The Best 100 TV Shows Of The 21st Century

I watch very little TV though I’m trying to get back into it, but I agree it’s surprising The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel doesn’t belong somewhere on this list.

True - it’s one of our favorites. And it may be the only show we rewatched, while awaiting release of the last season.

I loved FNL when my husband and I watched it through the first time. (I think I forgot to list it in my post.) The chemistry between Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton was gold. And listening to Taylor Kitsch say “coach” in his Canadian accent that was trying to sound West Texas would just make my whole night.

My husband has since watched it through maybe another time or two, and he started watching it again this summer with our 19-year-old son.

Loved FNL, agree it has great characters. I’ve seen 11 of the shows completely through and parts of 4. Not a big TV watcher/streamer ( same thing in my book). Most of these series I’ve watched in the last 5 years. One of my faves was Gilmore Girls # 99.

FNL was one of the first TV series that we streamed. We both liked it a lot. Some things seemed quite far fetched as the seasons progressed, but we liked it. Our favorite thing to do was to watch the cliff-hanger last episode… followed by episode 1 of the next season.

I didn’t think I watched that much TV, but it turns out I’ve seen all of 21 of them, and parts (sometimes just one episode) of 16. Some of them I’ve watched on my own, and some as part of DH’s nightly “let’s watch an hour of TV” ritual.

I often say if it was a show or movie between 1988-2003 or so I probably never watched it as those were the years my kids were young and it was all I could do to find the time to read the newspaper we had delivered then. My “mom” marker was no going to bed until the newspaper was read - let alone watching tv!

Friends premiered the year I was a senior in college, and my roommate and I watched it every Thursday night religiously. And then over the next decade of its run, I graduated, moved to a new city, got married, moved to another new city, built a house, had a baby.

My oldest was 3 months old when the Friends series finale aired, and our neighbors invited us to a watch party in their newly renovated basement theater. But I was such a mess with managing my 3-month-old (and she was even a good sleeper, so I don’t know what my problem was, LOL) that I didn’t go.

I still regret it! And I’ve told my now 22-year-old daughter this story many times. She says, “That’s so lame, mother – why didn’t you just take me with you?”

I had my 5 between 1996 - 2003, I am now catching up! I live in northeast NJ and watch the sopranos last year, it was like a dirty secret. The shows I watched were not series, so I could miss a lot of episodes and it was still enjoyable.

I remember posting when we first started watching FNL during Covid:

I was happy to see she wised up later in the show. Taylor Kitsch kept me watching til the end. Just sayin’

I’ve never watched the Sopranos or Breaking Bad and people act like it’s not possible. Everyone has.

My wife watched Breaking Bad and said it was overly violent.

All I know is that the Dentist, Tim Whatley from Seinfeld, is the star.

Maybe when I retire I’ll watch them.

The Sopranos is not just a violent mafia series (although of course it is that). It’s also a portrait of social classes in suburban America, and a really great family drama.

My husband watches almost no fictional tv in this century - almost entirely sports and news, and the occasional documentary or movie. I did get him to watch The Americans with me several years back on streaming for two seasons but eventually just went ahead and finished it on my own because he had other priorities. We did watch The Bear together, but mainly that was because it was set in Chicago. Neither of us has been interested in the latest season. And he watched Ted Lasso with me, but we don’t currently have Apple+ so not the new season. It’s always frustrating to watch with him because I want to binge and he will at most watch two episodes at a time.

He also does not read fiction. I breathe fiction.

Agree with the top three–especially Breaking Bad.

Hard to accept that Modern Family was not listed among the top 10 or top 20, but, in Hollywood circles, that may be a byproduct of jealousy as many in the industry openly claimed that Modern Family won too many awards over too many seasons.

RuPaul’s Drag Race. Really ? I dislike car racing. Speaking of cars, hard to believe that RuPaul’s Drag Race finished ahead of the non-listed My Mother The Car, but that was from the 20th century (clearly ahead of it’s time).

Seal Team ???

I haven’t seen seasons of many of the shows. I didn’t watch much TV until just the last year or so. I just finished Homeland for the first time (H and I both really liked it), and I finished Breaking Bad for the first time earlier this year.

I am retired :). As I posted above, I’d not seen breaking bad until just this year, and I have never seen the Sopranos.

I’ll be following your path

I loved Modern Family and I suspect for many of us, it was the family show for our growing children - something we all probably watched whether you had a 5 year old or a 15 year old.

A good solid comedy. It did run many years. But did it break many walls or otherwise be notable in terms of standing out - besides good comedy and longevity? Dunno.

Well, they had a gay couple, a Trump like couple, and immigrants.

So maybe…?

When i couldn’t fall back asleep the other night i started thinking about this list and what shows I’m surprised aren’t on it. So far I have This Is Us and Derry Girls.
