smartmind, I hope that I will be able to provide you with the information you are seeking. First, let me make it clear I am commenting on how Hopkins evaluates international students (non-US citizens, non-permanent residents). Every school does it differently and you should make note of that fact.

Yes, international applicants who apply to Hopkins are reviewed by Admissions and Financial Aid on a need-aware system. The best way I can explain this and answer your questions, is to take you through a step-by-step approach of our review process for international applicants.

(1) An international student’s application once complete is reviewed by the members of the Admissions Staff and a preliminary decision is rendered by the Admissions Committee. This decision will be based on the application materials alone and will have not be impacted by financial need or an applicant’s ability to pay.

(2) If the preliminary decision is admit, then the next step is to review the International Student Certificate of Finances which is a required form for all international applicants. If the numbers add up and the student and family can contribute completely (and there is no financial aid application) then the admit decision will stand.

(3) If based on the International Student Certificate of Finances and/or an application for Financial Aid has been completed and processed, then the admission decision will be reviewed with financial need taken into account.

(4) Near the end of the decision making process, the international students with preliminary decisions of admit & financial need will be re-reviewed for consideration of aid. As you correctly stated in your post, about 10% of international students at Hopkins will receive financial aid. This is a process overseen by both Admissions and Financial Aid counselors to determine which group of international applicants should receive aid packages. As you can imagine this is a very competitive process and numerous factors are taken into account.

(5) Once this review of which international students will receive aid is complete, the preliminary decisions are now changed to final decisions. Those receiving aid packages will remain as admit, whereas those not able to be funded will not be offered admission. We are not able to grant admission to an international student who can not offered the cost of Hopkins - so if an international applicant who has financial need will not be supplied with the proper funds we are unable to admit.

I hope that explains it a bit better. Let me adress two of your other questions…

This aid is not merit-based in that the money comes from the financial aid process. However, since the process is competitive in selecting with international students will receive aid, the merits of ones application is definitely taken into account. So though it resembles the merit review process, this is still considered financial aid.

And no, increasing the amount one can pay does not have a substantial impact on whether one will receive aid. The decisions of which international students to offer aid is based on which of the applicants the Admissions committee most wants to attract to attend Hopkins.

This is a difficult process and I hope my information has shed some new light on how we do things at Hopkins.

Cheers!

“hey havaldar whats your yahoo id”

Its like having deja vu…haven’t I mentioned this before? I don’t have a Yahoo email id.

Is anyone here applying to McGill University?

how do you guys keep in touch with adcoms after sending or application or even otherwise…

earlier at TIt… i think flamethrowers mentioned abt contacting them… says its helps a lot…

no it doesn’t help if u contact the admissions office. Coz every time a different person answers the question and there is no chance they will remember you. But if your luck is good u might get the same person to answer you but then its not necessary that that person will be the one to read your application.
Actually the personal relation thing is done by graduate students with professors coz in grad school if the prof says “admit him” the guy is in and if he says “reject him” then he’s out. And anyone who is denying what I said needs to get his data correct.
