The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

Anyone with a kid in Utah BFA actor training program? My kid was admitted and I want to learn more about it. They also ask for us to accept the offer by April first. That feels very early.

@NYC3mom we want to know more as well. Our letter says 4/15. I thought they had until 5/1.

Kevin Covert at Shenandoah posted this on Facebook yesterday evening (sorry if this has already been mentioned):

“I’ve been sitting at my computer going over audition notes and watching videos for 3 hours … and I still don’t know how to narrow this talent down … #BFAProblems #BroadwaySchool The TALENT is REAL”

@NYC3mom and @katzenbogen They cannot ask for your decision before May 1. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1615432-are-you-being-pressured-to-send-a-deposit-before-may-1.html

Regarding JMU notifications — EA academic admit program admission decisions are now up on the applicant’s admission portal (released Friday afternoon). RD academic applicant (including those who applied EA and were deferred to RD) program admission decisions will be available when academic admissions decisions are posted, historically mid-March.

We are on spring break this coming week, and I am traveling up to NY with the seniors for the NY Senior Showcase. Will be following up with MT program EA admits and WL this week. As mentioned above, RD academic applicants will receive program admissions notification when they receive their academic admissions notification. We will follow up with those admitted and waitlisted after the admissions decisions are posted.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.

My D was waitlisted at Utah from her walk-in. She really liked the school - should we try to tack on a visit that we are taking out west to show true interest? Does that usually help?

We have had 2 schools ask for answers prior to May 1st.

S got a yes BFA MT from U Utah! Yay!

@mauidad us too.can they do that?

@mauidad and @4angels - No. They cannot do that. You legally have till May 1st. You can kindly reach out to the schools and remind them. If you are not interested in the school, feel free to decline, but if you are and they are pressuring- let them know you are interested, but do not have all results and will let them know when you make a decision since you have till May 1st.

So my daughter has received 2 WL, one yes and 3 no’s. At this point she’s pretty discouraged thinking there won’t be any more yeses (still waiting on 3 more schools and one more audition) so she put in an application for the studio school of LA last night. Has anyone heard anything about their program? It’s a BFA in contemporary MT + film. Looks like a cool program but wondered if anyone knows anyone there or has experience with them? We learned about them at thes fest.

As I recall from when we went through this a couple years ago, some schools may ask you to make a decision earlier than May 1 so they either let candidates on the WL know that no spots remain or yes they got in. They cannot require it and cannot release an offered spot. You should not feel pressured. At the same time, realize there are others biting their nails on the Wait List uncertain whether or not a spot may open for them. As the top program acceptances get sent and filled, the dominoes begin to fall. And it looks like acceptances for many programs are coming out earlier this year. Certainly earlier than they did in Spring 2017.

@mommyMT regarding the Studio School…I have known of some kids very interested and even attending…but beware and do all of your homework regarding accreditation. A university/college program that does not have what is called “regional accreditation” means that the degree is not worth nearly as much in the end. It is something to look at for all institutions, but those that are a bit less than traditional need that extra look. I have been told that The Studio School is good for training…but I believe it is pretty pricey. Just “buyer beware” on this one…but it can be a good fit for some!

Does anyone have any information or experience with Otterbein’s waitlist? Did they go to it in years past, how many are on it, etc? My S is on it for BFA Acting. Thanks!

@HPDbfa During my D’s audition cycle she was on Otterbein’s waitlist. That year they didn’t go to the waitlist. It really varies by year, sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. If I remember correctly, their waitlist is usually not very large. I know that doesn’t help a ton- but it really does change with every year so hard to give a solid answer.

Does anyone know… are all calls for Pace out? and how do they let you know if it is a no?

@123jsy re: Pace, acceptances by phone, alternate/waitlist/rejection by snail mail after March 15th.

@UMiamiMTDad You are exactly right. The schools will put pressure to accept as early as possible so they can go to their waitlist. Its a battle out there and the schools want to fill their classes with as much talent as possible. The good news is once you have the offer, now the schools are selling themselves to you rather than the other way around. Having said that, it is only fair to those on the waitlist to release your spot as soon as you know you won’t accept the offer. This could be someone else’s dream school.

@mommyMT - 2 WL and 1 Yes is pretty good if she likes the schools! Is there a reason why she’d look elsewhere when she already has one acceptance and 2 waitlists? Waitlists do move - is her yes from a school she doesn’t like or is she just thinking she need more options?
