The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

D applied to Hartt on the artistic application form page and not through acceptd and was not charged any fee at all. She has her confirmed audition time and everything. She noticed back in October when she applied that there was no fee if you didn’t use Acceptd and so far hasn’t been charged anything…

@mteverlasting Yes, I believe the Hartt supplemental fee is only if you used Acceptd. If you used the supplemental application on Hartt’s website, there is no fee. We didn’t know this until after we already submitted on Acceptd.

So, I’m looking for some guidance…Although we were prepared for the upcoming auditions, apparently S’s body wasn’t, and he is currently in hospital with pneumonia, with some surrounding fluid…Knowing he will not be in top form for upcoming auditions on Saturday, the thoughts that mull around in my head are…do we say anything to them at the auditions? If we do, are they going to think ‘oh, he’s a sick one, let’s not take him?’ (Even though he’s usually very healthy…)
Or does he just go into it doing his best and keeping his mouth shut. Which is what he would normally do if it was just a run of the mill sickness. Will they think wow, and he did this with pneumonia, etc.

@lithpool My son was sick at one of his fall auditions. We let the school know and they couldn’t have been more gracious and understanding. They were happy to make arrangements for him to complete the audition (the singing was the only thing he couldn’t really do well) at another time. With all of these kids going to all of these places in wintertime, sickness is bound to happen and the schools obviously know this. Whether they are willing to make alternate arrangements or not is probably school specific. But my gut says that people are generally good and helpful. So, you let them know ahead of time. To me, if they turn a cold shoulder that might be an indication that my son wouldn’t want to go there anyways! All of that said, I’m a newbie and I’m basing this on one experience with one school. Maybe someone with more experience will have different advice. At any rate, I sure do feel for you. All of this is enough pressure as it is when you don’t have any complications. My best wishes that things go well for you.

ugh @Lithpool I hope your son gets sprung from the hospital soon, that sounds awful and has been my worst nightmare for the last year… wish we could keep these kids in a bubble for the winter. Best of luck to him managing this upcoming weekend with pneumonia! Hugs!

@ZukAndSowash @El-Cee Thank you for the support! We are hoping he gets discharged by Wednesday, then one lesson for practice on Thursday, then unifieds on Saturday. Thankful we aren’t doing combines or Sunday unifieds.

Hoping his lungs will let him sing/breathe properly, and the extreme back pain (his main symptom) allows him to move for dance call. One school on Saturday auditions is high on his wish list for acceptances, so stressing a bit more about it. As we’ve said on this board…they all find their place…it’ll happen…
BUT, I am so grateful that he already has some choices/acceptances. It really does make going into auditions less stressful…

@lithpool, sending you healing thoughts for a speedy recovery.

We are in this cycle, but we heard from both the schools and parents that it’s a good idea to tell the schools. Some will have you audition and some will have you send additional materials.

BAL to both of you for a lot of healing this week!

@Lithpool, prayers for his speedy recovery! While ours (so far) is not illness, the dang weather is concerning! We just had a foot of snow in Illinois and they are calling for more next weekend–we are supposed to drive to Cincinnati for auditions :-/ Amtrak doesn’t appear to be an option (no routes found). Anyone run into that last year? Suggestions? I told my son we are not goin to DIE trying to get him to some of these auditions…may be a sign?? lol

Oh, and what should he wear?? For dance and the monologues/singing? Change in between? Or just wear one outfit.? I am much more nervous than he is! lol

@lithpool - especially since the Saturday school is his top choice, I would call to see if there is an alternative time he can audition later in the season. Be honest-tell them that it’s physically possible for him to audition, but because it’s his top choice, he’d rather postpone until a time when he is feeling better. See what they say. It certainly can’t hurt.

@pegski - look into driving there a day earlier if that avoids the weather. Last year there was a January blizzard that closed BU (and all of Boston) the day before one of their auditions. Many kids traveled to Boston an entire day early to avoid the unsafe travel (Massachusetts declared a state of emergency- so driving on the roads would have been illegal anyway). It adds to the expense (and missed school), but that’s a small price to pay compared to taking your life in your hands. Also- for folks flying, if bad weather is predicted- contact your airline. Most of them prefer to fly you there in advance (with no change fee!) to having you stranded and then having to work you into a later flight.

@lithpool - I agree 100% with MomofJ5…when my D was auditioning 5 years ago, she wound up in the ER on the day of her NYC audition for 3 California schools. They were very nice about it and said she could submit a video. If the school can’t or won’t accommodate you, don’t’ despair… I bet your S will rise to the occasion; he’s a pro!

@lithpool - I agree with above. Call the school and see if you can reschedule the audition. That is what we should have done when my D had bronchitis for one of her auditions during her cycle. We didn’t reschedule because it involved air travel and honestly the school didn’t care that she was ill. They have too many applicants to say, hey she was sick, wonder how she is healthy. She didn’t have a great audition with no voice, (obviously) and was cut immediately. It would be in his best interest to reschedule (or attempt to) for when he is in better voice. Hope he heals quickly! My D just got over a bout of pneumonia- nasty stuff.

@lithpool - you have gotten good advice so I will just send sympathy and support. I hope the pneumonia resolves quickly and/or he can reschedule.

Hi everyone.

Anyone have info on the BA MT programs at either Bowling Green and/or Heidelberg University in Ohio? They both look interesting, but we are not local so wanted to see if anyone has firsthand knowledge of them…

Thanks

@pegski My son auditioned at CCM last year. My memory was that they told them what was first. I believe my son danced first, he went in his dance clothes (black jazz pants with black jazz shoes and form fitting tshirt the color of the dress shirt he wore for the singing/monologue part of the audition). He had time to change in between. We fortunately stayed at the hotel which is walking distance to the conservatory because he auditioned in a snow storm last year. We flew to Cincinnati Thursday before the Saturday audition and ubered from the airport. Everything we needed was within walking distance. Great audition day, my son loved CCM. He ultimately chose another program but fell in love with CCM too.

@lithpool Best wishes for your son’s recovery, that is rotten luck. Any school that cares about its students, current or prospective, should be accommodating. As he has a few days to recover, it might be worth just calling or notifying the school about his situation, and telling them he hopes to make the audition (unless they offer a convenient time/place to reschedule). That way, if he is feeling well enough to audition, he hasn’t lost any ground; hopefully it might flag his file with a little note, so the auditioners know in advance that he is recovering from a serious illness, but that he is motivated to push through it…….

Are you talking about Unifieds or a campus audition? If its an on-campus audition you might want to see if there is a possibility to reschedule. My daughter had pneumonia a few years ago and it took several weeks for her cough and breathing to improve enough to sing. For her the breathing deep would bring on the cough. Everyone is different and maybe his adrenaline will kick in to help get him through but pneumonia was harder to recover from than a regular infection so it might be good to at least check out his options just in case. Also check with the doctor to see if there is anything he can take on audition day to help with breathing/singing/dancing. If its Unifieds then go for it but mentioning his condition wouldn’t hurt if he is having trouble singing. Maybe they will allow him to send in a video if he can’t get through his song. Best of luck!!

I would contact school immediately and try to move it to another Unifieds if you can go. He’s sick now, but may get worse or lose his voice by Saturday. Its early enough in audition season and if he is already scheduled they should be able to offer an alternative date. This is not an uncommon situation.

@pegski just noticed your comment. My D is applying for MT this year and we are just outside Chicago, so maybe looking for some of the same locations. Her midwest schools: Baldwin Wallace, Otterbein, Wright State, Ball State, Illinois Wesleyan, Millikin, Roosevelt (CCPA), Webster, UW Milwaukee (Peck School), Western Michigan, and Viterbo. (She’s also auditioning for Point Park, U of Hartford (Hartt) and Oklahoma City U (Bass).) I know it’s late in the season, but see if he can schedule auditions at any of those he hasn’t considered yet, either on-campus or at Unifieds. I agree with others who have said his prescreen schools are pretty selective! Other midwest ideas: Indiana (selective), UW Stevens Point (?), Kent State or Northern Ohio U (not selective).

There was an article in yesterday’s New York Times about UW Stevens Point…it is eliminating several liberal arts majors to try to keep costs down. Here’s the link: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/12/us/rural-colleges-money-students-leaving.html.
