The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

@newtothis13- It sounds like your D should consider that redirect as a potential fallback option. If it’s really a small program that requires an audition, it could be a decent choice. Of course you’d have to ask about performance opportunities with the BFA program also on campus and access to the best training classes, etc. My S was redirected to USC’s BA program last year and he seriously considered it before choosing a BFA program at another school.

@NewToThis13 Performance opportunities are the same. All of their auditions are open auditions so anyone even a Chem major can audition. They cast whoever fits the part the best. Some classes are different between the BFA and the BA but there is a way to get into a BFA class. If they don’t feel that the student is up to that level or will not pass the class, they will not allow them in. They will not set them up for failure. My dd and her friend both signed up for an advanced English class. Neither were English majors. Dd was excepted into the class but her friend wasn’t. Dd did better than some of the English majors.

@CaMom13 @toowonderful @jbtcat Ok, first a little correction to my original post. It was my daughter who was accepted, not my son. She wasn’t ready to let the cat out of the bag but I wanted to encourage others who may be in similar situations. Thought if I switched up the details, anyone who knows us might not figure it out!! All the rest was true though!

Thank you for all your input so far. This is a crazy process and having parents willing to share is immensely helpful. One thing we have been wondering ~ D selected MT only when she applied. Does this mean she is definitely assigned to NSB? Also, any suggestions on dorms? She likes Rubin because of some of the amenities and she’s not afraid of the lack of a/c. We’re from Florida!!

@kittysmom12 - if she auditioned MT only she is in NSB  My D loved the union square dorms (she lived in Palladium freshman year and Carlyle soph/jr) but then, she had to get up to 29th for her studio so it split the difference. Weinstein is the closest to Tisch building, but it is rather run down. She had friends who loved Rubin and Brittney

@GloriaVaughn and @NewToThis13, what school are you referring to for the redirect? As far as being able to audition for shows (when not in the MT program), while that may be accurate, I think I’d want more information/informal stats on who actually gets cast. If the MT kids are known to the directors, the likelihood is better that they will get preference.

My d was ‘redirected’ to a number of schools she had no interest in attending (if she wasn’t going to be in the program). I’d recommend looking into course opportunities as well, if your child really wants to ‘study’ MT, not just be in shows. If the college is that competitive, and your child is okay with being in a different major (but still wants to perform), I’d look into other options (cheaper, less competitive pool of kids auditioning for shows). Does that make sense? My d was redirected to Wagner’s non-performance program, which affords them to audition for shows and take a good number of comparable courses, and reaudition for sophomore year (this is another big thing you need to look into, if they truly want to be in that program; some schools do not allow this). To me, that would have been her best fallback option (but she ended up in a BFA program in the end).

@kittysmom12 @toowonderful - my D was in Weinstein her freshman year (my non-MT D; she hates being called that!). They called it “Cell Block H” due to its shape. Agree re run-down, but she liked it because there were dining choices in the building…this is not the case for all NYU dorms. If it’s important to your child to have dining in the dorm, keep that in mind.

@EastchesterMom - that is definitely a positive. My D’s freshman dorm, Palladium, had a dining hall - which was super handy as her 1st year they had a “snowmageddon” incident that brought the city to a halt!

@toowonderful was that January 2016? That was the year we were at NYC Unifieds. I’ve never seen the city shut down like that! It was crazy and kinda magical. Made for an interesting Unifieds.

Did anyone have their kids do a walk in at Penn at LA unifieds? Did you hear back? At the info session they said they would let you know within 4 days one way or the other if you needed to apply to the school.

@kittysmom12 My D is in Brittany - amazing location (corner of 10th and Broadway) - very close to NSB classes and the dorm is beautiful. My D’s big requirement was rehearsal rooms in the dorm and she takes full advantage of them - she’s a night owl. But no food service in the dorm is a drawback and it’s a pretty quiet environment as compared with Weinstein, 3rd North or Rubin.

@lastbroadwaygirl yes, my son auditioned for Penn State (walk-in) in LA. No, he hasn’t heard anything back.

My daughter is a freshman and loves living in Brittany Hall. It is centrally located and has spacious rooms. She doesn’t mind not having a dining hall in the dorm since there are many close by.

NYU parents - recommended hotels for move-in? Looks like there are only a few close to freshman dorms. Yes, I’m already planning… :))

Hahahaha. My kinda gal. I stayed at The Standard and got an awesome price on priceline. It was GREAT and 3 blocks from Brittany but it’s too spendy without a discount.

@CaMom13 I just checked Priceline & Orbitz for Weekend on the Square dates and the prices are the same as the website - ugh!!! It’s pricey but may be worth it to be so close. We won’t have a car. I’m terrified to drive in the city, even though we live in a big city!

@kittysmom12 In NYC, you won’t need to drive. There’s plenty of options - walking, subway, taxi, uber.

@kittysmom12 We are 4 hours from NYC so we drive and take the ferry into the city. Bus shuttle service from ferry doesn’t go to NYU area so we stay at the Courtyard on 30th which is 2 blocks from Broadway. We often get rooms in advance for about 200. I think it’s about a 10 minute walk to Union Square, a bit further to Tisch but we like a good walk. We plan on sending everything to Bed Bath and Beyond for pickup there. Anyone ever done the NYU provided shuttle on move-in day? Wondering if it’s a nightmare?

Move in day was SO well-organized. We arrived with multiple bags but most people arrived in SUVs… and they still headed to BBB on the shuttle! NYU also had a massive party at BBB that night with games and prizes. My D’s roommates used their prizes to defray the cost of a refrigerator… which they hauled back on the shuttle!

I am the same @kittysmom12 - I take the train in from EWR, the subway or Uber or walk around town. Driving in LA is not the same as driving in NYC and parking stress+$$$ is just not worth the pain when public transit is so easy.

Okay - for weekend on the square (sorry everyone else, we will stop NYC travel-advice soon) Freehand on Lexington at 24th is currently $200 a night on Priceline. It’s .25 mile from the N station at Madison Square Park - and Eataly for those who are as food-obsessed as I am - the N will take you to within 2 blocks of Tisch or it’s a nice walk for those who prefer hoofing it.

I have to admit we were spoiled because we live in the NYC suburbs- no hotels and related travel expenses! However, re moving in and out of NYU dorms: moving in is well-organized and easy freshman year; the rest not so much! I have fond memories of the cops chasing us away, throwing D’s stuff on the sidewalk and waiting for her dad to come around the block, fighting for a big rolling moving tote… I’m serious, it was fun! Just make sure you have at least two people helping!
