The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

@SingerDancerMom I found it! Thanks for your input. Of her three acceptances so far, ECU is the only one she’s visited. She didn’t fall in love with it. However, I would really prefer not to say no to any program until we’ve seen all three schools. We haven’t even heard from every school yet! This process has been so complicated with more than 20 schools on our list. I really feel that it’s unfair to put her in this spot.

@marchells01 Sent you a private message

@katzenbogen - I will send you a PM about Sarah Lawrence.

re: ECU
I don’t think that’s right for them to ask for a commitment before the deadline. Especially since I am pretty sure that they still require you to reaudition after your freshman year (though that might have changed.) I would reply very politely that she it is definitely one of her top schools, but she is waiting for replies and financial information before making a final decision.

@“paicked in the suburbs” I cannot speak for @SingerDancerMom but no red flags for us at BoCo! Feel free to PM me and I can put you in touch with her directly. Of course, most kids and their families get pretty tribal about whatever school (or whatever path - gap year, etc.) their kid ultimately chooses. That’s the most rewarding part of this long journey. Great outcomes, often in unexpected places.

@dramaLiama18 thanks !

@paickedinthesuburbs No red flags at all. BoCo is an amazing place and the faculty is incredible. Hard to imagine a better MT education anywhere else. But it is a conservatory. All of the kids there are artists. If your child wants to branch out and fill her social world with people who have a variety of interests it’s probably not the right place.

@collegehelp! I don’t know about UARTS. But we did have a friend go to Marymount Manhattan for MT. Student transferred to SMU/Acting sophomore year. Reason was NYC was just too overwhelming being only 18 years old for this student. No reflection on the MT program at Manhattan Marymount. It was just to soon for the NYC intensity for this kid. Happier at SMU and the fabulous college environment SMU offers … but not getting all the MT training. SMU has a MT minor. But not a true MT school. SMU is better school for Acting, Dance or Vocal Performance degrees. Just one story … but this child thought they were ready for NYC at 18 but once there realized it was to much to soon. But for many NYC is a terrific adventure at any age! It’s a very individual choice when one wants to tackle the Big Apple.

@paicked in the suburbs if your child was accepted to BoCo and is interested in going, he/she is in for an amazing experience! No, absolutely no red flags. It’s an awesome place. A conservatory isn’t what my daughter wanted but she ended up falling in love with everything that makes BoCo so special.

What about performance opportunities with such a large class at boco ?

@SingerDancerMom thanks ! Thought so that was our impression just making sure we weren’t missing any signs … I know it’s different for each kid etc

I’m just chiming in because I’m a BoCo mom. My D (a sophomore) is incredibly happy there, but I certainly agree that it is an intensive arts environment in a city. There isn’t a football team or a quad or Greek life. There are plays and musicals and cabarets and constant performing and very solid triple threat training, with particularly strong MT dance. It’s one kind of MT program, and I agree with @SingerDancerMom that if your student wants a social circle with humanities and science kids, it wouldn’t be the best fit.

Hi @1bamom thanks , do they socialize hang with Berklee kids ?

@“paicked in the suburbs” My D was an orientation leader last fall and met Berklee kids in that process, but I don’t hear her talking about socializing with Berklee students. I get the feeling the MT kids are pretty tight with each other, but I know some of the kids share apartments with BoCo dancers and musicians.

@CaMom13 would you PM me about Sarah Lawrence and in particular MT opportunities too? My D got in EA awhile back with a nice scholarship and I’d love more intel!

@mammameuh - I don’t have any inside info! Sorry - I just didn"t want to weigh in on a college here when it’s really not an MT program!

No problem, @CaMom13, thank you anyway!

D accepted to Wagner today via snail mail-big envelope-with a really nice scholarship! Nice to end the week on a high note after a string of rejections! Thank you all for support, encouragement, humor, and information this week, and hoping for some great yeses for all next week!

Congratulations to your D @mammameuh!!!

@1bamom @“paicked in the suburbs” @SingerDancerMom @mauidad We should be having this convo over on the BoCo thread! In fact, I’ll copy my comments over there. But anyway…my daughter is a freshman and she has roommates that are dancers and MT and they are very supportive, attending each others’ productions. There are also so many schools in close proximity in Boston, she has friends at BU, Emerson, etc. within walking distance, so she gets outside the bubble. Fenway Park is right next door. The BoCo class of 60 is divided into 4 cohorts that rotate each year so the classes they take are small (15) and, by the end of 4 years, kids know the entire class really well (for future networking!) Only a few freshmen are cast in the main productions, but there are tons of performance opportunities with student productions and many blend instrumentalists from Berkeley with performers from BoCo. They’re working on casting the Freshman Revue now, which features the entire MT class. The atmosphere is competitive (crazy talent!) but warm and supportive with individual attention to each student’s needs and development. It might not be the environment for every kid, but it suits mine to a t. They did lose a few kids from the class during first semester, which, from what I hear, is not unique to BoCo. One wanted more of the big campus all-around collegiate experience, one left for financial reasons, I think.
