The Grandparent Thread

I dislike doctors who allow a first baby to get way too big. It turns out GKids inherited the paternal grandfather’s big head (I am not kidding - none of the baby hair bands that went with GD’s clothes fit - way too small; same with caps for both gkids).

Due to head size in utero, baby #2 (14 months after baby one) was induced two days before due date - they thought he would be over 8 lb but he was 7# 12 oz like his older sister. DD’s water broke 3 days before her due date, so she was able to deliver a reasonably sized baby.

Some doctors don’t want to induce 1st baby for some reason - DD’s friend went over 2 weeks over and then baby was too big for vaginal delivery. When she unexpectedly got pg again pretty quickly, that baby was also c-section.

With the ultra sound technology, doctors have a lot more information available.

I needed pitocin drip for both kids, and 2nd was induced on same day as due date; doctor had a breach baby in the next room that delivered before me (not c-section, able to deliver baby breech). He was very seasoned OB.

Congratulations, @Bromfield2, to you and your family! Enjoy every single minute! Sweet name!

I went sledding with GS today. He was delightful! D and SIL’s backyard is a gentle slope, but there is water (frozen right now) at the bottom. I went down alone one time and got a little too close to the bank. He was yelling from the top of the ‘hill’, “Bale out! Bale out!” I took some Ibuprofen this afternoon…

My grand baby is back in the hospital for the night to lay (lie?) under lights (bilirubin issue). It’s pretty routine, but I am sure D is worried. When she got to the hospital, she found out that the nurse they were assigned is a young woman in the neighborhood that she grew up with. She’s glad to have someone familiar there with her tonight.

@kelsmom Hoping for a short stay for your little one.

@kelsmom, (HUGS) for you and your D. I hope it is a short stay and sweet baby girl will be home soon.

Happy to hear of the new babies and our newest grandparents!

@kelsmom, hope the hospital stay is short. My son was jaundice and I had to put him in the window for hours near the sun, to avoid a hospital visit; Not an easy task in February! Luckily, the sun cooperated and I had a big picture window which was west facing.

For those with their first grandchild, here is what you can look forward to; sorry for the thread interruption. My 27 month old GD still sleep in a sleep sack, but likes to zip and unzip it. Yesterday we get a video of her waking up from her nap while she unzips the sleep sack and pulls out 7 stuffed animals. She has a habit of putting them in her sleep sack and going to sleep it them inside! These are not all small stuffies, some are a good size; I am not sure how she gets them all in and is able to zip herself back up!

Today on the monitor, we get a video of her standing in her crib, throwing her sleep sack and then all the animals out of the crib. I texted my DIL and said, “At least she kept her clothes and diaper on, didn’t she?” The reply came back, 'Oh no, the clothes went off right after this video and she started threatening to pee on the bed so I had to intervene!" This kid is a riot and goes from the moment she wakes, until she finally falls asleep at night. That said, she is a whole lot of fun and a happy girl.

We had to put D in the sun, too. Grand baby needed more, but all is well now. Her levels are great, and she is home. Found out she is AB negative, so the Red Cross will be after her in a couple decades!

@kelsman Good to hear that D had support in the hospital.

So glad to hear she’s home, @kelsmom! S, DIL & GS spent the week between Christmas and New Year’s with us, mostly I think so they could get some sleep and a little time alone to go hiking. GS is 25 months old and goes to bed easily at 7pm (stories with Pop-Pop is enough to get him to head straight upstairs) but wakes between 5 and 6am. They (DIL, specifically) can’t get to sleep early enough to get a decent night’s sleep so they enjoyed some lazy mornings while H and I entertained our car maniac.

He is obsessed, can identify the difference between a car, a race car, a pick-up truck and a monster truck. His favorite thing to do is flip to the car pages in back copies of Cunsumer Reports. :joy: They realized that taking him to sit in a parking lot is better than the park, as far as he’s concerned! Yesterday I asked what he was doing and he said, “Rafi making a parking lot” as he lined his cars up in symmetrical rows. Mind you, at our house there are probably 60-75 matchbox-sized cars remaining from his father and uncle. He thinks he’s in car heaven. S and DIL also let him watch the Cars movie this week (first movie!). He was enthralled, but let them turn it off without a tantrum when they decided it was too long to watch in one go. He would’ve sat there for the whole thing.

We think he’s also almost ready to start potty training. Any advice from experienced grandmas here? Sorry for the following if it’s TMI. He tells us when he’s pooping and then announces “big poop” and asks whoever’s around to change his diaper. I don’t even remember potty training so have no advice for them other than not to rush him.

I am so lucky that they are close, are working from home, and remain cautious in the rest of their lives so we can see them. I know there’s still risk, but we’ve decided to take it.

We spent Christmas with our granddaughter (19 months). She is obsessed with dogs. They don’t have a dog, but we do so she loves him. We have a black lab, my daughter has a chocolate lab and my other son has a white golden doodle. So in July I bought her “Randall” a cute stuffed dog with all 3 colors (I think he is a Bernese Mountain Dog). Randall goes everywhere with her. In November she was with her other grandma and HAD to have this GIANT stuffed dog (now named Molly). So Randall and Molly go everywhere with her. It is super cute, except I guess when she wants to snuggle in Mom and Dads bed and bring both dogs. Her favorite show is Clifford the Big Red Dog.
Potty training. She signs a lot. She signs “potty” when she is pooping and when she is done she announces that she stinks. They have tried sitting her on the potty but have not been successful.

On potty training, DD and SIL had their own way. I think GD is taking after her dad regarding potty training. Both DDs were potty trained quickly. However GD is like some of the others here - not wanting to poop in the potty. They had her in pull ups but now realize she needs to be in the padded cloth training pants - and they can also use these unisex ones for her brother who is 14 months behind her. GS - they are thinking of one of those stand up urinals as he likes to stand a lot. GD has a special toy from Santa once she poops in the potty. I told DD to take a picture of it and remind her about it daily (it is put away now). GD was home with them a lot of time over C-mas and New Year’s but they made no progress.

DD2 was dry overnight about when she was 2 and that was a good signal to potty train. DD1 seemed to be interested (her sister is 25 months behind her in age) - since I gave DDs their baby book and 1st and 2nd year calendars I do not know exactly about when she was trained.

My niece follows the works of “Moms on Call.” I believe it is there method to stay home for a weekend and the child is to be without pants the entire time; not sure that includes naps and bedtime! The point is for the child to be aware of when they go and you can get them to the potty. It worked for my great niece; not sure I would do so unless I had no carpet and they weren’t allowed on the furniture! :joy:

My son and DIL follow no method, so GD uses the potty at times, and others she doesn’t. Remember my previous post where she threatened to pee in her bed so she could get out. She is plenty smart to be trained, she just isn’t motivated yet. Last week she wanted to poop in the yard like a dog :grimacing: Daycare works on potty training with them, so I guess she will get there at some point.

I have a friend whose older son resisted potty training for pooping. Well they were in CA traffic, he pooped in his diaper and had to sit in it as the mom was having car trouble and was afraid to stop. Sitting in his poop got him totally potty trained.

The younger brother got potty trained at mom’s morning out - the mom explained to seasoned day care worker and the worker said she would get him potty trained, and she did.

D, SIL & their little one were supposed to come for a visit on NY Day. D did precautionary covid test on 12/27 and results were back the next day that she was positive. SIL tested on 12/29 and he was also positive. They have been pretty cautionary, but think they picked it up a few days before Christmas when they had to put their dog to sleep. Fortunately, neither ever experienced any symptoms.
Anyway, they took rapid tests yesterday to make sure they were safe and came for a visit with me in the morning and her dad’s family in the afternoon today. I was able to hold a baby and we had masked outdoor hugs when they went on to the other family’s house. I miss human contact during covid. I hope today’s dose of it will last me until I get my vaccine. :crossed_fingers:

It’s wonderful that you were able to hold the baby! Hopefully, the end of isolation is not too terribly far off. Hugs to you, @2VU0609.

D1 told me that she doesn’t want me to have too close of contact with them the first week they are home from the hospital in case they get covid from their hospital stay. She said I could come over to see the baby with my mask on when they get home. After a week, I could stay over to help out with the baby. I got my whoopie cough vaccination in Dec, so I am ready. D1 is almost 37 weeks now.
