Ahh, yes This Is Us. That was a banger. Derry Girls too.
Me neither! Not a fan of violence. And a chemistry teacher doing horrible stuff? As a chemist, can’t get on board with that. ![]()
It depends what criteria you are using to rate shows. While it’s true that Modern Family has won a historic amount of Emmys, by many other metrics it does not belong higher than its listed place. For example, a comparison of aggregate ratings on review sites between #77 Modern Family and #78 Always Sunny is below.
- IMDB Overall – Modern Family = 8.5, Always Sunny = 8.8
- IMDB Median Episode Rating – Modern Family = 7.8, Always Sunny = 8.4
- Rotten Tomato Critics – Modern Family = 85%, Always Sunny = 94%
- Rotten Tomato Audience – Modern Family = 89%, Always Sunny = 90%
This gets back to how persons voting on top 100 shows of 21st century are choosing their top 10. Is it more based on things like quality of storytelling, acting, directing, cinematography … Or is it more based on things like emotional impact and how much they liked watching the show?
I’ve watched both shows, and like the majority of IMDB / Rotten Tomato reviewers above, I preferred Always Sunny. I found Modern Family to be more of a generic, warm and wholesome sitcom. It has some funny moments, but it’s not a favorite show or a show I’d have any interest in rewatching. In contrast, Always Sunny was something I haven’t seen before. It’s much darker and more chaotic, with more risks, but I also find it funnier and more entertaining to watch. I have rewatched the early seasons and enjoyed doing so.
Like every ranking we have - i.e. colleges, etc. It’s all about the criteria used. There is no “best” show. Each person has their own best.
For me, it was Kyle Chandler![]()
Ugh, I do not like It’s Always Sunny. I will watch it if someone in my family wants to put it on because I like watching TV with my fam, but I would never ever watch it otherwise. It’s not very funny to me.
Ditto for Friday Night Lights. Not for me. I am from the South and so shows set in the South (and Texas counts in this instance) are always a little hard to watch because Hollywood usually gets so many things wrong and then it’s cringy. I also don’t love football. And football seems more integral to the show than soccer is to Ted Lasso. I don’t love soccer either, but do love Ted Lasso.
I did watch a bit of Atlanta, though, and that rings true. Never did watch the whole thing, though.
I agree that Derry Girls is glaringly missing. That would probably be in my top ten. It is a perfect show. To me a perfect show is one I would change nothing about and that’s Derry Girls for me – just perfection.
If you want to see Kyle Chandler and have HBO Max, take a look at Lanterns. It’s about the Green Lantern - I don’t have any particular interest in the DC Universe per se, and don’t know the intricacies of the Green Lantern story, but he does a great job. There are even scenes in a football field.
I watched Breaking Bad and liked it. I thought it was well done. My husband was a pharmacist at the time (now retired). He could not stand the lead actor abusing his chemistry knowledge that badly and refused to watch it. He did not mind the violence but ethically and morally, he could not stomach it.
We both love Derry Girls. I think it should be in the top ten.
I really enjoyed watching It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. Great comedy.
Modern Family had great acting & writing.
But, but, but, the football scenes are in Nebraska. ![]()
And actually, the show’s core genre is more murder mystery than superhero. The fact that Kyle Chandler is a Green Lantern is almost ancillary.
I guess I should include in the binge watch thread.
Never heard of it. There’s so many shows like that. My wife watched one about a Korean family - I can’t even think of the name. She thought it was great.
There’s more shows than ever it seems.
As opposed to your wife two?
Working on her. I’m an acquired taste. So #2 isn’t here yet.
Yes I switched words and didn’t delete one - pardon the pun.
Derry Girls is a cut above. My husband said, to him, the first episode of the first season is the funniest first episode of a TV show in many years.
The show had only 3 seasons so it did not drag on and on like many popular s. The finale was also uplifting.
It is one of a few shows that whenever we come across it, we stop and watch and laugh every time. The language, esp. from Michelle, is for mature audience.
Derry Girls was one of our absolute favorites! I can’t even count how many times that show made me LOL.
People I know love Derry Girls. I tried to watch an episode on a plane once and couldn’t make heads or tails of it. I think I need to try again in a quieter room and possibly with subtitles.
Kim’s Convenience?
Another great show!
Working Moms too!
Definitely recommend subtitle. Those characters spoke so fast. To get what they said in full, we need a subtitle.
Subtitles are an absolute must with Derry Girls! We actually use them for everything now, have for years–H is partially deaf so they were lifechanging for him, and also for me because I routinely filled in dialog for him when we were younger, so I don’t have that job now.
But anyway–Agree with most here that Derry Girls is a top ten show, absolutely perfect and one of the funniest shows I’ve ever watched.
