major… not a factor at all for law school. There are no course requirements like you would have in Med school or health related post grad school.

@cmoh I agree with @Christi1993’s suggestion of TAMUG! It’s a hidden gem campus, classes are much smaller, dorms right on the water AND they have the Corps!
While waiting for pathway offer, I’d suggest submitting TAMUG application.

Can you help me understand why gateway is better than Blinn team? New to all this

I love TAMUG and have a son in the Maritime Academy. That said the Corps in Galveston is VERY different than the one in CS. 90% of the guys in the Corps in Galveston are getting a Maritime License and they focus around training you to work on a ship. It’s not about personal character development in the same way as CS. Outside of O Week for instance you really don’t have yelling and big Class differentiation, it’s more about professional preparation. I was in the CS Corps. There it is all about character development and leadership and less than half the folks are going contract and if they are they could be going in all kinds of specialties.

I do know of a kid that did a year in the TAMUG Corps and then went to CS Corps and another who didn’t do TAMUG Corps and went to CS Corps. Both have done well (one is now a Marine Officer, the other is a Junior in Engineering.

Galveston has a lot of pluses and minuses, as busy as CS is Galveston is the exact opposite. It’s a great place to focus on school and make grades though with smaller class sizes and good profs. People actually tend to make higher grades who take more hours there becuase they simply don’t have time to get bored. My son took 22 and 23 hours in consecutive Semesters and got a 4.0 both times. It’s not a place with a ton of clubs and activities and parties to go to. They do get the best seats for Aggie Football though, my son was 3rd Deck 40 yard line 1st Row for Texas this year and Bama last year and he didn’t have to wait in any line.

Because it’s basically full admission right out of the gate as long as they don’t mess up in the summer, which if the kid is motivated to make it work, there is a lot of support in place to make sure they make it. But Blinn TEAM is still a great option + easier on the wallet.

And I’ll add on… gateway is expensive because summer school is expensive but they live on campus (only go to 2nd summer session) they are given the tools to succeed. They get to learn the ropes if campus living in a less chaotic environment. And then they start freshman year as general studies and work with advisor to move into desired major.

Definitely viewed higher than Blinn because Blinn is a 1-2 year program before you’re only at Tamu. But both are great pathways! Both end up helping the student!!!

Hey all! I applied to Mays this cycle to be a fall 2025 freshman, but since it gets full relatively quick, I’m hoping for a Blinn Team offer. Does anyone know around when those decisions start rolling out?
