Don’t panic! When you get your I-20, call the consulate and tell them that you’re a student, that all the online dates have been taken and that you need an emergency appointment. They should give you a date/recommend you to the requisite agency which will tell you how to proceed. There’s no need to worry about getting appointments since they always have some slots open for student applicants around that time

wow…4 pages in a day…awesome…

Thanks for the info Sucharita…that takes some tension off…

thanks for the info . . i shall be needing it soon . hopefully ;)

rishabh, its you cant drive if its above 0.08 (i have no idea if there are different ways of measuring BAC “blood alcohol content” in different countries, but the number is 0.8 here) 2.1 would have you dead about 4 times over.

no ! but thats not possible . . cuz onve my cousins had it at 2.3 once . i remember :p

oh sorry ! i meant .23 not 2.3 . . . forgot to shift the decimal ! my bad

.23 is just about 3 times the legal limit. You could still drive, but you’d crash and it would be illegal.

right . . thats correct. i didn’t know the legal limit. i just thought it would be .21 (which i was typing as 2.1 :p)

its all good

so, have you ever driven with a BAC above .08 ??

No. Life is a good thing, and a DUI is a terrible thing. Those two things are good reasons not to drink and drive.

dont really know how to do a thumbs up smiley in here . .

so ill just go with thumbs up

guys i have something to ask…see now in the US it is said that we people with an F1 can work 20hrs during termtime…
Now my question is that say if we develop software from home and sell them…would that be considered as the 20hr work…because for 1 no one is paying us…we are not displacing american workers…soo any ideas/thoughts on that…

do i have some sort of repelling curse on me…every damn time i come online…everyone else goes offline…whats up with that…

its got to do with ur name ‘vampiro’

we think ur going to suck the life blood out of us by piercing our necks with ur fangs

haha…but well i cant do that online…

abt the question…i can give you the convo between me and merc…and then you guys share your point of views on the matter…

MercurySquad: answer to your question -
MercurySquad: it is called an “independent contract work permit”
MercurySquad: it differs from country to country
shikhar2002in: okay
shikhar2002in: think it would be possible to get one
shikhar2002in: while studying there
MercurySquad: i’m not sure, you should check the F-1 and H1-B regulations on the us.gov website
shikhar2002in: and what if i dont sell anything there
shikhar2002in: keep all clients from outside USA
MercurySquad: lol
MercurySquad: those are fine points… i think in any case, you will be “working” x hours/week AND also making money
shikhar2002in: yeah
shikhar2002in: well anyways
shikhar2002in: ok another question
shikhar2002in: u know google right
shikhar2002in: ok say first
MercurySquad: but i think if the person paying you is not an american then it’s ok
shikhar2002in: yeah
shikhar2002in: now
shikhar2002in: u know google right
shikhar2002in: the way they did things
shikhar2002in: now seee
shikhar2002in: is a student allowed to
shikhar2002in: u know carry on with a project
shikhar2002in: and contact venture capitalists
shikhar2002in: so that he can go on and about being an entrepreneur
shikhar2002in: would that be considered “work”
shikhar2002in: and moreso if it sells…like becomes really big it wont be called “work”
shikhar2002in: right
shikhar2002in: i mean nothing illegal i spose
shikhar2002in: your views
MercurySquad: um i must say i’m not knowledgeable in this area… i only know one thing that there is such a permit called independent work permit or something which has different rules in different countries
shikhar2002in: okay
shikhar2002in: but then
shikhar2002in: it would be ok i think
shikhar2002in: since sabeer bhatia
shikhar2002in: was an intl
shikhar2002in: and he made some stuff
MercurySquad: maybe he stuck to the 20hr/week limit ?
MercurySquad: OR maybe,
MercurySquad: he managed to have only 20 hr/week as the official (in papers)
shikhar2002in: but dude i dont get the point
shikhar2002in: i mean if i am sitting on my bum
shikhar2002in: just screwing around with my computer
shikhar2002in: and doing it as a college project
shikhar2002in: how the **** can it be counted as work
shikhar2002in: its not right
MercurySquad: hahahah… that is something i also thought about when i read about the work restrictions, several years ago
MercurySquad: well, the thing is,
MercurySquad: here no employer pays you without a tax card,
MercurySquad: and a record is kept of when you worked and how much you were paid
MercurySquad: so if you make a lot of money doing something else, like contract work,
MercurySquad: whoever pays you has to enter that in your tax card
MercurySquad: you might say you only worked 2 hours or whatever,
MercurySquad: in which case the court will decide
shikhar2002in: okie
shikhar2002in: the court
shikhar2002in: ahem
shikhar2002in: why
shikhar2002in: i mean i just say i worked for 10hrs
shikhar2002in: making something
shikhar2002in: and got paid
shikhar2002in: thats it
MercurySquad: well you earn 2 million dollars for 2 hours of work
shikhar2002in: end of story
shikhar2002in: yeah
shikhar2002in: i get your point
MercurySquad: if it’s anything more than the average of say, 15 dollars / hour
MercurySquad: then it’s gonna raise eyebrows
shikhar2002in: yeah
shikhar2002in: but if it took like 6months to finish
shikhar2002in: then
shikhar2002in: i can prove that i worked just 10hrs each week
shikhar2002in: and did that
MercurySquad: yeah and the employer has to vouch that he paid you 50,000 $ / hour
shikhar2002in: i mean making google did not take page and brin 6months
MercurySquad: or similar
shikhar2002in: but they made billions
shikhar2002in: …
MercurySquad: well there are always problems near the boundary conditions
MercurySquad: you can just say that,
MercurySquad: you found a job which pays you 1000$/hour
MercurySquad: end of story
shikhar2002in: yeah
shikhar2002in: haha
shikhar2002in: well i got your point
shikhar2002in: basically we are here talking abt
shikhar2002in: getting paid
shikhar2002in: right
shikhar2002in: if something is your own undertaking
shikhar2002in: sort of a business
shikhar2002in: things might be different
shikhar2002in: for which we would need
shikhar2002in: that
shikhar2002in: independent thingy
shikhar2002in: u mentioned
MercurySquad: yeah it’s not clear if something you built in your free time sells for $$ then whether it would be classified as work or not
MercurySquad: i think it’s an interesting question which only the US Immigration can answer
shikhar2002in: yep
shikhar2002in: and well
shikhar2002in: if they fail to answer
shikhar2002in: if this is something real good
shikhar2002in: then obviously one can hire a damn good lawyer
shikhar2002in: with that money
MercurySquad: lmao
shikhar2002in: who can easily find a lot of flaws
shikhar2002in: in the
shikhar2002in: description set by F1 visa
shikhar2002in: haha
shikhar2002in: i mean if i could spot it
shikhar2002in: u could spot it
shikhar2002in: a lawyer can easily spot it

ok…i thought this would be a nice topic to discuss abt:

Does the average US citizen like the idea of int’ls studying at their universities???

some qoutes from some forums here at CC:

“I couldn’t beleive that all my donations were going towards int’ls and alcoholics!!!” — Parent’s cafe

“My son got rejected even after me giving all my taxes and money for a bunch of int’ls” — Legacy thread

and many more…

ur views???

dude those views aren’t really something surprising…because in every country you;d find people who like the idea…and people who dont like the idea…so cant really comment whether they like us being there or whether they dont like us being there…
for instance when my uncle went for his studies to UMich…he met guys who called indians PIGS (poor indian graduate sons)…and he met people who were downright wonderful and who gave him support with everything…

anybody got any ideas regarding what i posted some posts above…I for one feel that it is an important question atleast for people who are going there with finaid…
