the Great British Baking Show- anyone else a fan?

Just saw a promo on tv that they are doing a special 4 week Holiday Special of the show which starts airing on 11/30. Yippee!

DIL sent me that message via S last night. It will be on ABC for 4 weeks and Mary Berry is the host. I love it!

I don’t often read the links posted on FB or on CC, but this story on The Great British Baking Show in my FB feed was worth the click. http://www.vox.com/culture/2015/11/12/9724196/great-british-bake-off

Warning: spoiler about most recent season at bottom, but well labeled so you can quit reading there.

I saw last week that Ruby was voted Britain’s most popular contestant of all the seasons. My favorite, Martha came in third. I find it odd that PBS didn’t start with the first season when they began airing them. I need to scour Youtube to find the old episodes.

Ruby is cute, but she’s a Whiner. Never among my favorite personalities, let alone baker.

Still, cannot get enough of this show.

We aren’t the only ones in love with the show. Here’s another article that came through my email today providing an interesting and spot on take on the show. The squirrel mention and embedded link is a hoot.

(some mention of other seasons but I didn’t read any spoilers in here)

Ok, I’m confused. I watched a season on Netflix, which had Martha, and now I’m watching a season that has a man named Paul who keeps winning and Flora, who is 19. What season is that? Which season has Ruby? How can I watch all of these seasons, because I have become obsessed with watching this show, drinking tea, while I knit Christmas gifts!!! And I’m so excited about the 4 episode holiday show…did I mention I’m obsessed??

The season with Ruby is season 4 as I understand it and the season we saw last spring on PBS with Martha was season 5. Season 6 just finished airing in the UK and will hopefully air in the US after the beginning of the new year (fingers crossed). I’m not good with names, but I’m not remembering Paul or Flora in the two seasons I have watched.

The season with Ruby is currenly available on PBS, but only starting with episode 5. They leave the episodes up for only a short time after they air unfortunately.

I have AmazonPrime, and only one season is available (the one with Martha). Since Netflix has two seasons, maybe Amazon will get the other season, too.

Thank you! I must be watching Season 6. I’ve discovered the episodes on You Tube. Yay!

Both Netflix and Amazon have one season (with Martha) only. PBS has the incomplete season with Ruby

Oh, I misread SJTH’s original post as saying both seasons were on Netflix. I now understand that she/he watched the Flora and Paul season on Youtube. So it is off to Youtube for me!

Paul and Flora are in the most recent series (6) which has just finished in the UK.

Of CC note - Flora just began studying at St Andrews (History of Art I think) but she has now apparently taken a leave of absence after only about 6 weeks, in order to pursue opportunities in baking.

I looked in YouTube and wasn’t able to find complete episodes for season 6, starting with episode 1. Have others been able to find them?

Try putlocker.com They have several seasons.

Thanks! I will try it.

D was inspired after watching the finale and made pretzels. It took almost 3 hours, as on the show. They look awful, but taste fantastic!!!

In the show, the bakers roll out their pastry on top of a big piece of cloth that looks like a checkered table cloth. Does anyone use something similar or have recommendation? It looks a lot neater than rolling directly on my countertop.

I have granite countertop that is ideal for rolling, so I don’t use anything else, but they might be using a pastry cloth or a silpat. I never noticed, to tell you the truth.

If it is checkered, probably a pastry cloth.

The Great Holiday Baking Show starts tonight at 10PM ET on ABC. Is anyone else looking forward to watching?
