Thanksgiving Travel Thread: Weather affecting your travel??

Yeah, my D’s flight was delayed but made it in time–they’d already given her seat away–not happy.

My oldest cleverly decided to take a whole week off. It’s been nice having him to hang out with. (And drag to the dentist.) Our youngest is taking the train from Boston tonight and I trust will beat the worst of the weather. Supposedly my nephew is also coming down from Boston, but he hasn’t bothered to tell me when he’s arriving. Sister-in-law was going to drive down tomorrow afternoon/evening, but understandably is getting cold feet about it. I suggested she just leave Thanksgiving Day, the traffic is usually much better and the weather should be too. I have no agenda for when we sit down to eat, and none of the meal requires fancy timing.

S plane left on time! He said it was snowing there, but nothing really huge.

Phew! I really feel like we dodged a bullet! Can’t wait to squeeze the stuffing out of him!

My S also took the week off and arrived yesterday, Dulles thru Chicago. Our D will be flying Burbank to Seattle then Honolulu tomorrow. Can’t wait! Haven’t heard anything bad about Seattle or LA weather so am hoping its all fine.

abasket, remember that the well-traveled main roads/highways are usually clear even if the side ones aren’t (except when the snow is coming down fast, which doesn’t seem to be the case). I am sure they will be fine.

Burbank to Seattle to Honolulu? Couldn’t she have gone LAX to Honolulu? I can’t beleive what the airlines make us do sometimes - it’s so complicated.

And that other kid in the thread too - Boston to EWR (is that Newark?) to CLT (I’m guessing Cleveland?) to LAX. I know there have to be direct flights between Boston and LAX - but they probably cost a fortune and were booked months in advance. It’s crazy. I hope he doesn’t get stuck somewhere.

Both son and SO flying now, just delayed. I’ll be up past my bedtime to meet them. (!)

CLT is Charlotte. The mom goofed and he is not stopping in Newark! Hopefully his travel will be uneventful.

I hear you, though. When I go to Cleveland, there are direct flights. But I prefer the reasonable cost of southwest…so I go BDL to BWI to CLE. Takes a little longer…but heck, it’s only time!

Good - I was worried he’d be stuck somewhere and I don’t even know the kid! One of my kids got stuck before - it was so stressful.

Not “travel” per se…but my dad is having a medical procedure tomorrow morning in Cleveland, and my sisters and dad are driving from the eastern suburbs to downtown at about dawn. I hope the roads are OK for their drive.

Okay, sounds like my son made it into NYC from Pennsylvania alright. That’s a relief! So all we have to do is make our flight into JFK tomorrow evening, and we’re set. Hopefully not for crummy weather all week!

Yes, we would have preferred LAX to HNL, but because D just finally decided yesterday, that routing only used 35,000 miles. The direct LAX to HNL so late would have used another 20,000 miles. In some ways, it is ok with me that she be a bit inconvenienced for being so late at figuring out her plans. I keep hoping she will change and become a better planner but only time will tell. To her credit, she was very cheerful that we are able to get her home for Thanksgiving to be with us, S and extended family and as fine with the odd routing.

Wx should be good in SoCal and Seattle, so she shouldn’t have to worry about anything in that respect, fortunately.

I had to travel back to my university today since I’m on duty Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night and I’ve been home since Friday (we get a full week off of classes). I could have traveled tomorrow but it’s going to rain a lot.

My first bus to the train station was 15 minutes late. The train to New Haven was 5 minutes late. The Greyhound was an hour and 30 minutes late! I missed my connection by 20 minutes and had to wait at Hartford for another hour to get on my last bus to my school. Once here, I waited another half an hour for the school bus to take my to my apartment complex (it started to rain). If I had a car, it would have taken me 2 hrs but it took me about 8 hours because of all the delays. (supposed to have taken me about 5)

At least I’m finally here! Good luck to everyone traveling tomorrow!

PhotoOp and Thumper1…DS is in the air, from Charlotte with only a 40 min delay. Happy, happy mom right now :). I worry for all those kids on the roads and dashing to catch planes and trains too!! We can all breathe a little easier on Sunday night…until the Christmas travel fun begins!

It’s funny how we end up taking these crazy routes to save a few bucks. I drew the line a few years back when the cheapest fare to Maui from LA was LAX-PHX-SFO-HNL-OGG. Nope. Not gonna turn a 6 hr flight into an 18 hr trip…even to save 150.00 per person. It was ridiculous!!

I worked with someone in the NYC area that flew EWR-DFW-London. Her dad got her ff tickets on American and the only free tix to london was through DFW, not JFK.

lots of friends on FB posting their kids flights from Midwest into EWR already cancelled for tomorrow. However, they note that united is trying it s best to get them home.

shellz, my dad once got a plane ticket from his brother from Hartford to Burbank or LAX with MANY connections. JFK or LGA would have been MUCH easier since we live in Stamford CT but my uncle saw CT and thought that it would be closer. The whole thing lasted about 16 hours and he wasn’t given any meals. He was NOT happy to say the least. It’s a common joke among our family now and we all have a good laugh about it. ;)

I hope everyone gets home safely and on time.

I try very hard to only do non-stop flight for myself and my family. So many things could go wrong when there is a stop over.

D2 got home last night ahead of the storm. We just need to drive out to NJ tomorrow to be with my mom.

When someone else is paying, I guess one grins and bears it! But the older i get, the less willing i am to play the fly around the country game to get the cheapo fares. gettin’ cranky in my advanced years. (that said we have a 7 hr layover near Christmas, because the direct flights were the equivalent of highway robbery!) Because son needs to be back at school (service academy) by a particular time, we often have had to pay big bucks for a direct flight. I guess it all works out, but I sure do miss the 99.00 r/t LGB to Boston!!

We are driving from east central PA to the Adirondack mountains on Thursday as soon as we get out of church services. Forecast is for a high of 12 on Thursday, and up to 15 inches of snow between now and then. Husband was whining that because I have to preach we had to wait until then… I don’t think he would have wanted to be driving tomorrow anyway at this point, so now I’m good. My parents are on their way from Rochester to Boston right now on a greyhound bus… glad I’m not with them!
