The Indian Thread (TiT) # 15

Speaking of dead threads. :)

Yesterday’s Daily Round-Up: 361 posts!!!

Fantastic about Cornell? The Food! (And the campus is said to be beautiful)

That said, what major Badman? What lifestyle. What study habits. What dyou want from your college. What social scene…

All of these + which college you feel a connection to should decide your choice.

Though of course, as a person stuck between 4 colleges, I really have no right to comment. :D

What do you want to major in? For me, that would be of the highest concern as the universities are all at par.(Maybe the ivy’s have a little bit more prestige)

Cornell and Chicago have really bad weather. The happiness of students at Cornell has also always been in question.

I would like to study Philosophy and Physics at college.
Social scene - I’m not too big on the whole partying thing. I mean, I enjoy a party once a month or so but not everyday. I’d like a place where people are friendly and open-minded. Somewhere I can make good friends but also engage in stimulating discussions with lots of people.
I would really like to be able to foster good relationships with my professors and try doing a bit of research (to see if I like it and would maybe like to continue with it).

The thing is - Brown and Chicago were both colleges I felt a huge connection with (thats why this decision is really tough). I guess in the end it comes down to whether or not I want a huge core curriculum.
Gut instinct tells me to go with Brown’s open curriculum, but I can’t help but wonder if the core maybe a great option…

If you guys are familiar with Brown and Chicago, you’ll know that both of them have something peculiar about them that doesn’t attract everyone, something quirky that i just can’t put my finger on

I’d go with Brown. I’ve always been in favour of open curriculum. :p

I’ve been to the Chicago campus and it is great. Though the location is a bit shaddy (i.e. predominantly black neighbourhood)…the campus was friendly and the atmosphere was great.

I know what you mean badman. Almost exactly what you mean. (Though I’d prefer one party a year instead of a month, and that party would be a collection of people discussing Douglas Adams. :D)

I’d say Chicago over Brown, but that’s a personal decision, which is in part because of the unrequited nature of my relationship with Chicago. (If only they had an engineering school, if only…)

In case of both Philosophy and Physics, U of C is superior to Brown and Cornell. I would have chosen U of C.

Like you said earlier, in the end, it comes down to open curriculum Vs core curriculum. I’d choose the former. :D

Abhi / Shrivats

Don’t you think the huge core would be quite stifling?

And I’d choose the latter. Although I recently read a post on CC that mentioned a course at U of C that used Quantum Mechanics to analyse socio-economic dymanics and as that combines Philosophy (just a little) and Physics :D, U of C could be the place for you! Disclaimer: This post is slightly farcical, but true

@badman89: I’ve heard that Brown has the happiest students. And not because they get to party every night, but because of the reasons you just mentioned a couple of posts ago.

Shri’s two cents: Any college that has Zen statements for an essay topic ought to be pretty good at philosophy!

you thread killer!

Apropos of nothing. I’ve just managed to wreck my computer’s theme, destroying the perfectly balanced system I had in place for years. Any suggestions on good themes/sites? (XP)

Is it just me or has K’s post formats become weird?

Hey Shrivats.

Lol, my favorite theme is either Win XP Silver or Win Classic ;)

but i fyou want ot try out some rad designs, check out Litestep: http://www.litestep.net.

You have to register, and the program is a bit touchy, (at least it was when I tried it out a year ago  ) but some of the designs are amazing. It completely changes your desktop, not just a theme. And if you want, you can always revert to Win theme by a shortcut.

ok then…I killed the thread…

but inshallah killed it before me (actually, seeing as I posted, he put it in hibernation, or rather, aestivation  )

Comment on the Indian Boy Genius (yes, gratituous capitalisation in order to be silly) thing – uh, that’s farcical. Totally. A ‘lepton’ is anything belongs to a class of light subatomic particles – for example, an electron is one. I’m fairly certain they don’t travel faster than light. :p

/physics-major-ness (I want to do particle!)
