The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

Congratulations @16or32bars! Wonderful news!

Does anyone know if BoCo sends no’s out for early action?

@pegski Strange. ISU has or had a BA in musical theatre. I know some that graduated from the program. https://finearts.illinoisstate.edu/musical-theatre/

@CaliMTdreams They don’t call it “March Madness” for nothing. The end of February-March is tough but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Hang in there.

@GloriaVaughn, agree! But if you look at their site now, it’s listed as a BA in “Theatre Acting”. I think they are trying to get back to that? I seem to recall seeing some MT focus or at least a minor in MT when we first started looking last year :-/ Only plus is plenty of room to double major or minor if that is important to the student.

Can anyone provide info on NYU’s Weekend on the Square? There is very little info on their website and I’m trying to decide if it’s worth the trip. Thanks!

@kittysmom12 - we visited NYU last year the week before Weekend on the Square because that’s when my D’s spring break was. We had just heard she was in the week before…and I’m not even sure we had her studio assignment yet, which is weird to think about, but we had reserved a tour etc. The visit was super worthwhile. We got a lot more information on the program, a Q&A session with the assistant dean, got a better NYU tour, had a chance to actually see inside the Tisch buildings and got a chance to tour dorms. We also had welcome presentations by NYU admissions which was pretty exciting - it’s a super interesting school overall. It was great for us because up until that time all we’d seen was the outside of the buildings at NYU. Weekend on the Square is like all that plus a big party atmosphere. I would have liked to have done WotS but what we got from our accepted student program was enough for us and I’m betting hotel rooms skyrocket for that weekend too. One thing about the cost of hotels in Greenwich Village - timing is everything. FYI - we never really got a lot of information on the studio before she started. The Q&A was really helpful but it was about studying Drama at Tisch, not about NSB.

@kittysmom12 Not sure if you saw this info on the NYU website, so here it is:

Weekend on the Square
April 13–14

Get ready for a two-day NYU Extravaganza! Start the weekend with a session that breaks down the academic experience at NYU then fill your day with activities of your choosing. You can tour campus, visit a residence hall, meet with faculty members, enjoy student performances, celebrate with other newly admitted students and get lots of NYU swag. This is our signature admitted student event and this year is going to be bigger than ever.

Day on the Square
April 5th, 19th, 22nd, & 26th

Spend the day at NYU! Start your morning with a welcome from the admissions team before spending the afternoon learning more about the school or college you were admitted to, touring campus, visiting the residence halls and meeting student leaders across campus.

Meet Us at the Square
March 1st & 15th; April 1st, 8th, 15th, & 29th

Get to know more about everyday life at NYU from the people who are living it. You’ll spend the afternoon exploring campus with our current students and admissions staff. Afterwards, get all your questions answered over a light lunch courtesy of NYU.

We did a “Day on the Square”, thanks @love2share! I forgot that was what it was called.

In 5 years of going back and forth to NYC - we have not really noticed price surges based around NYU activities - after all, there is ALWAYS something going on in NYC, and it’s never “cheap”. The area right around NYU has boutique and high end hotels (for splurging I like the W on union square). But if you are looking to save a little $$ (or have hotel points), there is a nice selection of “budget” brand hotels like Fairfield, Hampton, and holiday inn express up in area around broadway and the low 30s (Near Macy’s). Easy access to the subway, and a 10 min ride down to all campus activities

I’m a frequent traveler so I use all kinds of sites to get hotel prices and I love to stay in older and cool hotels when I can swing them. Over the summer we stayed at The Walker Hotel just N of Washington Square for about $200 a night. For Move In we stayed at The Standard 2 blocks from D’s dorm for about the same. Come Parent’s Weekend both of those hotels were over $500 a night… aaand we stayed at a Hilton near Penn Station. The prices in the Village definitely vary by week! If you stay mid-town then of course the prices aren’t affected by NYU’s schedule.

If you’re on a budget, this is a very affordable hotel in NYC: https://www.thepodhotel.com/pod-39

The tradeoff is that the rooms are tiny - if you’re going to be spending lots of time in the room, it’s not the right place. But if you just want a budget-friendly place to sleep and keep your stuff, and you’re going to be out and about most of the day, it’s a great deal.

Ah, hotels in NYC.

We love the hotelstonight app. It goes against the planner in me, but if you wait til the day of, there’s some great deals t be had. We’ve gotten large (for NYC) rooms for between $150-200/night in midtown. And they’re nice, boutique hotels, too

Priceline with their “hidden name” hotels is my fave but you need to time it juuust right - usually 10-14 days before. If you can stand to wait for the day of that sounds awesome @artandtechmom but I think I’d pass out from stress flying into NYC and not knowing where I was going to sleep!!

@pegski I wonder what happened that it died out since the ones that I knew would have graduated between 2014-2016. None of them were able to get acting jobs.

@CaMom13 , yes, it was a huge stress for me, but we gotgreat deals a few times…

BUT

I just looked and they updated the app since I last used it and now, it’s cheaper to book ahead. I’m not sure how it compares to Priceline, but I see quite a few hotels in March and April for under $200 in Midtown and the Financial District and an occasional one in Tribecca.

Anyway, hope this helps somebody. I can now breathe easy knowing I can plan ahead next time we plan on NYC.

Just checking in to say “hi.” I have twins (boy and girl) going through the process and my older daughter went through in 2014/2015 and will be graduating from Ball State this year with a BFA MT. So, we will be in New York as a family for her showcase while we are awaiting answers for the twins. It was hard when one of them passed a prescreen and the other didn’t - but, they are very supportive of each other and wouldn’t mind ending up at the same school. It has been a relatively smooth ride - we are all pretty grounded and they only selected schools that they would be willing to attend if that was their only acceptance. We did not do walk ins - not to reopen that debate - but if it wasn’t one of their top 15 schools, we just didn’t see the point. My son is done with auditions, my daughter has one more and now we wait. 30 total applications between the two of them and 25 auditions. Just keep reminding ourselves that they only need one offer each. Nice to re-engage with everyone - especially some of the oldsters!

Thank you to those who gave info on Weekend on the Square. Now, a stupid question. I’m usually not technology illiterate but how do you reply to or mention a specific poster in a comment. I lurked most of last year and have rarely commented so I haven’t figured it out…

@Divamamacita Holy Cow! Having one go through this process is almost as much as I can take. Three?!?! And two at once?!?! There’s got to be some sort of award we can pass out!

@kittysmom12 To reply to or mention a specific poster, simply type the symbol @ and then the name. For example, my name on CC is love2share, so you would type @ and then love2share.
