The Cal Bar

This is a response to sarahdolly’s question about arriving late to the summer sessions:

This is a little late, but…

Missing the first three days of class will definitely slow you down, especially since the summer sessions classes move fast. With some hard work you can catch up, just make sure you can get your syllabus and books (the student bookstore might be sold out, so consider getting them before you come for the summer). Also, if the classes you’re taking have discussions, I would try to avoid skipping them, b/c a lot of professors have a limit on how many you can miss. And if it’s a lab class…then three days will probably be too much, you could even lose your spot, since competition to get into the science labs is tough all year round.

For you, the other problem will be checking in–are you living on campus? If you are and miss the check-in to your assigned unit, be sure and look up the housing policy and your RA, since keys are given out on the first day.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I was wondering about Greek Life. How difficult is it to get a bid for a sorority? What are the odds/chances? What type of things should you do to really try to get a bid?

Hello-

I was wondering where the laundry facilities are located in the Unit 1/Unit 2 dorm buildings…is there one on each floor or a main one that all of the students go to?

In the halls, one room on floors 2, 6, and 8.

I believe all the breadth courses must be taken ON Berkeley Campus. I think I read that statement somewhere, I am going to say on the AP page.

@CollegeGirl17
All girls will receive a bid if they rush. The problem is that many girls don’t receive bids from the sororities they want.
There is no set thing to do! Just act like yourself and go to the rush events! I’m sure you’ll find a good house to take you in!

Tip: Dress nicely!

Do Freshman/Berkeley Seminars have Finals? I only ask because for the three I’m considering it says “TBA” under the Final Exam Group option…

about the humanities and social sciences requirement for CoE. how do AP and IB tests apply to them? The information sheet mentions that only the first half of the R&C requirement can be satisfied. what does that imply exactly? does that mean if we had to take two classes originally, now we’ll only have to take one?

The R&C requirement is two classes, an A and a B course. If you can satisfy the first half, that means you don’t have to take an R5A or R1A course, only a B class. I don’t know the exact CoE rules, but for L&S the waiver depends upon the AP test you took and your score. With a 5 on English Lit and Comp, L&S students can waive both R&Cs. With a 4 on either English AP or with a 5 on the English Lang and Comp, only the A class is waived. There are some oddball classes that don’t have a name like RxA or RxB that still qualify - for example Western Civ LS R44, English R50 or History R1

If you are looking to rush a fraternity or a sorority, you should check out Calgreeks.com for very detailed information, FAQs, etc.

Seminars typically don’t have finals if they’re one/two unit pass/no pass seminars. Otherwise, you need to check with the instructor.

Does anyone know if the professors are still around on campus during the summer?

I am taking Math 16A next fall and was thinking about also taking Math 98. Does anyone know if Math 98 is beneficial? How hard is it to get the class? I didn’t sign up for the corresponding lecture during my Phase I so how hard will it be to switch in Phase II?

Math 98 isn’t offered next semester.

But my CalSO counselor said I could sign up for it.

Hard to argue with the fact that it is not available and thus can’t be chosen as a course for Fall 2009. I have to assume that the counselor meant that it was a class that was fine for you to take, without having checked to see if that will have to wait until Spring semester.

Ok. Are there any 1 unit classes that I can take besides seminars? I’m already signed up for one but I’ll be short 1 unit.

You can also take a decal: DeCal

Thanks.

Another question: is it ok to wear red?

NEVERRRR!

I wear a red and white striped shirt on occasion. You never wear it to any games though. :P

I know not on game days or the week against Stanford, but will people yell at me if I wear a red shirt? What if I pair it with a blue sweater and jeans?
