The Grandparent Thread

Yikes—lots of germs going around. I’m thinking of spending my time at my sister’s outside for Thanksgiving. She has a lovely yard and there are a lot of people coming for Thanksgiving.

Not a happy week here.
Twin A is going “cold turkey” on the pacifier since it’s beginning to distort her teeth. It’s taking her 1.5 hours to fall asleep at nap time and 30-45+ minutes of tantrum at bedtime. Twin B has been experiencing anxiety since the new baby arrived and alternately throws tantrum or deliberately misbehaves to get adult attention. (Pounding fists on the big TV screen, hitting people and pets, throwing food on the floor, deliberately emptying kitchen drawer contents or entire bookshelves…) She’s been getting up at least once and as many as 3-4 times at night and refusing to go back to bed. (Last night she climbed the dresser to turn on the overhead lights and repeatedly slammed the bedroom door while screaming for Daddy and Mommy. This, of course, woke up her sister who again got upset over the missing pacifier.) New GS started a growth spurt and is hungry & crying all the time. Plus Mom is back at work and is working everyday thru the Thanksgiving holiday (Wed 2-10pm, Thurs 10am-6pm, Fri 2-10pm. Sat noon-10pm, plus Sun 10pm to 6am the next day) It’s going to be a LONG weekend.

I know this too will pass, but I am soooooo looking forward to the remodel of apartment getting finished so I came move in. (Demolition starts first week of December and the gut remodel should be finished by May. :crossed_fingers:)

Late edit: forget to mention both twins are sick again w/ cold-like symptoms. Runny nose, sore throats. That isn’t helping things.

GD2 has RSV. They went to the pediatric ED, hospital overwhelmed with kids. Not sick enough to admit, but given instructions how to manage. She also has an ear infection again. Thanksgiving is happening tonight for H and S2, I’m going to S1 and DIL early tomorrow to help out. Basically all weekend plans canceled.

Wow way out west, your daughter must be exhausted.

My pregnant daughter in law (with a 3.5 and 1.5 yo) was admitted to the hospital Monday with asthma symptoms. They think a respiratory illness triggered it. She will remain in the hospital until she can get off oxygen. At least until Friday. So scary. So yes our Thanksgiving plans have been interrupted.

About the same as yours except we have put it off till Sunday. It’s wack-a-mole among all of us with who is sick with what and when.

@VaBluebird The thought crossed my mind to push dinner to Saturday or Sunday, but there was no way that would work. I booked our clubhouse almost a year ago, and the HOA management company was not working today; there is no way to know if the clubhouse was even available on of those days. Then there was the chance one of the adults in the house comes down with the flu. Lastly, all the food has been made, and the items that were put to freeze have already been moved to the refrigerator to thaw. So it is tomorrow or bust!

We moved to a townhome community 5 years ago and continued to host Thanksgiving using the clubhouse which is within eyesight of our home. I am thinking this is going to be my last year hosting as it is a pain to drag everything over there, and then back home to clean. Even with going to all plastic for dishes, cups, silverware, there is still lots of serving dishes, etc… and I am not getting any younger! While it is my favorite holiday and I have hosted for 25+ years, it is time to do something different. Both my kids live elsewhere, so we will go to them, or maybe a restaurant. My mother will have a fit, but we will cross that bridge when we get to it.

My brother told me today all 3 of his kids (7, 5 and 2) are sick. Brother is also not feeling well. 7 year old has ear infection, 5 year old is vomiting and 2 year old has a fever. SIL and 7 year old will stop by to say high outside with masks. It is supposed to be 80 degrees tomorrow at my parents where we will have Thanksgiving so we will be outside. I know my mom will be sad everyone can’t be there. It sounds like many of us have sick family this holiday.

I am amazed that all your grandchildren sleep through the night. That’s just not happening with DD’s babes, or DS’s. There may be some bed sharing (okay, maybe all the time with DD). Hope you all have a lovely Thanksgiving with your families. I will have the 9- month old, 10-month-old and 3-year-old and parents here along with dogs, other relatives, various cousins. One or more of the little ones seem to be sick at any given moment. It’s been a brutal winter for viruses and boogers and ear infections, and winter isn’t even here yet…

I believe I’d letter her have the pacifier and pay for the braces.

It’s deforming her hard palate, not just distorting her teeth. So fixing her mouth would require more than just braces. Her twin is a thumbsucker and her teeth are also very noticeably bowed. That’s going to be a harder habit to break. They’re consulting a pediatric dentist and their pediatrician before they resort to thumb guards and bitter liquids

This is a parental decision, not mine. However, both twins did sleep through the night last night. So did the 2.5 month old. So the house is bit more well rested today.

It’s hard to break comfort habits, but sometimes it just has to be done (especially when the parents decide it must be done). Fortunately, it doesn’t usually take too long, and kids typically don’t even remember. They are pretty resilient.

Sorry, I didn’t read down soon enough to learn about the hard palate issue. I just remembered how hard it was for my kids, especially D, to give up their pacifiers. Fortunately, neither one required braces. I hope things work out well for the twins.

D and SiL have put away GD1’s pacifier and only give it to her if she cries at bedtime. They asked us to not offer one at naptime, but GD1 learned quickly to just ask us. We’re not offering, just allowing if asked. She makes sure she has a spare on her bedside table, too. She’s having a tough enough time coping with the new baby and lack of attention at home. There have been days when she has not wanted to go home after spending all day with us. I figure she needs all the comfort she can get right now.

Sending good wishes to everyone and hoping that good health is coming soon for all.

GD and GS are pretty healthy right now, but it has been a tough couple of months. Those coughs just hang on!! GD has had an ear infection and RSV. GS has had strep, RSV, and Influenza A. Both kids had nebulizer treatments for several days after the RSV diagnosis. GS has missed so much school already. By the way, did you know that for a mere $295 the mobile lab can do a Respiratory PCR Panel including COVID-19 + Flu A&B + RSV + 15 other pathogens?

We are all ‘pretty healthy’ this week and were together for Thanksgiving. SIL’s parents flew in and will be here through the weekend. D works today, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons/evenings. Then she has several days off, IF her partners and their families stay healthy.

When GS gave up his pacifier, D removed the bulbs and he held on to the hard part for many days. He even tried to hold that in his mouth a few times. GD refused to take a pacifier, though we tried.

Stay warm and healthy!

Sick GD made a rebound by Thursday morning waking with no fever. Was fever free Thursday, Friday and this morning, but woke from her nap this afternoon with 101.8. Was quiet the rest of the afternoon, but perked up after the Tylenol kicked in and a snack!

I don’t understand how the kid could have such a bad ear infection (according to the doctor) and the flu, and be fever free the next day and never really acting sick Why fever again; new infection of something? Might Covid test again tomorrow, although the parents won’t do anything different with her care; we have all been exposed to every toddler germ available at this point :mask:

My younger sister was a thumb sucker, and she also was having her upper palate deformed with teeth pushing forward – but the nasty stuff on the thumb and being old enough to know she wanted her mouth pretty, she did give it up. She was already 2nd/3rd grade but not thumb sucking a lot, but way over time to give it up. Her teeth straightened and all was fine.

My DD2 sucked her right 2nd and 3rd fingers on her right hand - and her older female cousin visited, painted her nails and gave her enough incentive to stop (age 5). DD1’s 3rd child/2nd boy is sucking those same fingers on his right hand (DD1’s older 2 were fine having pacifier taken away early). He is 14 months old now, so we will see when he can ‘give those fingers up’.

We put up the holiday tree this weekend. (2.5 ft table top pre-lit tree) Twins were oblivious to Christmas last year. This year they’re old enough to understand the holiday means cookies and presents so it’s going to be a fun season. So far the advent calendar has been a big hit.

Mom & Dad are trying to decide if they want to do the Santa Claus thing or not. Dad thinks telling the girls that Santa brings presents is lying to children, but Mom isn’t convinced that it’s harmful. No presents have appeared under the tree so it’s not an issue yet.

Small tree with all felt or felted wool animal ornaments so no worries about anything breaking. The girls are enjoying taking the animals off the tree to play with, then putting them back on.

S reminded me on Thanksgiving that finding out there’s no Santa destroyed his trust in adults. Maybe your SIL had a similar experience. It’s okay not to do the Santa thing, but there could be some tricky situations that arise with other kids.

I don’t know if any of you or your kids are having problems getting Children’s Tylenol. SIL went out yesterday to get some (Boston suburb) with no luck. Ordered some from Fresh for delivery today, but had a limit of one. SIL figured out how to get around that by ordering one of each flavor. Just an Fyi in case any of you are facing this as well.

My D hasn’t mentioned that about Tylenol, but she knows parents who are having trouble getting Amoxicillin prescriptions filled. It’s hard to get around here.
