The Grandparent Thread

My D ended up in the hospital 8 days after baby Nina was born. Her c-section incision came open and she also had water in her lungs. My son-in-law couldn’t be there nor could the baby. D stayed two nights and then came home. Problems are under control after IV treatments and D feels much, much better. She was able to pump and son-in-law could go and get pumped milk, but couldn’t visit. Also, he was able to get breast milk from a milk bank. I really wish we didn’t live 900 miles apart!! We did lots of texting and FaceTime!

@2VU0609, I’m so glad you got to hold the baby! There is nothing like it in this world!

@oldfort, That is wise! Looking forward to the arrival of your new grandbaby.

@Bromfield2, Oh, my! That had to be SO hard! Prayers for your D’s continued recovery.

Oh my gosh. How awful for DD. Fluid in her lungs - Covid related, or what else was going on? IV ABT (antibiotic TX) helping her snap out of it, praise God! Physically wrung out but glad she is on the mend!

No COVID–negative test. Diagnosis was atypical preeclampsia. Treatment was Magnesium and Lasix (IV). Her BP during pregnancy was always normal and right after delivery it went up to 140. Incision not infected–nurses gave sil instructions on how to treat going forward. D says she feels 100% better and is glad to be out of the hospital. She was treated in the maternity ward. So happy she is home.

My incision was a bit infected after my C-section. My doctor didn’t even have me come in. He said to put neosporin on it. I was all better after few days.

@oldfort, I am very happy that you did not have any complications after a C section. Thank dog I had no C sections myself and no complications at the time. Two major differences I could see (compared with @Bromfield2 D): no fluid in lungs and the fact that MRSA as an HAI was not rampant back in the day we old geezers were giving birth. Drug resistant bugs are quite an issue now, so any incisions that do not heal quickly are a concern. Different times. May everyone’s kids and grandkids stay healthy (and their grandparents and parents, too).

I am sure Broofield2’s D is getting the best care and she should definitely listen to her doctor instead of someone on the internet. I was just giving my own anecdote story.

She’s here!!! Grandaughter#4 arrived this morning tipping the scales at 6lbs 15oz. DIL had preeclampsia and was induced at 37+ weeks when her bp started spiking. I’m happy to report that everyone is doing well. Her two big sisters, ages 7 and 4, are over the moon and can’t wait to meet her when she comes home. FaceTime is a wonderful thing during these crazy COVID times.

Apparently 37 weeks wasn’t enough time to come up with a name, since she is currently still going by “Baby Girl”.

Congratulations, @my-3-sons, to you and your family! Four girls ~ very sweet! I’m sure her sisters will be so happy to have her home.

@Bromfield2, How is your D doing?

I spent the day with GD today. She is so sweet. She’s almost 20 months now, and loves music and movement. She tries very hard to get ‘Alexa’ to play :musical_note:Wheels on the Bus and Twinkle, Twinkle. :musical_note:

If your GD want to sing, have her FaceTime with my husband and I. As soon as we answer, my 19 month old GD, yells Bus and starts the hand motions. She says the first and last, we sing the 2 in the middle!

My daughter is annoyed as my SIL taught GD that the dadas on the bus say “I love you” while the mamas say “shoosh” with finger to the lips. We have dogs and cats on our bus also. GD favorite is the people on the bus go up and down. She jumps up for that part and bends her knees and bounces; she is so cute!

Shyly stepping into the thread.

D1 had twins the first week of November. She managed to get to 38 weeks. (And was absolutely enormous! Her baby belly needed its own zip code!) Difficult pregnancy (several complications) with a difficult delivery. All made more complicated by Covid. (D1 is an EM doc and had trouble finding an OB who would see her because D1 had constant exposure to Covid patients at some of the most highly impacted hospitals in the NE.) During labor, B shifted to a transverse position and it took 45 minutes to reposition and deliver her after her sister was born. D1 just barely avoided a C-section.

I was able to drive out after SIL texted me to come ASAP. I had been quarantining in preparation for the trip for weeks & weeks. Babies were 9 days old when I got there. (Awful, awful drive–12+ hours on interstates with only stops for gas with two potty breaks. Plus a serious truck accident stopped all traffic for 3 hours so the trip took actually over 15 hours… Can’t believe I did it. I swear I will never ever do THAT again.)

Just spent 2 months with the family, helping the new mom & dad with feedings (every 75-90 minutes 24/7 because the babies were so tiny. B was at the 2nd percentile for newborns and A was at the 6th percentile), doing laundry, cooking, cleaning, dog walking–whatever needed doing.

Came home a couple of days ago to get my Covid vaccination and check on the house.

BTW, these are my first (and will likely be only) grandchildren.

Learned a bunch of cool things while helping with the babies.

D1 had bought Snoo bassinets for both babies. Snoo is an interactive bassinet with AI. The bassinet swaddles the baby, plays white noise and jiggles them at various levels of intensity depending on how restless they are. (You can also adjust the Snoo via an App without ever getting out ion bed. The app also give a visual record of your baby’s sleep-wake patterns so you can track them.) Snoo was designed by a pediatrician and are recommended by infant sleep experts. Expensive, but you can rent them instead of buying.

They also have a Baby Brezza–which is like an espresso machine that makes formula instantly. And with 2 screaming babies–you want 2 warm bottles NOW, not in 8 or 10 minutes.

And because snaps take too long to fasten and 2 way zippers may require you to re-dress a baby who needs a clothing change after a diaper change, D1 bought baby clothes with magnetic fasteners. So easy to use!
Two brands she likes are Magnetic Me and E=MC2 (Easy Magnetic Close)

D’s friend loaned her a Snoo. While many babies like them, my GD did not. D was glad she didn’t buy it! Good that it worked for your D … with twins, anything to help!!

D1 bought a Snoo. There is a good secondary market for it. You can also rent one, but she figured out it was better to buy one and re-sell it.

Double Congratulations, @WayOutWestMom! I wish you and your family all the best! What an incredible story! I am sure your D and SIL are so grateful to have you! And your grandbabies love being loved by you!

@snowball, GD will be happy to have a FaceTime with you soon.
