@nykaren I’m sure it went to everyone who applied academically
@MThopeful99 , my DS is a freshman MT at Ithaca. He says the BFA acting and MTs do almost everything together. They have their acting classes together, voice and movement, etc. He said there are a ton of amazing singers who are acting and not MT; my DS is a dancer so a lot of the acting kids sing way better than he does! The kids often have no clue why X person got MT and Y person got acting, and they don’t care, they are all BFAs and are all friends.
The MTs get more dance (but I believe acting gets some too), and voice lessons included, but I think acting majors can take voice if they want on their own for a fee - and since IC has an amazing music school, the voice faculty is top-notch. Everyone can audition for shows, and the leads in musicals have been acting majors. I saw their fall musical and I had no clue who was acting and who was MT. They were all amazing.
He says the biggest thing he realized about Ithaca is how unified the department is. He feels it’s an acting program first, for everyone. Other programs he looked at were more separate. So if you got an acting offer from Ithaca, I’d seriously consider it. It’s very small, lots of professor attention, lots of support. And congratulations!
@NYart15 I know! Great financial package from them but not a peep from auditions. She auditioned in Chicago.
@MT2023d- I’m confused. Since you got into Tisch on ED-2, why would you say, " So far I have been accepted into NYU Tisch and Marymount for Musical Theatre." Once you get into a school ED, you are obligated to withdraw your applications to all other schools. What am I missing?
Regarding the financials, the entire system is designed to prevent families from making informed decisions going into the process. First- most schools don’t even set tuition for the year your kid will matriculate until after you apply. In what other area would you devote costs to buying something without knowing the price? Second, the schools all talk a great game in the info sessions about how great their financial aid is, blah, blah, blah. The Family hears “they will make it affordable for US.” - so they apply/audition/get hopes up. But many times the expected family contribution is way higher than what the family can afford, or the merit aid is way smaller then expected, etc. Yet you already invested so much into the school. Three - some schools actually delay the communication of the financial aid package. So you have a kid who is so excited a a parent with digestive issues until they hear. Seriously- in what other circumstance would a reasonable consumer put up with this? The system is designed to put you in a bind. Many people will luck out with their dream school - we were very fortunate that the best fit for my S of his narrowed down choices was the school with the lowest cost of attendance, but I’ve read tons of stories where it doesn’t work out that way. It’s really unfair.
@4angels Montclair gives in state tuition to all MT majors (don’t think it is tied to GPA). Ball State gives a lot of aid to out of staters for good grades so my d is paying almost the same as our instate in Ohio. I know there are other more affordable options but can’t remember right now.
Congratulations to everyone who got acceptances! Fingers crossed for those still waiting to hear!
@NYart15 @4angels Montclair also offers instate tuition for MT students, but the 3.5 GPA instate doesn’t stack on top of the MT. You only get the instate one time. Don’t know if other aid is coming or not.
Regarding the Hartt email, I think those that got it SHOULD be excited. Because we’ve gotten nothing. So, not everyone still in the running got it. Good luck to all.
HARTT - Are we sure people got acceptances? Based on our own past experience and those on this board, Hartt usually trends toward the last week of March. If people got offers of MT, can you let us know how they were notified? Maybe Hartt is changing things up this year.
@Divamamacita not sure if this will help because my D did the early December 7th audition at Hartt. She was notified of acceptance to MT on December 14th via email and a letter followed about 7-10 days later. The letter had scholarship information in it, but she also received the financial aid email this evening.
@Divamamacita Re: Hartt. My son received an email from a faculty member that essentially said good news is coming your way. Five days later (2/22) he received an email from the director of admissions saying you’re in. That email also said they were working on figuring out scholarship info for all the newly accepted students, and once that was done acceptance letters would go out. That in light of what boolaboola has posted sounds to me like these emails about financial aid may be a good omen. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you all.
Thank you to all who wrote such encouraging remarks after our deep sadness last night. S went to school today and did not say a word. I think he just has to digest it for a while before he can face the looks and comments from others. Many have mentioned how inappropriate it is for others to just presume that anyone would get into UM or any of these schools, but the reality is that even those that have experience in the field, don’t see how the world has changed in the last few years. So much talent, so much interest, and with a typical 1-3% chance in getting into any one of these programs, there just is an overall lack of understanding. Particularly hard when we have kids who have also worked so hard academically, taking honors, AP/IB classes and end up with stellar GPAs, and then don’t apply to schools that everyone else is looking at. To top it off they get excited about admission into schools that others would never have considered or simply have never heard of. This whole process is so hard…and yet…the resiliency is there. He is bouncing back, and once again, has some incredible options already with a number of schools still to hear from. It is hard as a parent to watch out kids go through this, and I am grateful for all of you, and the words of love and care that you shared over the last 24 hours. This too shall pass, and he will find his place where it is meant to be. Now…I better make an appointment to my hair stylist…because the grey seems to be coming in faster these days! HA! :))
Honestly not experiencing the ‘deep sadness’ part here and we’ve had our fair share of rejections. S seems to let it roll off his back. Probably a pretty good acquired skill for what lies ahead after college. Of course we want Yeses. There hasn’t been any dwelling on the Nos though. #Next
I want to encourage those still waiting on their first yeses to remember their passion, drive and talent and all those who have recognized those qualities in them. Whether the recognition came from relatives, friends, teachers, coaches or audience members, that recognition of what is special about you is truth that you need to hold on to. Don’t doubt or lose yourself in this, sometimes, brutal process. Comparison is truly the root of all evil. Everyone’s path is unique and you will have your story to tell one day and the rocky bits make the successful parts of the story even sweeter!
I was impressed by how brave and wonderful (talented goes without saying!) all of the young people I witnessed at Unifieds were. The walls were singing with “gorgeous”, “soaring”, “angelic”, “emotion-filled”, “vibrant” voices from all directions and everywhere you turned you were greeted by bright hopeful faces. I was grateful to be a witness in those halls and honestly proud and humbled by the amazing-ness of all of you.
So, remember every compliment and every victory along this journey to keep you going through the angst! Don’t you dare give up because I am saving up for my show tickets and expect wonderful things from you incredible MT majors. <3
@DadOfMTboy Glad your kid hasn’t experienced ‘deep sadness’ but I can say last year we had beyond that, more like sheer desperation, after a dozen rejections and no acceptances. Also devastation after 2 schools that she had dreamed of going to for years turned her down. Being a girl might have something to do with the extreme emotion, but the sadness of watching our daughter’s dream shatter in front of our eyes was difficult to live through.
@Divamamacita re Harrt the initial email was just asking if a FA email from Hartt MIGHT mean something since academic and artistic acceptances tie together. Not that acceptances had gone out, just maybe the potential of one.
My daughter was a “barely B” student through high school. So she didn’t have all the options of some of her friends. And I’ll tell you: those rejections cut her to the quick. It was so hard for her to see that they weren’t rejecting her as a person; they were rejecting her application. She felt that each one was an indictment of her as a person.
Her safeties were community colleges upstate with dorms, but that didn’t help-- she wanted a school “that wanted (her)”-- not one that accepted everyone. Plus she didn’t want to go through this all over again in 2 years and transfer.
Each rejection brought on a 24 hour pity party, with tears and some ice cream. But I’ve got to say, I’m proud of my daughter. She recovered each time.
When the first round of acceptances in December yielded schools she wasn’t crazy about-- 2 SUNYs that simply didn’t seem like her place, those CC’s, and one other she didn’t want, though I forget why. So in December/January, she sent out another round of apps… schools we carefully chose that were likely safeties. And this time she got acceptances.
Last February, we went up to see one that had accepted her-- a school she had never heard of until we went searching in December. And she’s there right now, as happy as could be.
She heard a LOT last year from us that she would “Bloom where she’s planted.” And she really internalized that; she’s planning a tattoo over spring break of a flower to remind her of that.
@MThopeful99 DD is a Sophomore MT at Ithaca can’t say enough about the amazing training she is getting. I have seen MT transfer into acting and acting transfer into MT at Ithaca. The MT and Acting programs do just about everything together you truly can’t tell them apart. This year my dancer /singer D is the lead in a straight play and just finished a movie deal. The acting training that she is getting is beyond fabulous so much so that she wants to pursue more acting . I have seen the most amazing singers come out of the acting department you can’t tell the difference between both departments. The MT kids and Acting kids do everything together including socializing and living together. I can not say enough about how strong the training is and the opportunities to grow in a really nurturing environment! Good luck congratulations on the amazing choices you have. I would suggest to you and everyone reading go to the student acceptance weekend. Sit in on the classes take a dance class schedule a voice class talk to the students then go where it feels right. One thing I would say about Ithaca is no one ever transfers out for a better program!
@KBreedlove and others…congrats on JMU. Can you please tell me how the notifications came through for that?
