For those of you visiting LIU (and any other program), it is really best if you can go on a day when they are holding classes so your student can attend a couple of classes. At LIU, getting into an acting class is a good idea as they teach suzuki which is pretty unique and I think some love it and some just don’t find it to be for them. You’ll also get the “vibe” of the student interaction, etc.
@mtmom1967 They said there will be faculty there from the Theatre dept on Sunday, as well as the Dean of the College of Arts, Communication and Design, but the MT facilities aren’t a normal part of the general tour. They are trying to confirm if someone from faculty can take us after the academic session.
@MTmama42 - if Millikin is on your list let them know, but that you may not be able to decide by the end of 30 days. The scholarship offer cannot “expire” - you have until May 1 to decide. BUT, if you know Millikin is not the choice, then let them know as early as possible in order to make the money (and the slot) available to others.
@MTbackstagemom Congrats on the LIU Post acceptance!!
A word of caution for Wait Listers watching for commits to other programs. Most schools send out more acceptances than they expect to commit. So don’t assume if someone with an offer from School A commits to School B that a wait list slot at School A will open up. School A will only dip into the Wait List if they cannot fill their minimum class size.
We went through this process two years ago. Wishing everyone the best during this crazy period. Keep breathing!
Regarding Wagner, my husband sat in on the information session for the AM audition. They said they wanted to make decisions ASAP and that the students they want will hear in early March and the ones on the waitlist will learn at the end of the month. Guessing the earlier we hear, the better the news will be. Wishing you all the best!
Any rumblings from Webster? …asking for a friend
Same @CaliMTdreams same
Hey CC brain trust. My D has a spreadsheet going with different criteria for accepted programs. Viterbo is on her list. One category is “reputation”. What’s the feeling about the program among all you out there? She wants to know if it is “known”. Thoughts?
Want to add about waitlist - you may have to commit to one and then back out if you get off the waitlist at your favorite school. It happens.
Also - when visiting schools make sure you check out dorms and cafeterias etc. Make sure your kid is comfortable with that situation -esp in the city if your kid is from a rural area and not used to the city lifestyle. Mine ended up being much more comfortable with the newer dorms and facilities in the small town.
Hello CC clan! I have seen much conversation in here regarding Penn State MT acceptances and denials. Is there anyone else out there still waiting to hear anything? My S received notice of a “deferred decision” almost immediately after his NY Unifieds audition, but it seems everyone has heard one way or another by now, so I don’t know what to expect. It is like a “death march” to the mailbox lately…wondering if THAT letter will arrive. His Penn State “portal” is still “active” but no decision is posted. Just wondering…no news is no news in the end.
@azmtmom13 Virerbo has a great rep and so does its director!
@luvbloominroses Same here. My S also received the “deferred decision” notice after Chicago Unifieds and nothing since.
@azmtmom13 I’m biased, as I’m a Viterbo alum, but during my time in the program I definitely watched the profile of the program rise. The school is definitely well-known for turning out consistent, well-rounded performers in the major Midwestern markets (Chicago, Minneapolis, Kansas City), and the school’s reputation in New York is rising as well, due to faculty members with strong ties to the NYC market. Viterbo has had several alums make their Broadway debuts in the past few years, and many Viterbo alums have been very successful in landing cruise contracts or working for theme parks. Is the school going to have a reputation as strong as some bigger east coast schools? No, and that’s probably because historically, this school’s MT program mostly recruited regionally (with some exceptions, like Unifieds), and it’s only in the past several years that the department has invested more resources into recruiting nationally. Viterbo also puts a big focus on finding the market that will be right for you post-graduation–it’s not NYC or bust at Viterbo, which I think probably contributes to the school being a little less well-known in that market, as Viterbo grads don’t move there en masse every May. I moved back to Toronto post-graduation for a variety of reasons, but had I stayed in the US, NYC would have been nowhere near the top of my list of places to move to after graduation.
@CanadianMTgirl @4angels thanks!
@Tnkdd - Regarding trying to get additional aid (merit, talent, whatever the name), I don’t think you should wait until near the end to call because the money may be gone by then. Call early. If they have no money, you can ask them if it makes sense to call later after they’ve heard back from others - don’t commit to the school before they either offer you the additional money or its May 1. Good luck! I love hearing about all the acceptances.
@NoMTinMD Regarding whether dorms fill up before BFAs are able to commit, it’s definitely dependent on the school. I think I recall Penn State saying that preference is based on when you put in your housing deposit. Since that school is a rolling admissions school, it could disadvantage the BFAs. USC also has that rule, but I’m pretty sure at USC they will refund your deposit if you don’t matriculate- so if you are accepted- send in the deposit as soon as you hear. Don’t wait until you decide. Ask for Syracuse, your housing deposit needs to be paid by May1. There is no preference for early deposits, so BFAs are
@afterp89 Thank you! I didn’t realize that, I will go back and look into the offer again. I guess it’s more of a request?
@Danzerotti Thanks for the info on Wagner! Fingers crossed we will all get great news this week!!!
Two years ago, like many of you, we were waiting on those YESs after a very great audition season. They certainly did come after much stress and waiting. Ironically, the one program our D felt an affinity toward ever since we had taken a tour her junior year had given her a redirect. That redirect was very early in the season as it was one of her first auditions. In retrospect having that audition early may have not been a smart move but things happen for a reason. Regardless of the redirect, that school remained on her list as her back up with the thought that she could take the BA and double major in Telecommunications/Film. Come Spring break she had a couple BFA acceptances and she had narrowed it down to one of them. We went for a visit to tour, observe classes, and take a vocal lesson with faculty. It was literally on this campus that she said she felt the pull toward the BA and the possibility of the double major. It was the nuttiest plot twist that any of us had experienced but we followed her lead. I can tell you that we heard many questions from her mentors back home but it was the best decision she could have made for herself. She is fulfilled and revered in both majors and has had so many opportunities because she has been open to new experiences. I guess my point is that while our children are pursuing the coveted BFA they are also learning more about themselves and what the world has to offer. Help them listen to their hearts and they will find what fits them whether that be the BFA or the surprise BA (or two). I’m putting this out there because another CC parent of the surprise BA (@bisouu) shared her story during my D’s senior year. I feel that my husband and I may have pushed our D toward the BFA had we not heard her D’s story. In the case of our D we could not imagine things any other way. Good luck to you all as you get through this tough month of March but throughout it all remember that your children are so very talented and it’s this talent and drive that will help them through this ridiculous process.

LIU Post - I hope everyone else has better luck with a phone call than I did. I called the number on the letter, but I’m pretty sure I just got a student. She just kept putting me on hold. She just said they’ll send an email if they think your student is a good fit for the scholarship. When I asked her when those go out, she finally asked for a name and phone number. She wasn’t really interested in finding out what student I was even talking about before then.
NW is looking better. They are extremely helpful and attentive, and know about my D when I speak to them. My daughter really liked both schools though, and LIU is so close to NY.
@Tulsa-Mom That’s really unfortunate that you had that experience with Post re: financial aid. My experience was better from a phone conversation standpoint, but we don’t have aid numbers yet, so I don’t know how much it helped. Did you ask to speak with the person who signed the acceptance letter? I think that’s who I spoke with - definitely not a student.
