The Indian Thread #21

Texaspg,
I will have to instruct my GC ( as we don’t have one) regarding the whole process.
So, which report are you referring to?
School report (which just gives te school facts) or the recommendation letter?

rew - there is a counselor recommendation to be filed too.

https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/DownloadForms.aspx

https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/Docs/DownloadForms/2012/2012SchoolReport_download.pdf

If you look at the second link above, it has a section to be filled in about your rank and also how exactly they come up with it. As part of this recommendation, they also attach a school profile.

hey everyone! what is the final list of colleges where you will send your applications?

Thanks Texaspg :)

About the college list:
Mine will be:
Ivies- H Y P D C
Others- duke, WUSTL, WPI, Amherst, Williams, Vanderbilt and U of Virginia.
I might research more and splice/edit the list later after I take a counseling session.

I need help with that school report form Texaspg.
Like,
1-our schools doesn’t have any weighted or underweighted ranking. What do I ask the teacher to do? Leave them blank?

2-also, what is to be filled in-
Percentage of graduating class immediately attending: ______four-year two-year institutions

3- if our school doesn’t follow such stuff As- GPA cumulative, etc? Does the GC leave it blank?

4-what is to be filled in-
How do you report class rank? quartile _____________ quintile _____________ decile ______________

Ranking is not Weighted or Unweighted, it is GPA.
Are all your friends not attending college after 12th ends? It should be 100%
No, your GPA is weighted out of 100, put your percentage there.
If you are top 25%, then that’s first quartile. Decile is to 10%

@rew
with c you mean columbia or cornell?
and why not brown university?

hey guys, it would help alot if someone who applied in the last few years. can give a full detailed explanation regarding with how to send stuff in with common apps, transcripts, etc.

Thanks. :P

Weighted vs unweighted - High schools in US may assign a higher weight for PreAP and AP classes when determining the GPA. I don’t believe it is common in India and so you usually always have your GPA unweighted. Do not try to convert the GPA to a 4.0 scale from the 100 point basis.

If the school can give you a clear rank, such as 4/200, then that is your rank. Some schools refuse to rank the kids and so colleges are still trying to pin down the school by asking whether you might fall in a specific percentile (decile, quartile etc) to get some understanding of your performance within your school.

You don’t have to send anything if you can get your teachers and school to upload your recommendations, counselor report, school profile, and transcript. You will need to mail them individually to each school if this is possible for whatever reason. Our kid’s school and one teacher would not upload anything and so we had to provide them with addressed envelops with postage so they can mail them out.

Okay, so here’s how it is done. You can call it my guide >_>

Things you have to/can submit

[ul]
[li]Common App[/li]
[li]Education Interruption: Have you ever changed schools after 9th grade for any reason at all? Have you taken a gap year? Have you ever stopped going to school on a whim? If so, this is the place you get to upload a Microsoft Word file, preferably one page long, explaining why your high school education was interrupted. The official reasons that you can pick range from the extreme, “did not/will not graduate high school,” to the mellow, “did/will take time off.” So use this section if you have anything to explain regarding changes/shifts/absences. Also, don’t be shy. You can also detail how and to what extent these changes affected you and your life.[/li][li]Personal Essay: Nothing could be more self-explanatory. However, don’t waste time on CC trying to find the optimum font-size and font-face. Use size 12 Calibri and singleset lines. Singlesetting basically means that when you press enter, the word program should start with the next line itself and not leave a blank line in between. You’ll know what I mean when you do it. The essay section is where you can truly bare yourself to the adcoms. Remember, this is the only place where the adcoms can see first hand, you. All the other things, SAT scores from collegeboard, LORs from teachers, etc are second hand perspectives.[/li][li]Additional Information: For anything that you feel doesnt belong anywhere else in the application. Suppose you couldn’t lead any particular club in high school since you kept moving round the country. This is the place to explain that. Do not use this section for excuses. Complement your strengths by explaining your opportunities. Remember, the more you present, the more adcoms have to judge you by. This is offset-ed by the fact that you should choose to reveal information selectively and smartly. Some may also recommend this section to hold your ‘resume’. I advise against that. A resume, as helpful as it might be is a very rigid and clunky document for something as vibrant and modifiable as the common application. Again. You will be uploading a Microsoft Word Document here. [/li][/ul]
[li]University of California Application[/li][ul]
[li]Overview: A very simple application which makes your job much easier by leaving out those clogged uploading buttons. Everything can be entered in elements. It has the usual sections for general information, academics, extracurricular activities, essays and additional information. Note! The University of California doesn’t support submission of any kind of letters of recommendation from anyone. Also, from last year, UC Berkeley has removed the necessary condition of submitting Subject Test scores.[/li][li]Essays: The UC application has two essays with a total word limit of 1000 words which can be divided into any combination between the two essays. The admissions office doesn’t recommend any one essay to be below 400 words.[/li][/ul]
[li]Georgia Institute of Technology[/li][ul]
[li]Overview: The most confusing and worst formatted application I have ever seen. Enough said.[/li][/ul]
[li]** Massachusetts Institute of Technology**[/li][ul]
[li]Overview: I’ll bother with this later. Phew.[/li][/ul]
Things others have to/can submit

[ul]
[li]Common App[/li]
[li]School Forms: This can be divided into two parts. One, the Letters of Recommendation(LOR) and two, the Counselor’s Letter (CL). For both, go to “School Forms” and then choose “Invite Official.” Here, enter the email of your teacher who is recommending you or your school counselor. No matter if it is a personal email. If you are so paranoid, the college might even email the teacher to check or call. Authenticity. That’s the word. Any, once you do in fact invite them, they’ll be given instructions on how to upload the LOR or CL. You might want to tell them that it should be a word file with the specifications of size 12 calibri. Note! If you don’t have a school counselor, your school’s head/dean/vice-principal/principal/anyone with authority will do.[/li][/ul]
[li]Massachusetts Institute of Technology[/li][ul]
[li]Letter of Recommendation and Counselor’s Letter: Print em out. Let em be filled up. Get em faxed. OR Email the PDF files to your teachers. They’ll fill em up in Acrobat and email em back to the admissions office.[/li][/ul]
So there you go. All that there is to know. All that you will know in August and I don’t know why I typed it up. Sorry I rushed it up towards the end. I need to go swim.

Tizil7: Once again, I thank you.
I am not applying to MIT so my questions are all answered already.

Touch

^ Yes. And to be explained by your counselor (or equivalent) in the counselor’s letter (or equivalent).

Remember, it is your job to fully and clearly explain all parts of your application. It is best not to leave the adcoms assuming.

Hey, where do you draw the line between making excuses and actually stating what the situation was?
How do you make sure that the wrong idea is not accidentally conveyed?

After all the serious college discussions, here is my guide to approach college admissions.

Get a girl friend/boy friend
Go out with friends a lot
Party hard
Give SATs/ACT
Write all the essays a night before the app deadline
Wait for decision.

If anyone has any problems in following my guide, PM me !!

I second the effectiveness of Mrinal’s guide. It would look better though as:

[ul]
[li]GET A GIRLFRIEND / BOYFRIEND[/li][/ul]

You get the point. Just so this thread doesn’t get |/|0[) beamed, I’d take Mrinal’s advice and take it easy if I were applying.

I still don’t get the point of fretting over college decisions, just relax and give it your best shot !!

@Tiz: I would have done the same if I were not awake at 5.08 AM. But, never mind, you did it for me :D

Thanks Tizil, for the guide! So your counselor can include a letter about your schools grading systems and stuff too right? Is it advised to?

Hey, can someone answer Norths question?
I have the same doubt.

@mrinal
Tick the first four.
Wait for essays to come out.
Wait for decisions.

Repeat your guide.
