The Grandparent Thread

My dil just went back to work. They found their childcare worker through care.com. They have software for payroll and it’s working out ok for them.

My son said that daycares in his area are moving away from infants. Once their infants move into an older age group, they aren’t replacing the infants. Too hard to find workers.

So their option will be the individual childcare worker and hopefully transition her to daycare later, maybe once she turns a year old.

We live out of town and so can’t help

I have been watching GD 2-3 days a week since she was born (end of 2020). I bring her to my house once a week. D bought me a car seat. I have a great resale shop nearby, where I got a porta crib, stroller, and assorted toys. I got a high chair from IKEA (very inexpensive but really nice). GD is infatuated with her water table, and I managed to pick one up for our house on close out at ALDI for a great price. I pick up toys as she reaches new stages, and because she spends most of the day playing outside, I have lots of chalk, bubbles & balls. I found a Step2 plastic push car with a long handle at the resale shop … GD loves it & my back appreciates that I don’t have to stoop to push her. It’s fun to have things here for her to play with. She finally got into a daycare (D is very picky & was on the waitlist for the past year & a half). Beginning mid-September, GD will do daycare 3 days, and each grandma will watch her one day a week. I’ll bring her to my house for my day. It’s really fun - you will enjoy watching your GS!

Your upcoming setup sounds wonderful, @kelsmom!

One or two days a week sounds ideal. More than that can get much more challenging.

I have watched my grandson 50-70 hours a week since January, and have loved every minute of it. Yes, the hours can be challenging, but worth every moment. ETA, he will be crawling any day now, so the challenge may grow!

They are ALL very lucky to have you! And you are fortunate to be able to do this for them.

Think of the great bonding you are having with your grandkid rather than allowing some stranger to bond with your grandkids. Your kid and inlaw are VERY lucky they know their child is being well cared for AND bonding with grandparents!

First dental visit for the twins today. It went well. No tears. Both girls enjoyed their visit and got cool finger puppets to take home. Their teeth are in excellent condition–no cavities–although both babies have some mild misalignment due to pacifier/thumb sucking.

D says it’s so awful when she gets babies who come into the ER with mouth pain/fussiness/refusing to eat and all their baby teeth are just totally rotted. She says she sees it with surprising frequency. She had a toddler come in last week whose top & bottom incisors were all severely decayed and reduced to stumps. It was very sad and there’s absolutely nothing she can do for them except refer the family to a local pediatric dentist.

Whew! Just took Twin B to the supermarket with me. Although she was perfectly well behaved the entire trip, I’d forgotten how challenging it can be to shop with a toddler and how vigilant you need to be.

B is friendly and outgoing. Very much a charmer and she flirted with everyone-- checkout clerk, stockers, and especially older gentlemen/ladies doing their own grocery shopping. She chattered at them, waved, giggled, smiled and–her secret weapon–batted her eyelashes at them.

I hadn’t planned to take her, but when she heard her mom ask if I could pick up some groceries (SIL is out of town on business and D1 is post call, operating on about 4 hours sleep and has an OB appointment this afternoon which made getting to the grocery store problematic) , B ran to the door and announced she was going “help grandma.”

I’ll take Twin A next trip. Each girl loves have some special one-on-one time with grownups.

Sounds delightful!

GD had her 18 month check up yesterday & got her first Covid vaccine. The pediatrician had both types, and she recommended Pfizer for GD. I watched her yesterday, and other than being a bit quieter than usual in the afternoon, she was fine. D said she woke up chatting away at 6:15 this morning, and she sent a video of GD dancing to some tunes. So she seems to have had no side effects. And the child is definitely taking after her parents … she’s already 34”.

It’s so encouraging to read about all the parents choosing to vaccinate their children.
@WayOutWestMom are the teeth rotten due to babies and toddlers sleeping with a bottle?

Infant toddler decay can also be caused from breastfeeding. Babies fall asleep while nursing and breast milk has sugars in it.

Parents start babies on juice and sweer foods way too soon. Plus, parents should brush their baby’s teeth when they first appear so the child gets used to the feeling in their mouth.

I am traveling with D1’s family and D2 in Italy. We have 4 adults on one toddler, but by the afternoon we are just so exhausted from running after her.

7 month old grandson got his 2nd Covid vaccine this morning, so far with no side effects. I’m glad that the vaccine was finally available to those under 5.

My grand nibblings are getting their 2nd Covid shots soon. So far none of the grand nibblings have gotten Covid, despite some of them having classmates who had Covid.

My GD gets her second Thursday. She will have one more after that - she’s not in day care yet, so her pediatrician recommended Pfizer. She’ll be done with the series before starting part time day care in mid-September. We’re all breathing a huge sigh of relief for the vaccines.
