The Indian Thread #21

I think one should really ask for fee waivers if they are applying to a humongous number of colleges.
@rew2402: Will you be asking for FA?

It is super expensive. $1200 is just for the apps. We also take all those standardized tests which are approx $100 each for us. Fee waivers are a good option if you qualify for it. I don’t know the entire process either.

I think we should handle one problem at a time. There is no point dwelling over this issue as no one here knows anything about the app process for sure. Emailing the colleges is the best bet, anyone of us should give it a shot.

Really?? I gave the ACT this June too, so I am still not done with the tests. ;)

Don’t forget the 100$ your school charges for the making of transcripts. The Hiring of a counselor (if you want one) and mailing everything.

If any of the 16’ ers would be so kind as to explain the financial side of things, it would be great :)

Yeah, I agree with xNorth if any senior to use could tell us how the financial part of admission works… It will really nice of them :)

Your school charges $100 to make the transcripts? Really? I’ve talked to my principal and guidance counsellor about them but they never mentioned anything like that.

I have a question guys. My GC is not really a proper one. She has absolutely no idea about anything regarding college applications or anything. Would my principal be a better option for writing the counsellor’s rec? There are just 3 of us applying to US colleges from my school this year.

Well, I got free counselling from a consultancy, and they are brilliant! One on one help, admission process workshops and everything.

As for the 1200 Dollars, Is it really that much ? Wow, thats a lot of money. ANd don’t forget sending the sat scores/act scores to the colleges, that costs a bit too.

@anvesh95 what consultancy did you go to?

@ Idream, basically Rs.500 per transcript, so it amounts upto 100$ for round 10.

Wow. @north. Your school is really into money making!

@payaas. Yes. I need FA.
LOTS OF IT.
I am applying to just needblinds! (4 of then)
Yale is my dream school but I’ll be applying early at Pton.
Because of that accpetance fact that you earlier mentioned!

Whaat? I don’t believe that schools are supposed to charge YOU for something they are supposed to keep in records for. Don’t you pay them enough to attend secondary? I agree that the practice is not so in countries outside the system but the amount they are asking is a rip off. Are they embroidering it with silver or gold? lol.
Plus, you don’t hire a counselor. If you don’t have a counselor at school for recommendations you ask the next best authority that will act as one.
For people that don’t have good guidance in applying to schools outside their country, a consultancy would be a great idea but for recommendation, you don’t hire one…

Financial side:
SAT I: $100 (each time you take)
SAT II: $100 (each test and time you take)
AP: $100 (each test you take)
IB: $100 (each test you take
Common app/private app: $60-$100 most part (each app you turn in)
Sending transcripts: less than $10 for each place you send
Sending AP:*For AP, I think it was free if you put the name of the school when you took the AP exam.
*9 or 10 dollars to send your cumulative SAT score report PER college
All in all $1000 or more would be the total.
From what I remember, I had to pay over this amount just due to the number of colleges I applied to. Later on, it didn’t really make a difference because I ended up paying near 40k per year for college. That is including scholarship of course. So technically, you are still paying tuition in the thousands that make the initial payment of applying seem like baby carrots.

@liveulife thanks for explaining everything in so much detail but is there way of getting fee waiverss from colleges? And if so is there anyy qualification criteria of who gets it or not?

Sent from my U20i using CC

@Liveulife: Thank you very much for the insight
I will definitely take a gap year if I do not get into a need blind college because there is no way I will pay 40k!

Damn. Nevertheless, its damn expensive anyway for a guy like me, who’s applying to just needblinds! :/

Liveulife, which uni are you attending now?

Also, Paayas: you need full financial aid as well? You looking at any Indian uni as backup? I can pay 40K per year- just like Liveulife.

Is there any other Indian here who need full aid? Coz I’m sure the aid asks for affects the chances, big time!

I can only pay about 35k per year. Liveulife is attending UVa.

Wait, are we talking in dollars?

^Umm, I think so. :p

trolled
Err, ok.
So I definitely can’t pay $35-40K.
=.=

Mrinal: about the essays.
Like am writing on one of the topics given in Pton supplement.
So, since Yale has an open topic, should I copy the same for that as well?
Suggest?

Thanks a lot liveulife. I had to pay around $160 for each of the AP tests I took…
