The Indian Thread (TiT) # 14

whew…i dont post for a day and i had to read 3 full pages…
Anyways…Congrats Rushil…Arka got waitlisted at MIT…

And for MIT you’d want to do more research GB rather than awards…they like personal undertakings more…this is true for some others too…but then there is Caltech which really likes people who get olympiads and things…but then if u are not a geek you really dont wanna go caltech way…out…

Catch 22.

One would want to go to MIT or other such school precisely because he/she does not currently have the resources to pursue “research” and related hi-fi things. I mean, I did no lab, no money “research” in my bedroom, and could have gotten really far if I had a little more encouragement (“WHAT are you doing at the computer now? Go down and study!”), time and resources - all of which MIT can provide.

Do universities want someone who did some high-profile research under guidance of a berkeley professor? Or someone who is naively re-inventing stuff in his bedroom?

I think the latter…

well merc… What you said was in part very true… and relates to many of us… ( at least me in full when u say about time spent on computers being thought of as time wasted and spent in casual masti)… In fact it was not until the computer time translated into some awards via global competitions and stuff that they realised it was worth it…

As of MIT wanting hi-fi research already… my take is a little different…For someone oriented towards pursuing a research based future and innovative thinkin MIT is the mecca of guidance and success… But well to prove your worth today and show the so called PASSION… one has to gives substantiated evidence in this regard… When colleges state that they want to see their students take the best of prevailing opportunity they do mean it also… When MIT ppl know that even at sub UG level in Indian Schools, you can make it and get some small amount of research , they would definitely want it there…Its not that the research compensates or even partly replaces the work you do at MIT . Instead it would be a sort off guiding light and preorientation for you to get your success in researching later…

the situation to see is best replicated in Indian IIT system itself … where the famous quote goes…
IIT 1st year freshman who clear the IITJEE are half engineers already…

Hope all my statements and views make sense… but if you come to think of it… its not applicable to all… only since MIT takes in lesser than 10 ppl from India that makes it seek the super best ones … who are as equally said Half MITians already in their truest context of place…

SM

Yes SM, quite correct. However, my point was more subtle. Of course pursuing “real” research is a great achievement, but some people just do stuff independently (for various reasons). They might not be at the cutting edge, but they ARE just as passionate about it, if not more than, those kids who are able to find real research positions and such stuff.

For example, in my CS class professor was teaching about string codes and this guy from Romania comes up with a nice suggestion to encode bits without any delimiters. Professor says -

Get my point? He probably didn’t have exposure to rice coding before, but he DID come up with it on his own. Is he any less brilliant than somene who is researching a new turbo coding method already because he happens to have gotten a research position under a professor involved in it?

Anyway… I guess I’m only creating more fuss about this :stuck_out_tongue: Peace.

you are not creating fuss over anything… infact this happens to be the leading debate among multilevel universities… also… whether to have cutthroat competition and take the cream of crop who already have half amazing qualities or take take in real raw talent and sort off enhance their credibility…

And well… for the student who rediscovers anything , the joy ain’t less, but the achievement is not counted for that’s the irony of this world.
yet somewhere these colleges are trying to get these raw talents who have the equal passion but less opportunity … ( that’s why goes the phrase… Relative Demonstrated passion …or passion demonstrated within the realms of practically possible space …)
Though well i have to more than agree when you say or mean to say they are nothing more than unsuccessful in acquiring these raw talents…

I am yet to see them recognize one applicant on the basis of EXPECTED POTENTIAL … or demonstrated passion beyond their preset high-class definition…But that is partly due to the fact that these raw passion as i call go highly unnoticed also and to fish them out is nearly impossible…

yet sum-where the need of the hour and peer level competition has increased so much and one cannot help but feel the urge to demonstrate and prove out his talents … and with leeser opportunities which are beyond our control… we may only be left Loosing this big battle…

And well… the thoughts are as intriguing as ever … as said rightly… more fuss lies ahead…

SM
