The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

So, how’s this for a distraction? The whole family is traveling to NYC to see my daughter’s senior showcase and cabaret. She is a senior MTO at BSU. Luckily, both twins received offers or this would have been an extremely awkward few days. It will be good to experience both the front end and back end of this process simultaneously. Even with twins this time, I will say the second time around has been easier bc we knew what to expect and I think we managed to control our expectations more this time around. Also, I had a better understanding of how completely random this process is. As they say, “this wasn’t our first rodeo.” Sending good energy out to everyone out there in CC land. Keep the faith. May 1st is just around the corner - we can make it until then!

Ok, we parents are not the only ones looking for inside info on social media. On my Instagram, I just got the notification:

Umichmusicaltheater started following psumt 33 min ago.

Haha.

U-Mich & Penn State both started releasing results recently, so they are probably trying to see who crossed over, so smart! Since kids can only accept at one  haha!

Sorry for my ignorance, but what does “crossed over” mean?

Never mind, it’s late. Brain off. I get it.

I have heard of calls being made for Penn State but not U-Mich. Do you know of people who have heard from Michigan already? Their last, on campus, audition date was March 22.

Oops! I meant February 22 (last U-Mich audition date)

Michigan usually notifies from early to mid-March, traditionally by phone call, which is the most memorable day ever. I remember my daughter was dancing in concert that day - so I had them call back so that she could get the phone call herself. It took every bone in my body not to text her! As far as Instagram goes…it’s all about posting what shows alumni have booked or supporting current student’s work. All major MT programs follow one another. They are definitely not posting about who is accepted or will be accepted to their programs. Best of luck to everyone. March is definitely the hardest month but April can be too, especially with waitlists. Hang in there and enjoy all those senior year activities - before you know it, your child will be off at school and you will be wishing you could do it all over again!

I think a few of you have been mulling over campus visits and if they should be on accepted student days. If you can only have one day, my recommendation would be to skip accepted student day and arrange for a personal tour/visit with the MT department where your student can sit in on classes. Accepted student days are pretty general in nature. Your student will be far more informed if they can actually sit in on a class or two in addition to getting the general tour.

I agree. I’m ignoring the accepted student day emails. We are trying to time our visits around spring shows.

It’s hard to generalize about Accepted Student Days, it really depends if there is something specific to the Drama/MT department or not. I agree that a large college’s general Accepted Student Day is not necessarily the way to go. If you can arrange something with your department, that would be way better. UNCSA however, does an Accepted Students Weekend, in which the student group goes through the full cycle of performance classes, Acting with two different instructors, Voice, Movement, Dance, Stage Combat, etc. The instructors speak and then take the students through a class, while parents observe. You really know exactly what you are getting. We saw Student Films, attended several interactive panels. We saw a show too. It was invaluable.

It seems that Rider also does that with one of their Accepted Students dates - the April ones. My daughter was planning to visit this week b/c she is on break from school and they tried to discourage her by enticing her with the full day of faculty masterclasses that will be available if she holds out till April and does their dept.-specific Accepted Student’s event. However, there is a show this weekend and she wanted to see the production, so we might wind up making two trips. Luckily we live in NY so this is not a big deal.

Sorry if this is lame question: is UNCSA on the University of North Carolina campus? Theres also a high school there?

Yes, Penn State is not posting about who they are accepting but they started following one of my son’s friends 1 hour after she got the acceptance phone call. They have also started following 7 other high school seniors in the last two days. Umich JUST started following PSU last night. Probably not coincidences.

@mamaboyz UNC is in Chapel Hill. UNCSA is in Winston Salem (closer to Wake Forest University) and I do believe there is a high school also affiliated with UNCSA.

UNCSA does indeed have a high school program . It is more of a conservatory program than a performing arts high school. There are musicians ,visual artists , ballet students, vocal performance students ; but the adrama students are there for only the 12 grade year. It is essentially free for NC high schoolers but they do take out of state students. There are about 22 students in the program.ot is by audition only. Those auditions are going on now. The 1 year drama program will give a student a real sense of what conservatory training would be like., particularly at UNCSA college. They kids don’t interact much with the college students, though they do some with the college faculty.

@Jpkcmo - wow, you can run but you can’t hide these days… another thing us old timers didn’t have to deal with! Lesson for the kiddos: watch what you post about yourself on social media!

Any more word about FSU calls?

@mtmom Michele posted on other thread that they were trying to call everyone last night. Alternates will receive letters and they go today. It was so hard to watch my daughter stare at her phone yesterday waiting for the call that never came. We are still hoping for our first yes.

@MTMom2019 ugh, same here. What is the thread she posted on?
