Re: showcase - I would be furious if after spending tens of thousands on my kid’s education, my kid was told that he or she didn’t pass the audition for showcase. Molloy/CAP21 does its showcase at the Manhattan Center, and everybody gets to perform. Last year, there were 19 kids, and it was one hour. They staged it so as one kid was walking off, the next one came on from the other side of the stage, so as not to waste time. If they can’t get it done in an hour because there’s too many kids, then do 2 showcases. Molloy/CAP21 actually did the showcase three times to accommodate the industry pros. That being said - do I think that having a showcase is a great thing? Yes, because it’s another chance to be seen - for many, their first chance. It’s kind of like a debutant ball, LOL. Do I think it directly results in a contract for most of the kids? No, I don’t. CAP21 was very up front with the class about not expecting much, and to consider it a dress rehearsal for what their post-grad life would be like. If your kid’s school doesn’t do showcase, or your kid doesn’t make the cut for showcase, don’t worry – everybody will be on the same audition lines, trust me!
@Mark80 I am with you on holding vigil by the mailbox! Have you or any of you on here started using the “USPS informed delivery” app? Google it! I signed up and now every morning at 8:30 I get an email with little photos of what is due to arrive in my mailbox later on in the day! It’s great for packages too! Check it out! It might come in handy if we have to catch the little envelopes before our sweet children do!
@NewMTDad I actually ended up not getting in anywhere my senior year and decided to take a gap year this year. I got two jobs, joined a program that prepares you for college auditions, took classes, and I am getting great results! I actually just got my first acceptance to UArts, a school I attended a walk-in audition for at NYC Unifieds. I highly recommend taking a gap year. It gives you room to breathe, but also allows you to truly focus on the things you really want. It’s not the end of the world if you don’t get in - and if you decide to audition again, it just shows how much you’ll fight for it! Best of luck to your daughter!
@getmeintoMT Good for you for your perseverance and grit, and congratulations!!
Love informed delivery! Sadly, there currently is a small envelope from my D’s top pick in there today. I’m not even telling her. It might be better if I didn’t get the heads-up! Maybe I’ll pick up some ice cream.
Respectfully disagreeing. A showcase can get you representation. Representations gets you appointments. No or less waiting in lines at ungodly hours.
@lojosmo - my D got representation offers after showcase. She talked to them, but decided not to sign with any of them. She gets plenty of audition appointments anyway. If she wants to go to an open call at 6:00 a.m., she does it, but it’s pretty rare.
@penny1234, I signed up for that back in November after auditions started! Great little tool!!
@collegeboundSam and @lithpool , the overall cost of Viterbo was lower, but we found that the overall merit offer was lower as well, bringing Viterbo right in line with most of the other private college offers we received. We withdrew before getting to the talent portion though, so that could make a difference depending on the pool of monies available there. Cost of travel was a big factor on withdrawing as well. DS wanted to be able to come home for Thanksgiving and perhaps long weekends.
Thanks for the information about informed delivery! I had no idea!
@NYart15 some acceptances come in small envelopes! Fingers crossed!
@jenniferm1973
Not this one unfortunately. They told us at the audition that acceptances come in big envelopes.
@NYKaren Not sure if I agree with you on that…still waiting for my NAZ $$$ acceptance package as we applied regular decision, but the Viterbo offer brings the tuition +room and board to mid 20’s before talent scholarship considerations (that’s like a SUNY tuition package). So I think they are pretty good. Pace tends to give a whole lot more money for good grades, but their tuition still puts room and board in mid 30’s after VERY generous academic awards.
I posted this on the wrong forum. Son got his first acceptance … University of Northern Colorado. I think I’m breathing now!
@boola boola Congrats!!
@collegeboundSam, that’s about what the NAZ offer was – comparable to SUNY Fred & Cortland. Depending on the school and the pool of talent money that the department has, the talent offers can be all over the place. NAZ had a bigger talent budget than Florida Southern, but FL gave more academic merit … so, from what I’ve seen, all the offers end up being around the same, give or take.
Yes, Pace is known for giving a lot of merit, but their tuition and R&B is higher to begin with, your out of pocket will be higher. That was how it was for us with Fairleigh Dickinson. Great merit and talent (the best of the 3), but overall tuition is sky high, so would be in the $30’s to attend.
Congratulations to your S @“boola boola” !!! It only takes one and you are THERE.
I hope there are many more to come.
Thank you SO much @CaMom13! I wish the same to everyone else here. So glad I found this board, even though it was at the 11th hour! I don’t feel alone anymore >:D<
For those of you trying to time the delivery of “no’s” to your kids. Note that some acceptances come in a small envelope as it’s just the notification of acceptance - the big envelope from admissions then follows. If you want to be sure, you might be able to get a preview if you find the right window or light to hold the envelope up to. (Shameful - really - but when you need to time the no around a show, it might be worth it. ) :))
@speezagmom I did that!! So many prescreen rejections followed by more rejections and WLs - I needed to time my information delivery correctly. I didn’t even tell her when her top school announced on Twitter they would be releasing decisions at 6 pm, just let her go off to rehearsal. I had access to her portals, so I checked, and when it was a yes, screenshot the portal page and texted it to her. When they had a break in rehearsal, she saw it and called me in tears, asking if it was real. Phew!
