Only a matter of time before your GDs are saying that with you. ![]()
My GD turned 5 just after Christmas, so D and SIL postponed her birthday party until last weekend. They had birthday party at a duckpin bowling alley—old-time small pins, historic spot in their midwestern city, etc. D said the kids all seemed to have a great time. I was bummed that I couldn’t go. I got lots of photos and videos of the event.
Second snow day yesterday. GS and his mother have been been getting on each other’s nerves. He’s 3–which explains a lot. Last evening during before bed reading time, D tried to snuggle GS. She told him she loved him and called him her special little boy. He shoved her away and yelled, “I don’t love you. You’re a busted old pie!”
I have no idea how he came up with that particular phrase, but D is still laughing about it.
GD1 is not a huggy/touchy person. More often than not when I tell her that I loved her, she would either not respond or walk away. Last weekend when I was there for her birthday, she whispered in my ear, “Po-po, I love you.” I almost fell off my chair.
We have had lots of grandchildren time. We had two all day Saturday, three on Sunday, I watched one on Monday when his nanny was sick. This morning husband and I went to a special tree celebration at the two grandkids preschool. I’m really happy we have three local grandchildren.
We had nasty snow/sleet storm here. D1 and Sil have been off all week. GS’s daycare opened for the 1st time today and they took him. He was very excited to see his friends and his parents were excited to have a day off together without him home.
GD started getting sick Saturday & is finally feeling better today. She spent Sunday-yesterday on the couch or in bed - fever, sore throat, bad cough. D took her to the doctor Monday, and she tested negative for flu, Covid, RSV, strep. She still has a cough that hurts her, but she ate today & played a little. D & SIL work from home, and it was pretty easy Monday & Tuesday - GD just needed to be near them. Today was a little more challenging, but they were able to keep her happy for chunks of time by letting her watch Disney movies on an iPad (she doesn’t get to use technology, so it is a treat for her). She will come to our house tomorrow, and she should be fine to send to preK on Friday.
I just had a visit with GS (age 1.5yo) and I miss him so much! Apparently he is still asking for me. Wah!!
I am to work out of D1’s place for the remainder of this week because her H is out of town. Last night she called me to let me know that their nanny is not feeling well, more specifically she has lost her taste (I am thinking Covid). The nanny will still come to work because they have no other options. I can’t take time off from work to take care of two kids. D1 said she was letting me know for transparency purpose, but not really giving me any options to opt out. So this afternoon I am walking into a germ infected house. I am anticipating to be sick after this visit. Arrrg.
Could you wear an N-95? Open windows a bit?
During covid and even afterwards-when visiting our grandkids we wore masks and open the windows and tried to play outside. They were always sneezing or coughing. Much better now that they are 4 and 6.
Kid added a couple of new photos to our photo frame showing Little Miss Mess working on an art project at the daycare. What a mess!!
Kid joked that daycare saves them money on house cleaning and repairs! ![]()
The kids are all exposed to her. We are in the NE so it is quite cold out now, so we won’t be able to open the windows much to make a difference.
Just saying other infections can cause loss of smell, not only covid. I lost my sense of sm decades before covid was in the US, probably due to infections.
What I realized is, since they were used to masks during covid, post covid era they didn’t seem to think it was weird we were wearing ones.
Yes, I never wore masks pre-covid. Now I wear them indoors, especially in crowds & while traveling. I think it helps reduce my infections.
The nanny may be beyond spreading the germs at this stage with apparent Covid.
You can wipe things down a bit more but be very attentive on having clean hands when you touch your eyes/face. Wash your hands more. I wash my hands a lot anyway (habits in nursing).
Positive attitude! Good luck!
DD1 (FT work with 5 children ages 10 months to 7 years) made sure her husband had on his calendar she was traveling with work on a specific Tues-Wed-Thurs; she was traveling to a more remote facility with a work group (about an hour away from her regular facility) so he was responsible for picking up the two children from daycare and if any of the children were sick, he was the responsible one. It turns out the 2 oldest and the baby had fevers during that week (the older two did clear up by the weekend) - DD1 thinks the older two did have the flu, but thankfully good recovery.
We are states away, but when I have been there (and there for some one month to six-week periods) I handled the sick child(children) and no one needed to miss work time.
D and SIL had a conference with GS’s preschool teacher this afternoon.
GS is not going to be advanced to Jr-kindergarten next year. Although he’s doing fine academically, GS is not socially or physically ready to move up. He’s not making friends or playing with other children in his class. (He plays with his older sisters at recess.) He’s physically having trouble getting on and off the bus. Can’t hook or unhook his safety belt by himself. Finds the bus steps too high to get down from and falls off the bottom step frequently. At rest time, he falls asleep deeply and has trouble waking up after nap.
GS is the youngest child in the preschool class (30 students in 2 classrooms) by 2 months–and he’s a boy who is small for his age.
So, he’s being held back. He’ll be in the other PS classroom with a different teacher next year, not the one he has now so next year feels different for him.
I think it’s a good idea. When D and SIL asked my opinion about whether to send him to PS last summer, I told them I thought they should wait another year. D was ambivalent, but tended to agree with me; however, SIL felt strongly he should go.
I think it is hard to be the youngest and smaller in size, especially for a boy.
