The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

Anyone auditioning at Shenandoah this weekend? We skipped out on unifieds all together…don’t know if it was the right decision but my D was adamant that she didn’t want to do unifieds.

@mtnyc19 Their website says early March for notifications. They still have 3 rounds of on-campus auditions in February.

@mtnyc19 My D received the “No” email today from Shenandoah . They said they would send no’s/release approx 10 days after NY Unifieds.

@suledamo - now take some of the cash you saved and go buy coffee and baked goods at Goddess and The Baker. Yum.

Sorry @FROG65 - the rejections feel terrible. I hope your D is moving on and looking forward.

@suledamo we LOVE the Corner Bakery and Miller’s Pub right near the Palmer House! Just stayed there for Roosevelt auditions and the elevators weren’t a problem, but I’m sure it will be more crowded for Unifieds. :-/

@mtnyc19 With zero yeses and four nos, I feel for you. I appreciate your and others willingness to share both the yeses and the nos. Almost all of us have or will receive our share of nos and they can really sting. For me, it really helps to read that others are receiving nos and moving on with their chins up to the next audition.

CaMom13 She is definitely moving on & forward. There are other top schools that expressed interest by sending hold emails. Rejections are good and totally motivate her to be even more successful.

Anyone familiar with getting around Chicago? Is it easy to use mass transit like it is in NYC? Or will we need to use Uber?

Does anyone else feel like you are in some time freeze frame…like life can’t move on until you kid gets in a school…any school at this point? My child just started auditioning at NY Unifieds…just waiting to hear something…I heard other kids got offers and it’s radio silence for my kid…we have lots of auditions to go so fingers are crossed…I do feel for all of the kids and parents going through this process…its brutal! I will feel better when we get just 1 yes…or its a gap year I suppose if all the auditions are no’s. Please know that while I don’t post much, I celebrate each yes with you and your kid and I hurt for each no…I am grateful for all of the support on this board. I admire the positive attitudes. Break Legs to all your kids!

@KAT67 You are correct. I don’t think any parent who has a kid going to college NOT in an auditioning major can understand the anxiety and work that goes into this process. I am obsessing waiting for emails, checking Portals three times a day, checking CC to see if anyone knows anything, and seeing the rejection on my S when the school he loved said NO. Yes’s will come for you hopefully, and you will have to make decisions if those Yes’s are right for your kid. A “Time Freeze” is the right term. Thankfully May 1st will be here soon enough for the freeze to be over (or at least decided upon). I can’t tell you how much the support on CC has helped get through this process. Thanks to all.

@WeRnutz It’s way easier than NYC I think! The L can be very cold this time of year, so we did Uber or a cab. The cabbies are nicer and Uber is abundant. (Plan on about $10 a ride) Most of the cabs use the CURB app so you don’t have to have cash to pay, which is nice. I hope you are lucky enough to get “Old Tucker”! He has been driving a cab n Chicago since 1962 and is an amazing guy!

I was describing the process to a friend last night. He said “it sounds like you’ve dedicated a whole year of your life to your D’s college search.” I just looked at him and said, yeah, that’s pretty much what we have to do.

@carriemc95 My D auditioned for Otterbein at NY Unifieds. They did pull a random song from her book (she had pared it down from what she usually has in it, but still had about 5 songs in there) and asked her to sing it. They also asked her questions about her resume. Hope this helps.

@suledamo we stayed in a non-executive room and it was lovely! Elevator wait time was not terrible, we just left ourselves with a little extra time, but it never was a problem. My D had 12 auditions while we were there and everything worked out just fine. There is a restaurant on the first floor…it was pricey, but good. There is also a Starbucks, which was nice every morning. Mostly, we ate at either the Subway across the street, Chipotle down the street or there is a Chic fit e close by. There are plenty of other restaurants, but we were limited in time.

@WeRnutz love the screen name! We used an Uber everywhere in Chicago…from the airport and getting to and from auditions. Was super easy and cheap! We always allowed a little extra time, but there were always multiple Uber drivers hanging out around the hotels so it was very quick!

@WeRnutz If you are flying into Chicago, one of the train lines runs straight from there to a stop about a block from the Palmer. (We stayed at the Hampton which is literally steps from that stop - just around the corner of the building) Once there, we didn’t really need to go anywhere other than one other hotel for the NYU audition and we ubered for that. It was all pretty easy. The worst part was that we left at rush hour on Wed. of that week and the train heading back toward the airport was very full.

@speezagmom
That’s very helpful info. Does the train run right from O’Hare? Are there stops or connections? My wife and daughter are staying at the Hampton, they were going to take a cab but the train sounds appealing. I can google it but would appreciate any info from your experience.

@KAT67 We are exhausted, and my daughter has only applied to 8 US schools, and hasn’t yet auditioned at any of them. I can’t imagine the process for those who have been auditioning since fall, and to many more schools.

She is now getting excited and nervous but looking forward to the whole experience. I think that they will try to get Hamilton tickets as a fun distraction sometime during the week.

Ok, @ZukAndSowash it’s stressful. But at this point in the process, almost every communicated result is a “no”. My estimate, for this point and across the board for all combined schools, is that for every one “yes” there’s 5 “no”s and 14 still-in-the-running’s that haven’t been communicated. That is, for all auditions so far, 5% yes, 25% no, and 70% (uncommunicated) still in the running. Hang in there!
