The Indian Thread (TiT) # 14

LOL I don’t think all caps or otherwise will make a difference.

If I will ask for fee waiver to an institute which does not has a financial need blind admission policy for International Students, wont’ my chance of getting admission there be affected?
Does anyone know a person here on TiT who has got admitted in a top US University after dropping a year?

no hard feelings vampiro.

anyways…anyone else applyin for nxt yr here from delhi???

ronty, i am in nus…but since i gave Alevels in s’pore,my system is a bit diff…however there are many ppl from india in nus [n ntu n smu]…
do apply if u want to…

Thank you Neha for ur reply… Do u know whether NUS will consider an Indian student’s SAT I and SAT II scores for admission decision, if that student hasn’t done very well in class XII exams from CBSE? I got 88.2% in 10th from ICSE but only 75.25% in 12th from CBSE. So, will I have a chance if I score well in the SAT tests…

and congrats Neha for getting admission in such a reputed University!!

Whats ur subject there?

600m Asian kids lack access to basic needs, says report

Bangkok (Thailand): Nearly half of Asia’s 1.27 billion children live in poverty—deprived of food, safe drinking water, health or shelter, a development agency said in a report released on Monday. While 600 million children under the age of 18 lack access to one of these basic human needs, more than 350 million are deprived of two or more of these needs, said ‘Growing up in Asia’, a report from the child humanitarian organisation Plan.
Plan said half of Asia’s families are not benefiting from economic growth and globalisation. It blamed the pressure of rapid population growth on scarce resources; lack of access to education, healthcare, clean water and sanitation; caste discrimination; and weak governance and corruption.
“Asia has more than twice as many severely deprived children as sub-Saharan Africa. This scale of child poverty will have a serious impact on Asia’s future prospects, unless it is addressed now,’’ Michael Diamond, Plan’s Asia regional director, said in a release.
The report said that to combat poverty, the international community needs to reduce subsidies given to US, European and Japanese farmers and forgive billions of dollars in debt. It also said richer countries could help by paying more for the goods they buy from developing countries. Plan has pledged to invest $1 billion on poverty reduction across 12 Asian countries over the next decade.

ok… what if you ask for fee waivers and then say you are willing to contribute like $10,000 per year towards college fees. though $50 may seem less against that amount, when you are applying to 10-12 colleges, it can go up to $500 which is quite a significant amount…
wut d’u think?

Aaron, I was also thinking about that same point… Wont it affect the students chance of getting admission, if he asks for app. fee waiver?
Is it good to apply to Stanford for Early Decision with SAT I and TOEFL scores only ??? Which is the best BET univ. , which provides financial aid, to apply in ED? I mean those which accepts more International Students with AID.

I dont think so it affects… i had explicitly emailed a few top notch colleges … the fee waiver part is just the initial thing and if it is accepted … it draws no more of a attention… however having to contribute more than $15000per year with it could affect not a $10000. In fact for univs with feewaiver policy, ,specific solid reasons for waiver should be stated. If gud reason is there no prob will be there with waiver.

By the way i am a new member on the forum…but have done the research work … am in final stages of appliucations… i hav 1 quick question…

What are the stuff we need to get stamped and attested by school. Do recs also need ot be stamped by school. If we apply to more than 7 (usual no.) how do we get all the hundreds of documents stamped and signed… schools wont stamp on all . any alternative…

Please reply on these one… especially all who have already done this in pre years… your suggestions and what you did…

:)   Ankur    :)

Also …i forgot to ask… for university that gives finaid… do we need to apply seperately. Where do we fill in the supplemental finaid info… any seprate thing. Do we need to give the ifafsa now… colleges say that they need financial docs only at time of issuing visa docs…afetr admission… so can i send them afetr wards…
How do they adcoms make their decisions pertaining to finaid and amount… without thses forms…

Senior experianced members are expected to comment on these as i feel this is one topic discussed not so explicitly …please

:) :)  Ankur  :) :)

umm first of all if your school is need blind for internationals students u need to fill out the ifafsa form after you get your acceptance . They recieve your forms calculate your “need” and send it back so that u send the proof of finances form to them ( for the I20 ) . Other schools make it neccessary for you to send those forms along with your regular application ( income tax copies, bank statements and the works ) . Everything is stated in the international website of the schools you are applying to.

How do we send the applications and School Stuff… By courier or what… how much does this cost in total…

I sent everything by regular mail but you can send stuff by speedpost/DHL if you’re worried about stuff getting lost (none of my things did though)

Speedpost is generally Rs 450 and DHL is Rs 850 if you ask for a student discount.

Will Stanford considers November SAT II Scores for its early decision applicants?

“Do recs also need ot be stamped by school.”
No. It’s not needed.

“do we need to apply seperately (for finaid).”
Yes.
Usually NOT alongwith with your admission application.

.

Ronty about your stanford question - check the school website!! School acceptance policies for SAT scores would vary and it makes it a lot easier just to check each school’s website to find out what their policy is.
