The Grandparent Thread

Certainly, understand the active war situation - which that absolutely makes being together more precious (with them appreciating you visiting). Is there any chance for them to live in another place/country in the long run?

My youngest son has battled Stage 2 testicular cancer this year, ending with lymph node removal surgery (major abdominal) Sept. 17 and “they got it all”. Two days after his diagnosis last winter, they found out DIL was pregnant! Looking for answers to their secondary infertility was how his cancer was caught!!
That little miracle was born last Saturday. :blue_heart:

GS is transitioning to a new class at daycare. He starts the morning in his “old” class and then moves at some point. It is going really well. His new teacher sent a note home “He knows what he wants and knows how to ask nicely. I love having in the class.”

Somewhat similar story with a friend and her husband. She became pregnant and he was diagnosed/treated. Unsure if they could have another child and she did.

Everyone surviving cancer, especially when young, find extra gratitude in every day. I have had 16 years since my aggressive cancer was diagnosed, and very grateful for surviving and thriving.

Exciting week for me! Got GD Monday when D & SIL went to hospital for induction. Tuesday, our GS was born…lots of excitement, D lost lots of blood (not quite a hemmorhage, but close), GS’s shoulder got stuck and needed an assist and then D’s BP went sub 40. Went from 6 med pros in the room to 16 real quick. Could have done without that. But he is here! Meeting all normal newborn targets except his known heart defect. Tests indicate moderate issue, so allowed to go home and will have surgery before the end of the year. We took GD back a day after the baby got home, to allow parents some adjustment time. GD didn’t want anything to do with Mom, Dad and especially the screeching baby- lol! Last night was their first for all four of them at home. Went over today…and everyone was exhausted. GD did not sleep thru night and GS was eating every hour. SIL took GD to park for a bit; Grandpa held GS so D could take her first shower since Wednesday and I did laundry/folded clothes/made beds/emptied dishwasher/made lunch/tidied up.

But our Big Boy is here at almost 10 lbs. No wonder why he’s eating all the time! That newborn pumpkin outfit I bought is going to be mighty tight, if it fits at all! We are blessed!

Congrats!

Glad to hear it was just a bad scare and everyone is fine. It’s hard for the older sibling to adjust, not to be the one and only.

Packing my suitcase today. I fly out to meet my new 9 week old GD Tuesday. I’ll be leaving the house at 4 am to catch a flight that leaves at 6:15 am. (What was I thinking? Oh yeah, only direct flight offered to D2’s town.)

H and I took dinner over last night to D1 and SIL. Our GD will be 2 weeks old tomorrow and she is doing so well. D1 has been fortunate that breast feeding has not been an issue and baby is sleeping a couple of 3 hour stretches at night so D1 can get rest. They seem to be getting into somewhat of a routine. I am so happy that our SIL has 4 months of paid paternity leave so he can be there for D1 and GD.

This past week D1 and SIL have taken a coup!e of walks with the baby and the dogs to a nearby park. SIL plays with the dogs and tires them out while D1 and GD get some fresh air. I love seeing D1 as a mom

I spent four days with my son and his 3 kids (6,4 &2). His wife and mother-in-law (who helps a lot with the kids) went to visit my DIL’s sister who just had a baby. I did school drop offs and took the 4 and 6 year olds to their soccer practice. Getting out the door is tough but otherwise things went smoothly. I got to watch their soccer games on Saturday and that was really fun. My 4 year old granddaughter is in TK and a friend of my DIL was helping in the classroom and apparently my granddaughter announced to the class that she was a little sad because her mom and grandma had moved away.

Made some small repairs to the 107 year old christening gown from H’s side of the family. GD is having newborn photos done tomorrow and D and SIL will change her into this for a few pictures.
