the Great British Baking Show- anyone else a fan?

H and I are loving this show.
The idea of making 12 identical anything makes me twitchy. We enjoy seeing their attempts and interpretations.

@bookworm, I used to make over-stuffed oreos. They were split, and a filling of sea salt caramel, crunchy natural peanut butter, or chocolate ganache (orange, raspberry, or mint) added, then the whole thing was dipped in high quality dark or milk chocolate couverture and garnished with a contrasting chocolate.

The only “bought” filling was the PB, because no one does it better than Teddie.

It’s back??? When I was getting ready for my wedding and needed to distress I’d watch all episodes I could find!

Oooh, must watch the new season!

@Consolation, those sound AMAZING! Can we convince you to go back to the chocolatier business??

ARGH! It looks like this season (Which they are billing as Season 2 in the US) I actually watched on US PBS last fall/winter. Boo hiss.

The show was more entertaining than I expected.

Anyone see tonight’s show?

Yes - I thought the level of criticism was unnecessarily cruel. These are amateur bakers, rightfully proud of what they created. In my estimation, Paul’s approach to judging tonight’s episode (quarter finals) was on the level of whipping a puppy who couldn’t quite avoid an accident. Love the support the contestants have for each other, but it didn’t take away the bad taste the juging left me with.

Bumping a this thread.

I have no favorites. I felt all those with a weakness have been eliminated.

Well, I am liking Kimberley. And I was surprised that ruby didn’t go home, as was she.

Anyone else watched?

Just got caught up this afternoon. Ruby is a stunning young woman, but her lack of confidence and constant apologies are annoying to me. I like Kimberly and Becca. I agree with the judges that Frances spends too much effort on the style at times. I love, love, love this show!

I am favoring Kimberley as well. Love that smile of hers and her consistency. Frances’ style is great and its fun to watch what she comes up with. Ruby’s sure is slipping as her confidence wanes.

Maybe this has already been posted–if so, ignore me.

Did some research: what’s currently airing on PBS is season 4 in UK. Season 6 aired in the UK in August 2015. D told me there are a couple of seasons on Netflix–will be checking that out!

Almost want Ruby to go home so I don’t have to watch her boohoo any more.

I was hoping Ruby would go home last night.

Speaking of binging-- am I the only one craving sweets by the time each episode is over? We usually only have dessert on special occasions. Yesterday I got an apple crisp out of the freezer in advance. This week I may have to do a proper bake in the afternoon.

Whos is Ruby? The show was far more entertaining than I expected. I am not a baker or a cook and usually avoid cooking shows.

She’s the lovely girl with the curly light brown hair. I believe she’s the youngest this time around.

^Thanks. I remember her!

I first discovered this show in my hotel room on a trip to London in 2013. I love that they let the competition to produce the best baked goods be the only source of stress for the competitors instead of amping up the show with a lot of vulgar sabotage between the bakers and phony drama. In contrast to an earlier poster, I find the judging a lot less cruel than some of the stuff I’ve heard on American cooking shows. I’m learning so much from watching these people work and I’m just humbled by their skill. I’ve baked cakes, cookies, and pies for years and my feeble efforts aren’t anything at all compared to what these contestants can do with one hand tied behind their backs.

Her name is Martha and she was my hands down favorite of last season. Only 17 years old and so skilled and mature, I want to clone her!

Why is everyone down on poor Ruby? She’s so lovely and sweet, even though she’s a bit insecure but you should bear in mind that she’s also a university student during the competition and has been trying to balance her competition in the show with her studies and exams. I think that she’s coping with a lot more than the older competitors without the life experience to help her manage the stress.
