first of all let me tell.you i have the latest stats and the ones u said are wrong…
next …IITJEE has a total of 4000 seats to be offered … Being the best institute ever it needs the best students …

Even if One goes by your stats… there are 6000 ppl who do get 1st division. … and they are brilliant…so they deserve to be at IIT more if they clear IITJEE…then its like IITJEE cleared + 60% plus in Bihar Boards… excellent

Let me giv u an example prob. u will understand better.
MIT for instance takes about 15-20 students from India each year for undergrads… Now it is very diff… to get a 1500+ in sat and a amazing EC list and a High school rank of within top 5% and board mark above 80% …taking probability here it comes down to 15 in about 2000 who apply and 15 in about the whole population total…

Not even 0.01 % of Indian Student Population abroad

Now Bihar intermediate …6000/80000 = 7.5 % …what more do u need…

why shud they take ppl with les % when they can have all best for 4000 seats…as for other boards…they may have a little advantage here but overall they too clear the Main exam.

And at the present system.if you study well for bihar boards.harder supposedly. u will face ease at prep for IITJEE as it will be objective… more board syllabus like

And if u want to know about avg. bihari kids who crack IITJEE, u should check that with an IITian himself. Most of the students in Kota r from Bihar and UP. And this yr, Kota alone accounted for 40% of the JEE qualifiers(according to AAJTAK).

by making 60% the eligibility criteria for IITJEE takers, the govt. will be depriving many GOOD students of UP and Bihar, of a lifetime opportunity.
Its very easy to get 60% in ICSE, CBSE and many other State boards like that of Karnataka, where most of the students score above 80%.
The best way is to ‘normalise’ the marks of different boards, which BITS Pilani used to do earlier. Like this, everyone will be given a fair opportunity.

* ~smartmind: “MIT for instance takes about 15-20 students from India each year for undergrads.” *

Wrong statistics, I believe.
MIT admitted 4 (or 5) students from India this year, that is 2005, for the batch of 2009.
I don’t know the number of Indian (or International) students waitlisted by MIT, except one case from India, because MIT rarely ever waitlists internationals according what I came to know from the Admission Council of MIT.

I think that MercurySquad can give the exact figure of Admits from India. But, the net admission figure of MIT from India will be less than or equal to 5.

(PS : I was the one who was waitlisted from India! )

For MIT the figure was 12 only… i typed it wrong… and regarding the stats … the figure cannot go down like that in 2 yr…i will get u the latest stats… within a day or two…

The figures are always exagerated by the media… i know it up close and perssonal… that the fig is less but why they be deprived of their brilliance… Maybe certain students can have the talent with less than 60 % marks…but the ones with more than 60% definetely are better… If IIt had only been filled by Bihar students also… the 60% rule would not have had diminished quality… 4000 is still less than 6000… why would they take the ones with less than 60% why shud they…

And i think we are headed for a debate here without any reason whatsoever.let us wait and see and quit the topic…

u r almost right that ppl with more than 60% r most of the times academically better than those with 60% or less. But my dear friend, score of 60% is not uniform in different boards. So, the best thing is 60% Normalised.

it looks like the iit board and the mhrd seem to know what they’re doing. personally, i feel it would have been better if they had done this a while ago, but better late than never, eh?

that said, i think the next one or two batches at the iits will be better than the current ones, on the whole. that is the time i think it’ll take the coaching centres to get comfy in their new niche. then things will go back to normal.

EDIT : and yeah 60% normalized is better. i’d say make it 70 or 75 even. but the normalization is important

i doubt that, bcoz mit has total of 15 indians in undergrad, checked it on mit website, but i would like to see the link if possible, my interviewer also told me that its 3-4 from india.

Ronty here’s the CC rule: IF YOU HAVE A LINK< YOU ALWAYS POST IT WITH THE MESSAGE. Ok

And all of you understand this:
The IIT is a separate body which can make their own rules as and when they want. So if Bihar or UP board does not give “marks” to its students it’s not IIT’s fault. The boards have to realise that their students will be at harm with the poorish marking. The IIT’s have every right to make any rule they see fit for the development of their institute.

But as all of us are goin to US so hell with it.

P.S. Ronty I too seriously doubt the genuinity of the link coz I have also been told by Ben Jones and Matt McGann at their respective blogs that they take abt 4-5 people for MIT.

hey guys…
