The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

My daughter just got the acceptance from Molloy/CAP21! This acceptance helps so much. Hoping all of you waiting get yours soon!

S is in at Molloy/CAP21!

D is in at Molloy/CAP21!

@katzenbogen Mine too! :slight_smile:

Congrats, @katzenbogen !

Congrats, @FlaMTmom !

@NoMTinMD YES concerning the cost issues. We are very much struggling with that. D is in to maybe 5 “affordable” MT programs which we can handle, but she’s also into a couple of “TOP 10s” that will put us in debt. How do we rationalize the cost- like six figures more over 4 years (and that’s with significant scholarship). We don’t qualify for need based, but have one in Med School at a totally justifiable high price and two more at home. Is a #11 program at $39,000/ year out of pocket really a good choice vs. #20-25 at $5000??

@4angels I wish we had the $5000 as an option or even the $20000/year

@NoMTinMD Have you looked at schools who waive out of state tuition for MTs? We discovered several of those along the way…,

@NoMTinMD Cost is one of the biggest issues. Unless your D/S gets into one of the schools that offer in state tuition for MT, this is going to be expensive. Most schools know this and try to offer a good amount (some are notorious for offering a lot and some for offering pennies). It is so hard to figure out ahead of time. And because you just don’t know where your child will be accepted, you have to roll with it and apply everywhere and try to figure it out later. I know it is late in the game for you, but you should have a conversation. “This is what our family can afford to contribute, this is the loan number, etc.” If you have choices, then some schools must be dropped. This is a risky career and being burdened with huge loan payments may mean that your child will not be able to audition after college because they are working all of the time to pay loans. 18 year olds can’t wrap their heads around this so the parent has to be tough. We all want the best for our kids and for them to be happy, but you can’t find money when it is just not there. In our case, the decision of where to attend was partly fit and partly money. School #2 offered a huge amount of $. In both places, most kids move off campus after freshman year. We were able to save a ton doing that, but the rent in the #1 school city would have been astronomical (would have cost more than dorm). So that is also something to think about. It was a really good decision and my D loves where she is.

Something else to keep in mind (sorry to be Debbie Downer): When my D was making choices, we called FA and asked for more money. The school came up with more, but forgot to tell us that it would only be for the first year. The next year’s bill came, and surprise! no grant, and they would not restore it. Also, in the 4 years my D has been in school, the tuition went up $5,000! This is super tough to research but I wish I had. I would have asked financial aid for a guarantee that her aid would climb with the tuition. They might have said no, but I would have been better able to make a decision.

Congrats on the Molloy/CAP21 acceptances! It really is a fantastic place. (Mom of freshman boy)

Anyone know how big the freshman class size is at Molloy?

Also, wait until you get the full FA package. If i remember correctly, my D’s talent letters offered a certain amount for talent, but then when we got the whole package there were additional grants (we don’t get income based FA).

@MThopeful99 - The Molloy/CAP21 class size is usually about 30-32 and they are divided into 2 cohorts for classes.

Question…if a school does academic acceptance and artistic acceptance at the same time (so we’ve heard nothing up to this point) and then we get an email telling the student that financial aid award letters are being prepared, would you take that as maybe your student should also be expecting a Yes or possible Waitlist for a program?

@calimtdreams was that Hartt? We got same letter.

@CaliMTdreams if you’re referring to Hartt… I’m wondering the same thing! Received an email from Hartt regarding “Financial Aid is on the way”. Did everyone who auditioned for Hartt receive this?

@MTmama42 Lol…yes. Of course I was like “What does this mean???”

@CaliMTdreams a financial aid offer before being officially admitted certainly seems promising!

@NoMTinMD and @4angels - this was us last year with D2. D1 got in a pretty affordable BFA MT program that she loved (she graduated in 2017), and we were able to negotiate for more scholarship money so it became affordable. D2 auditioned last year (Acting). She had to turn down a top-tier school because we couldn’t justify 6 figures of debt. We also qualified for nothing, and even though she got scholarship money, it wasn’t remotely enough, even after negotiating for more. She didn’t even audition for Carnegie Mellon or NYU because we knew they were notorious for not giving out much money. She didn’t love the other schools where she was accepted, and was on multiple waitlists. One of the WL schools she loved sent an email saying there would probably be no scholarship money left if she came off their WL, so she declined. She was planning a gap year when she got a phone call on May 1st offering her a spot in a program we could afford. It was gut-wrenching!!!
