The Five Song Playlist Thread

(This thread is brazenly derivative from collegehopefull’s stress reliever one, but whatever, you all love it, divas)

Waiting for the EAA deadline is absolutely brutal, so in an effort to put our minds off our impending doom whilst simultaneously getting to know all the fine gentle(wo)men of the CC yale EA community, I’m creating a little musical smorgasbord for all you lovers out there to consume.

Basically, how it works is, you get five songs to make a playlist out of. If you are an experienced mixtaper, you know this is not a very large canvas. But nobody wants to listen to some kid who puts Beethoven’s entire discography, so you get five songs.

Don’t be annoying and put five of the same artist’s tracks. You’re well rounded. Be musically well rounded. Post the songs in YouTube links so they’re easy to listen to. Try not to post crappy live recordings, but if that’s your only option whatever. I’ll go first!

.

Martha Argerich = ew!

martha argerich = amazing!!

martha agerich = cold and sterile!!

My subjective opinion is more correct than your subjective opinion! >=[

But no, seriously, I’ve yet to hear a performance of hers that I actually liked. =/

I have to admit that I don’t like her rendition of some pieces, but I do like her take on the Tschaikovsky. Truce? :)

PC1? Yeah, I like that…mainly because of the orchestra. :P

llpitch, we have the same taste in music (disregard my playlist before… it was specific to college apps).

Yay for music buddies lol.

^ The Flobots’ entire album is great…

Handelbars is the type of song where you’d expect the band to be a one-trick pony, but not at all. :)

^ Flobots suck. Get some taste.

Uh…my iTunes library consists of about 983 artists, 2578 albums, and a total of about 77 days’ worth of music. All acquired one album at a time. I think I’ve heard enough music to make sound judgments about the relative quality of various artists, given the particular contexts. ;)

yawn, just because you have lots of music doesn’t logically imply that any of it is actually good.

Watch that last youtube video of Andy Mckee, and then go compare his talent to Flobots’ utter lack thereof.

Uh, do you really think I’ve never heard of Andy McKee? Hell, by the time Andy McKee was just starting to get popular, I was already growing tired of the whole fingerstyle/open-tuning/percussive acoustic guitar style. And my music spans approximately 3,233 years, 25 languages, 43 countries, and 56 different strands of musical tradition (aka, genres), so I’m pretty damn sure that a good chunk of it will, in fact, be good.

Just because you’ve experience “good” music doesn’t mean you have to be an elitist who denigrates music you consider yourself “too good” for. I’ve heard more different types of music than most will ever hear in their entire lifetimes, but I still have no problem listening to something simplistic or derivative - such as The Raconteurs.

sigh

Never mind. Some people just don’t get that music is art, and that art is expression. There are no “wrong” or “right” ways to express one’s self, and there are no “wrong” or “right” ways to make music. Maybe in a couple years you’ll realize this, but most likely not (most don’t).

By the way, there are many people who would think that your taste in music is exceptionally awful. It’s a circle of genre elitism, and its omnipresence is absolute.

^ Would you also claim that Michelangelo’s “David” and a misshapen bowl I make out of clay are equally valuable because “there are no rights or wrongs in art?”

Don’t be ridiculous. There are standards of beauty in every art.

EDIT: This was supposed to under the post below lol

w00t. Now that’s what I’m talking about. Quality playlist right there.

Cold War Kids and Oasis FTW!

I’m guessing you’ve only heard Handlebars, huh? I’m not particularly surprised. By the way, maybe you ought to learn what real atonality is. Messiaen would be ashamed.

I’d certainly give props where props are due, but I wouldn’t go out of the way to criticize someone else’s taste in ceramic art. Heap all the praise on Yelle you want, but it’s silly and petty to hate on The Flobots (who, by the way, play their own music - unlike Yelle).

Yes, I can appreciate both Wagner’s Ring Cycle and Blink-182’s Dumpweed. I see no paradox in this.

Btw, quite a few musical elitists vomit at the mention of Oasis. If you want to bring “artistic quality” into play, I’ve even seen them live and I still am not impressed.

W/e. We can agree to disagree. I’m just a very critical person (and yes, I admit, I am extremely elitist when it comes to musical genres haha).

Anyway, just out of curiosity, if you like the Flobots (semi-rap, I suppose), do you like “So Rich, So Pretty” by Mickey Avalon?

I just checked out Flobots after the two pages of argument and didn’t really like it, but in a similar vein I’d recommend the album Alopecia by Why?
