The Best 100 TV Shows Of The 21st Century

Yes, as I noted.

Sorry you posted as I typed. It happens.

There are maybe 8 or 10 shows from this list that I liked and watched all the way through. The Good Place, Stranger Things, Ted Lasso, Game of Thrones, Community, Schitt’s Creek, and I don’t remember what else.

I did enjoy Community, Modern Family, Downton Abbey, Gilmore Girls…but fell off somewhere before finishing.

I’m not a big TV watcher (I prefer to read or listen to audio books), but my husband watches everything – so I’ve seen a couple episodes of maybe 75% of this list.

It is a travesty that they didn’t list Firefly. Justice for the browncoats, man. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I have seen at least one season of 36 of these- and bits of some more. It’s an interesting list- I would have had The Wire at number one and imo Gilmore Girls is way too low- just based on the staying power it has had and how many people are still watching and (rewatching)- and leaving Mrs. Maisel off is a little strange too. A glaring omission to me is The Walking Dead- later seasons were not as good but the first season is terrific and it has so many spin-offs, I just feel it belongs on the list.

It’s unclear exactly the methodology. Are they asking actors and other influential persons in television to list the 10 “best” TV series, then counting the number of votes?

The results emphasize a particular type of television show. For example, Firefly is frequently praised as one of the best science fiction television series of all time, yet does not appear on the list. I only saw 1 animated show within the top 100 – no Rick & Morty. No Mr. Robot? Or Silicon Valley? These types of missing shows are all what I’d consider top 100 “best”, but the genre may have a less broad appeal. This would fit with the methodology described above. To get the most votes, the show would need to have broad appeal as much if not more than be “best” in quality.

I’ve seen (watched full series) 10 of the top 25. I agree with Breaking Bad and The Wire being on top. I do not agree with some of the others, such as The Office being #11. It’s an iconic television show that popularlized the mocumentary genre, with some good episodes, but not the 11th best show of the 21st century.

Modern Family was crazily low - but honestly I’ve seen few of the shows and I love Criminal Minds, Cold Case and especially Without a Trace.

I personally don’t think Ted Lasso is that good. It’s fine - but nothing great.

Was Abbott Elementary on the list? My wife enjoys that one.

No.

I loved 30 Rock and think Tina Fey is one of the best comedy writers and actresses in the business. Glad to see this show in the top 10!

I was really happy to see Friday Night Lights rank high, #14. A show I think, for any human to watch and walk away satisfied. If anyone is looking for a multiple season, family drama that hits SO many right notes of life in “America”, put this on your winter watch list.

I did watch a season or two, I’ll go back.

My husband was just explaining rural juror to his sister, I miss that show!

I’ve watched 6 of the shows on this list. Apparently, I am not a connoisseur of television shows.

Your taste may just be different than the entertainment industry - plenty out there to watch!

Glad that Planet Earth is on the list. We bought it on DVD back then! There are some other awesome documentaries out there flying under the radar.

The best TV show ever of 20th or 21st century IMO is ER!

I’m on season 10, trying to stretch it out, but sometimes I’ll put it on if H goes to bed and suddenly it’s after midnight… I’m so glad I still have seasons left!

But this list is shows that started in the 21st.

Selection criteria:

To identify the best work of that period (as we did with books and movies), we polled hundreds of stars, showrunners, craftspeople, executives and other industry experts and asked them to vote for the 10 best series that have premiered since Jan. 1, 2000. (So don’t expect to see “The Sopranos,” which debuted in 1999.)

Nor ER.

I’m aware. That’s why I said 20th and 21st. Please see my post.

I’m shocked that I Love Lucy isn’t on this list.

It’s funny, 30 Rock premiered the same season as Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. The latter had Matthew Perry and was an hour-long show, but a remarkably similar premise. We chose to watch that one, but alas it was canceled after one season.

I regret not watching 30 Rock – it’s on my list to go back and watch the whole thing!

That and Battlestar Galactica, lol. We watched the two-hour intro to it and loved it, but then got busy and never committed to the show.
