Oh, no, @garland . I hope he’s able to get it running.
Nope. He left with many apologies and suggested we call PSEG. We have an appointment for tomorrow…
Wow, not a good outcome, garland!
Wow–I hope you have good fireplace!
D, as usual, asked while I was picking up the precooked turkey for 4-6 (we are 6 and only 5 turkey eaters) to add 2-3 more. She always does this so I should have been prepared. I add a 2 lb Turkey breast just in case. Plenty of food but as I did buy more than usual (making a potato dish and large appetizer platter/dip only) I wish our guests like to drink more than a half glass of wine… so no one would notice if the food is as good as homemade.
Garland, I can so relate. We spent 4 weeks last winter (Christmas and NYE included!) without heat. Incompetent plumbers should rot in hell.
On a lighter note:

Have a peaceful turkey dinner! ![]()
@Nrdsb4 I probably will make the gravy today & then mix it in with what I make from the roasted turkey tomorrow.
@BunsenBurner --they have always been competent before. this was totally not expected. Couldn’t be worse timing. Oh well. D and almost-baby are doing well, and so we will stay Thankful.
After three days of non-stop cat herding at work, I will just chill out tonight and get cooking tomorrow…
Well, I set the table with a mix of three sets of china. It looks great, but is a squeeze for nine people. And my ex-husband just called and invited himself. He was supposed to drive out of state to visit relatives but was having back problems so he stayed behind while his wife, son, and the rest of his family went. We are on friendly terms, but I really don’t want another body. And I don’t want to share our children and their wife/BF with him. I would cry if I thought it would do any good.
@garland - sorry, I was talking about our plumbers.
We mistakenly called the warranty company (gifted to us by our realtor). They started sending in plumbers. The first one looked at the boiler as if it was a creature from Mars. The second one did not have the parts and disappeared into a black hole. Finally, we fired the American Home Shield (what a joke they are), and I found the people who fixed it for 1/2 the price others quoted (and did not deliver).
I mean, my assessment of our plumbers’ competence is a little shaken now, I will admit…
I have Sear’s Home Warranty. (planning to switch to AHS) The plumber they sent out today was great. I finally now have heat, running hot water, and other plumbing repairs completed. Crossing my fingers it works through the holiday and we don’t have to see him anytime soon. Also had a bird guard installed on my dryer vent yesterday since birds were going in and out of it. Came home to see the bird guard installed and two birds sitting on it wondering why they could no longer get in. (they did then fly away)
If everything is in working order in our home then Thanksgiving will be just perfect. Not worried about food for tomorrow. I am thankful to have all these things fixed. Knock on wood.
@garland Hope everything works out well for you. For some reason we always have house repairs around Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Cranberry sauce is made. I made two different recipes this year. Stuffing done, too. Tonight H and I will make the Sangria.
YIKES!!!
My goodness, just read back a few pages and saw all the home disasters! I think this thread is a jinx and I’m not going to open it again until after the holiday.
happy heat to everyone!
musicmom!!! Seriously? go ahead and cry because tomorrow you will be as nice as can be.
(and I hate it when someone messes with the number at my table) If you have a piano bench or such at one end it can cut down on the number of chairs. Two go there.
making my sweet potato romonoff now and just made a dip for the veggies. Done for today.
I am confused as to how to heat my already cooked turkey (small, never have seen such a small
turkey). It has instructions but the reheating time for it whole is about 35-40 minutes. I cannot imagine
it will be warm through. Anyone? I think it is 10 lbs, serves 4-6. Would you rub it with anything before
heating?
It is going to be very cold tonight. @garlard - maybe checking into a hotel as a pre-holiday gift?
We could stay with family, but if we’re here, we can run heaters and keep water trickling to stave off frozen pipes. It’s tempting though.
My steam boiler conked out last Christmas Eve. Yes to having spare space heaters.
Cooked today, only the upside down cranberry cake left to make. Spent too much time trying to figure out how an apple souffle could have no flour, no liquid other than eggs. Switched to a raw apple cake in a crown shaped bundt pan. I always worry it’ll be firm enough to get out of the mold intact, without being too dry. And it’s always fine.
The weather is beautiful today.
We eat early (about 1:00). Always have. When I was little, my grandfather worked for the railroad and volunteered to work holidays, partly for the holiday pay and partly to allow young men with families to be at home, so we always ate early before he went to work. Everyone skips breakfast so they can eat more turkey!
