Congrats
It’s interesting that the scar grew, along with her. I thought that when they operated on newborns, the scars basically disappear. I guess not!
My husband was born with a pyloric stenosis and had emergency abdominal surgery when he was six weeks old. (Young family on a Marine Base and his frantic mom was being told that all that projectile vomiting was normal). And yes you can still see the line along a good part of his stomach, including stretched out stitch holes above and below.
Yes on safety concern - I strongly suspect she was worried because of what she witnessed; concern he would be very lax on things, inattentive which could lead to injury. GD1 is older (14 months older), very verbal, seeks attention and engages SIL. Maybe because she felt DH would be ‘stressed out’, IDK. But originally DD1 was not going to bring GS1 and she changed her mind.
SIL is now ‘more experienced’ - but there are even times he asks me why I am holding the child’s arm (2 YO GD2) when we are in front of their house on a busy street, and I take no chances that the child is going to dart out (around SIL) and head for the street.
I have seen how quick these kids can be!
VeryHappy… Baby has double aortic arch/vascular ring. Was discovered at 4 month prenatal check. D had to have immediate amnio to determine if there was a chromosonal issue, specifically on the 22nd chromosome (which would have meant DiGeorges syndrome). Horrible time, Ultimate Cruelest part: praying for “only” a heart defect to be the best outcome. Thankfully, genetic testing proved negative. Cardiothorastic surgeon said heart surgery would be done in first few months, maybe even before baby leaves hospital.
I had not heard of that. Interesting. From Google, it sounds like something that can easily be fixed with surgery, with no adverse effects.
Yesterday I had one GS in the AM. I was able to take him to Occupational therapy, his nanny was out sick so I’m happy he didn’t have to skip. I brought him back to my house for a few hours and he was crawling all over, going up and down stairs and pulling up and cruising all over the house. He has a genetic condition and has hypotonia so any physical progress is heartwarming. Afternoon I had the other two local toddlers. 3 in a day makes this grandma happy. Today we are going out of town to visit our other grandchild.
Was it a patent ductus arteriousus?
My younger D was born that with too.
Yes, she was a 24 week preemie, so many weeks before it would have closed on its own. At the time, the incision was about the size of a thumbprint, but now goes from just below her shoulder to her waist. Really only noticeable in a bathing suit.
My friend’s daughter is 9 months older than mine and they closed hers with a medication, but then she suffered a collapsed lung (and got 3 scars from chest tubes) so they went back to doing surgery for PDA. this was 30 years ago so I don’t know what they do now.
D was 2 weeks post-term and a BIG baby (over 9 lbs). The pediatric cardiologist sent her home on supplemental oxygen because we lived at an altitude over 7200 ft above sea level and oral meds. He tentatively scheduled her for surgery at 6 months, but her duct finally closed on its own before her surgery date. D2 is now 35 years old. Her chest scars are from a double mastectomy (at age 24) not cardiac surgery.
Double mastectomy at age 24? Wow.
My GS had muscle weakness, (unexplained though saw neurologist and had MRI) on one side. He started PT at about five months. (His big sister who was 3 was explained to that he was going to “rolling school"
). Didn’t walk till about eighteen months. At four now, he’s doing much better. It’s not noticeable unless you’re looking for it.
DW and I wenr away for the long weekend (went to Lake Geneva WI and walked the whole Lake Shore Path). The wrinkle was that GS’s daycare was closed and D1 and SiL had to work. The solution was one his “aunties” from our Mexican place watched him. They both had a blast.
SIL went out of town for a few days and I went over on Friday to help D with the kids. We had plans to attend an ice cream social on Saturday afternoon and watch a movie together on Saturday evening. Plans quickly derailed on Saturday when GD ( age 3) refused to nap and was very disagreeable. She seemed “ off “ on Sunday morning, so D took her to ER. Long story short , she had a respiratory virus and was admitted for a night. She does have a history of this sort of thing including pneumonia. I had the baby ( 2 months)all day on Sunday.
SIL got home Sunday afternoon, went right to the hospital and spent the night so D could come home. I ended up taking care of baby on Monday from early AM until dinner time when GD was released.
I’m glad I am here to help but I’m tired…
Oh and GD is fine. She went to daycare/ preschool today.
@FallGirl I’m glad to hear your GD is feeling better and off to preschool. It must have been scary for all of you.
We had a great 4 night trip to visit our almost 3 yr old granddaughter. We had such a fun time. We took her to a trunk or treat at a nature center. At the first station which was about raptors she was mesmerized by the volunteer. Once she discovered the stations had candy her interest in the topic was out the window.
@BunsenBurner I think you were the one who recommended a rainsuit last winter. My granddaughter had a great time yesterday playing in the rain on their ranch. It was from REI and I think she is going to get a 2nd winter and likely even next year out of it. A bit expensive but worthwhile purchase.
It takes a village. Young people with parents nearby are very lucky.
Definitely! My local kids are lucky they have me as a backup when needed. My out of town kid feels the distance when her or her child are sick. She has no local help as the other grandparent is also a distance away. My daughter has mentioned this is one of the factors in her decision to just have one.
We were hundreds of miles away from grandparents and all our sibs when our guys were small. No local village.
Our sons will be in the same boat if they and spouse/partner have kids – one is 3000 miles away from us in a VHCOL area, and the other is 5000 miles away in the opposite direction in a war zone. Kind of cements staying where we are in retirement, as there are multiple airports to at least make trips easier. Have mulled regular trips overseas if S2 & DIL become parents. Will be a traveling grandma as long as I can make the trip! Did the overseas trip solo this summer (inc multiple trains & militarized border crossings) for proof of concept. Just have to pack light.
Precious times together!
Grand to be able to cast aside and trim down on local things as opportunities to have with family/grandkids can be arranged. In some ways combining vacation kind of travel with a twist.
Yeah, the twist is going to an active war zone to see my son, DIL and any children they are fortunate to have. They’ve already fled from one city for safety. Going there to visit is not quite a vacation.
