The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

@GratefulDad1968 I think my D is starting to get an idea of the withdrawal my wife and I will be facing - especially because she’s the youngest. Love hearing her sing around the house - her older brother used to complain, but I’d tell him to back off because she was technically doing homework!

I’m a huge Maryland sports fan (thus the “terp” in my name) and have had season tickets and make the occasional road trip to see the football and basketball team. She was shocked last night when I bailed on the hoops game to come see her show - had tickets to tonight’s performance but they cancelled because of the coming snow storm here. I told her there was no way I was missing her show.

For those looking to meet during Unifieds, I doubt I’ll have a name tag, but I should be easy to find. My winter coat has a Maryland logo on it and I’ll be the guy with a thick scruffy beard that is mostly white on the chin.

FYI - my D got an email yesterday afternoon via Acceptd from The Hartt School. They made an error in charging a $30 application fee when it was supposed to be $70, and to please pay the $40 balance to complete the application.

@love2share - my D got the same email. We messaged back and are waiting for a response. Of course if we have to pay, we will, but definitely frustrating.

@afterp89 I am a sports fan and never figured it out lol… thought it was AFTER +p89  good luck to all of you at unified, please share your knowledge with those of us planning for next year

@love2share @afterp89 Same here. To show you how numb I am to this whole process, I paid the extra $40 without a second thought the instant he got the email. I used to be so stingy about everything. Now, I’m just, “what? you’re sending out another application? $50 plus $80? Ok. Here’s my credit card.”

And when one thinks about all of this money, all of the organization involved, and all of the travel, you realize just how many super talented kids are cut out of this process purely from not having the finances, organizational skills/support from parents, and/or flexibility of weekends. I am so grateful that I am lucky enough to be able to support my son in this endeavor.

People that have kids who auditioned for PPU- were there callbacks for your on campus audition? Was your child asked to sing extra songs or do more monologues ? Does anyone know how heavily the dance audition piece factors into the MT BFA audition?

@frisbee3 At PPU there weren’t any sort of official callback in the sense of they audition everyone and then have some come back. I heard some kids say that they were asked to sing again within their audition and/or given some direction. Didn’t hear anything about the monologues. No idea about how much dance factors into things. It certainly wasn’t addressed during the morning info session of the day.

@ZukAndSowash - did you audition today?

@frisbee3 my son was at PPU in December.

@KatMT - is there a way to update a resume on slideroom before the audition in NY Unifieds?

@frisbee3 I don’t think so. I think you will have to re-upload a new version

@frisbee3 only if I go in an unsubmit the application.

I will be sending an email today asking people to also bring a hard copy to the auditions, but it is okay if it is updated from the one submitted.

If an applicant wants to upload something else to slideroom pnce it is submitted they can email me and I can unsubmit for them so they can resubmit.

My D got the same email from Acceptd about Hartt. She emailed them and asked to clarify because the Hartt website says $30 for Acceptd and $35 for the school application (waived if you apply before November 15). Got back a total nothing response: “The full fee due for Hartt auditions is $70 (unless you auditioned on December 8), however, you have only paid $30. Please submit your additional payment through Acceptd before your live audition.” I’m inclined to have her ask someone at the school, this is death by duck bite.

Another, probably repeat question about walk ins at unifieds. If you sign up for a walk in, do you pay the audition fee on the spot? Then, do they tell everybody afterward to do a school application, or give some indication of whether it is worth doing based on how the audition went? Thinking of Penn State and Tx state in particular. Not wanting to go through the hassle and fees of an application if it is just a money grab if they don’t think a candidate is acceptable after the audition. Thoughts or experience?
Then again, the whole process is a money grab, what are a couple more ?

@CanaDad - based on last year’s Unifieds list, Penn State didn’t accept any walk-ins. I am kind of surprised TX State did. I wouldn’t count on either. From what I have heard, you do pay a fee on the spot and students are only encouraged to apply if the faculty is interested. It may all be a money grab in the big picture but the theatre departments don’t get the money so you don’t have to worry about them recklessly encouraging you to throw more $ at the process.

If they take a walk in, or if you audition at the Combine in NYC) Texas State will only encourage you to apply if they are interested. Certainly doesn’t mean they will definitely make an offer (could still not happen) but it does mean they would consider you in the final pool to get an offer.

Thanks, was looking at some posts in the thread “Master list of unified audition schools”, suggesting in Chicago either of those schools may possibly have walk ins.

Re: Muhlenberg @jbtcat @collegemom2000 @LIMTMom @CaMom13 @mindatwork @212121 I have some insider information on Muhlenberg. They have been accepting larger and larger classes in Theater. I know one very talented MT student who has dropped out of the Theater program altogether because she hadn’t been cast even in an ensemble role in first two years.

Thanks, @ZukAndSowash - my D is class of 2022, she’s a freshman not an applicant. Having read the CC board for the last 1.5 years I have heard multiple folks tell the same basic story about the state of things at Muhlenberg - too many actors and not enough opportunity for performing. I think maybe too many would-be BFA MT students used Muhlenberg as their BA “back up” and BA programs don’t usually have a cut off in how many students they’ll accept. I’m sure it’ll calm down over time. Muhlenberg Drama has generally had a good reputation and it’s a shame if it’s being cursed by its own success.

@ZukAndSowash my daughter is also Class of 2022 so not really sure how I am mentioned on this thread. She was accepted at Muhlenberg last year with a talent scholarship, but chose to go elsewhere for the same reason you are stating (not to mention that Allentown is simply blah.)
