Wonderful early news @StageDad311!
Thank you @artskids! There was certainly a big sigh of relief with Belmont’s acceptance!
@StageDad311 congrats thats awesome.
question i noticed in the Belmont website they state that “musical theater admission decisions will not be made till march 1st” do you know if they formally changed that policy- did they speak to that at the on campus audition? or do you think thats just to avoid questions throughout the process?
@StageDad311 never mind- read further and saw this:
“Musical Theatre admission decisions will not be made until March 1.
If you have received your University admissions decision prior to your audition, you will receive your audition results within 3-4 weeks after the audition.”
Does anyone have thoughts re. USC’s new MT program?
@StageDad311 That’s great news about your daughter’s acceptance! I pulled out the paperwork from the audition day and it said that you will find out 3-4 weeks after you have been academically accepted. She didn’t receive her academic acceptance until last week, so we figured out that was the delay.
@mtnyc19 - I have a few thoughts on USC. I don’t have a class of 2023 applicant, btw, and I am located in LA so I know kids who have gone to USC for different degrees.
It’s a brand new program so there are no alums to consult. They appear to be pulling it together as a cooperative effort between their excellent schools of theatre, music and dance so the training will be first rate. What I question a little is the coordination aspect simply because it’s so new. I believe the theatre department is the major owner so it’s like getting a drama degree with heavy training in music and dance and there may be some “bumps” in getting that combination to gel into a cohesive program. For instance they are asking for two dance prescreen videos, which is a little unusual so that says to me there’s some effort to really balance the power of the 3 different programs and I would worry a little that university political power balancing may take some ironing out and the students will need to cope with that.
I would personally think USC is a great choice for MT folks who really want to go to SC. It’s a university with a strong local name, fan base and alumni network. Otherwise, I would “wait and see” - I feel like the first few classes may be on the “bleeding edge” of innovation for this program.
Thank you @NYYFanNowMTdad and @carriemc95! The “March 1st” statement is confusing, because it’s not consistent with the “3-4 weeks after academic acceptance” statement. It made me go back and re-read my D’s acceptance letter, just to make sure I didn’t miss something My D was academically accepted in September, so it makes sense that her MT acceptance wasn’t delayed.
Best of Luck to your D @carriemc95! A big “YES” in a couple weeks will make a great Christmas present!
@mtnyc19 USC was supposed to role out their MT program last year. Then at last minute they put off applications for a year to relaunch it this year. They seemed to not have it all in place in time for class of 2022 as originally promised. Now a year later hopefully it’s ready to launch. I remember they were going to focus on a more contemporary MT curriculum when we looked at it last year. I’d investigate the MT director’s credentials and see if you think that person would be someone your child would want to study under. That said MT BFA programs catch fire quickly once out of the gate. For example CAP 21/Malloy, ELon & Missouri State University are all on fire with applicants. So a BFA program in MT can get buzz fast. LIU Post offers spots quickly but its facilities are lacking, so be sure to visit before accepting. We were shocked to see only had a black box to perform shows. State of Art theater on campus, but students can’t use it…only professionals. LIU Post needs a cash infusion to update its facilities. You won’t have that problem at USC. Beautiful campus with great facilities but high tuition.
@Penny1234 I have found scheduling to be the biggest challenge. We are going to Chicago specifically because they have 4 days, but as of now have only been able to schedule 4 auditions in those 4 days. It is a puzzle and our pieces just didn’t come together as we had hoped. We had some schools who were very specific in providing day and times for voice/acting and dance auditions and others that just gave a day with specifics to come 2-3 weeks before Unified. Between those differences and the order the audition ‘yes’ came, we struggled to schedule more than one in a day. We had originally hoped to do 7 there! To me that has been as frustrating as the yes and no drama!
I have been a follower of the board for a while but just now feeling enough confidence with the process and what is happening to weigh in. As I’ve read through, we’ve experienced some of the same highs and lows that others have shared. My D’s first 2 audition results were ‘no’ (Elon and Ithaca) followed by a succession of ‘yes’ results from some of her top reach schools (CMU, Boco, Syracuse, Pace, Penn State). I agree that it is tough to try to rationalize what seems to be a completely random process. I know everyone is getting ready to go underwater with the audition process so BAL to all! My D has 9 auditions in the next 10 weeks (including her high school musical!) so I’m just trying to keep organized and make sure we know how we are getting to/from everywhere and have places to stay once we get there!!
@mtnyc19 @Kkrazie @CaMom13 We toured USC last year for class of 2022 and D ended up not applying - fortunately! I agree with your comments - it will shape up quickly once it does launch, but she didn’t want to be in the first class experiment with such a huge price tag. The drama facilities paled in comparison to the world class film school (and the football stadium!) right next door. That said a lot about the school’s priorities. On the plus side, there are lots of film students looking for actors in their projects - no shortage of opportunities for drama majors. Will be an interesting program to watch.
Hey friends! My D is already agonizing about what she’s going to wear to all her auditions. Anyone know what they’re wearing to their dance calls? Leotard? Skirt? Legging? My D would be most comfortable in a T-shirt and leggings but we both know thats not going to happen lol.
@MTMomma13 My D has seen mostly leotards with tights or leggings although a few of her schools have been specific with what they want. She wears Leo’s and tights because she can wear the tights with her dress (her personal choice). I hear if you wear the same color as your audition outfit you can be identified by that color, but that’s just word of mouth from other parents. I would definitely check specific requirements for schools and follow those. But in absence of instructions if it’s form fitting, shows lines and she’s comfortable that is probably most important. But we are just going through this ourselves so someone experienced might say differently.
We like the Hampton Inn North Campus when we go to Ann Arbor. @mt summer help
@MTMomma13 My daughter wears a leotard with flesh colored tights and a dance skirt.
@MTMomma13
My D got the advice to match tights & dance shoe color to elongate her line. She does that with matching skirt & different colored leotard.
@carriemc95 @MTSongbirdMom thank you so much! That is definitely helpful!!!
In other news, my D just passed her Pace prescreen! Now that’s a relief!
and thank you @NYart15 ! so nude jazz shoes/ character shoes over black ones?
@MTMomma13
Nope!
She does black tights, skirt, jazz shoes.
