The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

Prescreens must be tougher this year. My d passed all accept 2 because of low ACT score and 1 I’m not sure but it is also a more academic reach. But getting past prescreens didn’t mean much! Are you and her friends going to both Unifieds?

@elledaspitzer, I have a son who is a senior and starting the crazy audition season!

@2019wolves, true! We won’t pass all prescreens either, of course. Best of luck! I applaud you for your tenacity! I’m sure if my son could see fitting in more, we would be right there with you

@2019wolves just curious what part of the country you live in - hopefully not out west. Honestly If we lived on the east coast we would have had more schools on ours too. We are in Ohio so stuck relatively close but there are plenty of options.

@2019wolves We’re right there with you…

@MTdreamz Yes, going to Unifieds and a handful of on-campus auditions as well.

@MTdreamz Unfortunately yes, we are on the west coast ?

My D is probably applying to at least 35 - minus the ones where she didn’t pass the prescreen. There are quite a few that had zero application fee or were willing to waive the fee and she applied to many of them. Some are rolling admission and can wait and others thankfully let you submit the prescreen first before applying (Syracuse and Otterbein). I really wish every school that has a prescreen would let you do that - college athletes don’t have to apply to schools to have coaches scout them.

@afterp89 I wholeheartedly agree that it is a moneygrab for the colleges to require you to apply before the prescreen. It’s not like they reduce the number of prescreens they have to watch by filtering out kids who wouldn’t be admitted academically to the schools at that point. The applications haven’t been reviewed.

@afterp89 which schools didn’t have a fee??

@elledaspitzer some schools waive the application fee if you do a campus visit (email admissions people to see - you should get in the practice of emailing the admissions counselors now anyway). Others you can apply free through the Cappex website.

Arcadia was free through the Cappex website or if you go to their Open House, Baldwin Wallace was free to apply but pay to audition, Brenau (Cappex), Butler, Centenary, Emory & Henry (Cappex), Hartford (Hartt), Manhattanville (Cappex), Millikin, Nebraska Wesleyan, Oakland University, and Viterbo (Cappex).

In looking at the Cappex site again, AMDA just joined so you could apply there for free (not sure about audition fee). Drake and University of Tampa are also on there. Not sure which other schools on there offer MT.

Need info re MARCAS from anyone who has previously attended. The schedule indicates MT callbacks from 2:00 to 5:00, with the Dance callbacks starting at 4:00. The MT audition requirements state one monologue and one song. I am assuming there is no dance for MT, yet they have dance check-ins starting at 1:00. Can/should MT students also audition for dance. Just a bit perplexed. And if the MT students audition for dance and the callbacks are scheduled from 4:00 to 5:30, do you really get out of there by 5:30? Just wondering for flight info since my D has an audition on Sunday at 10:00! We don’t know if we’re coming or going. Just trying to stay sane.

@2019wolves I feel for anyone on the west coast.
WOW I thought we were busy last year but not sure there were many of us applying to that many schools. 18 was bad enough! I am impressed and will be sending good thoughts!

Does anyone know what schools have the best gender-related initiatives out there? In particular, I am limiting my college search to those applications that identify at least 10 genders in the application form.

I’m concerned about ending up on a college campus that does not respect our freedoms and does not allow us the space to be shielded from hate speech. Thank you.

@BWmama haven’t been but my D is going. My understanding is they are doing auditions/portfolio reviews for Acting, MT, Tech and Dance majors with MT students auditioning with their one song/monologue in one of the morning slots, call backs in the afternoon 2-5 - might be asked to dance during call backs. Dance auditions and callbacks are for Dance only students.

@genderequality Interesting you would post that. Very recently I watched an excellent FaceBook Live with the head of musical theatre at Pace University and Mary Anna Dennard (college audition coach) Pace is doing Les Mis with a male bodied Eponine. So that school would be one of the first places I would look. Good luck to you! Name of department chair is Amy Rogers. I don’t know how to search previous posted FaceBook live events but I am sure you can find it

@afterp89 That makes sense. They just don’t state anything about dance callbacks related to MT on the site, but it’s possible that it’s there somewhere and I missed it. Do you have to fly in? I forgot to schedule a flight and now it’s twice as much! Just can’t remember everything.

@BWmama fortunately it’s a drive for us and grandma’s house is less than an hour away. We’ll drive to her house Friday night and then over in the morning. East Coast has advantages for some schools - but we’ve got to fly to get to the Midwest and eliminated all the West Coast schools.

@genderequality Some schools offer the option of “other” and the opportunity to describe your individual situation. I would contact the admissions counselors before eliminating any schools right away - some might surprise you. For instance, West Virginia University has an LGBTQ+ living and learning community with a dorm that allows students to be assigned with anyone of any gender and/or orientation. We just saw a show at Arcadia where a couple of the actors used they/them pronouns in their bios and there was cross-gender casting of traditional Shakespeare roles (of course Shakespeare did that too!). Bottom line - do a little digging beyond just the options on an application form.

@genderequality, the only place I saw 10 genders listed was the University of the Arts. A lot of MT schools are on the Common App though, so that wouldn’t be school specific.

One thought I had for you is that once you’ve narrowed down your list of schools, type in #school #transgender and see if that school has any hits. For example, I tried this with University of Michigan and a ton of resources come up. Then, you can contact one of the groups and see if you can have a phone interview. Or, email them…Share your concerns and see how people address them.

I am truly hoping you find what you’re looking for! BAL to you :slight_smile:

@genderequality I agree with above - don’t limit yourself because a school doesn’t offer at least 10 gender options for you on their application. Right off the top of my head, I remember Elon being very accepting and encouraging to those who identify differently from what sex they were born as, but I don’t think there were 10 options on their app.

And as also stated above, Common App is used for many of the schools, which definitely didn’t offer that many. You might be missing out on some amazingly accepting and encouraging schools by having this as a requirement. Best of luck!
