The official Pakistani Thread for the class of 2013

My 2 cents

@the Game: Congrats! :slight_smile: always good to have a shoulder to cry on (my mom was outside praying for me)
@Vrohra and Prospectus786: I interviewed candidates for Princeton this year and honestly, the school you attend doesn’t matter! If you go to an average school and do really well, it’s better than going to an elite school and being average. They’re looking for middle-class, down-to-earth people who will take advantage of the opportunities offered at Ivy League schools and bring an “authentic” Pakistani perspective to the table. KGS people are great (brilliant, highly accomplished, well-exposed) but they’re more western than Pakistani (some, not all). The kids I interviewed were absolutely amazing and they’ll make it big no matter what since they’re already part of an elite network. I thought Aitchison boys were more grounded and more in touch with their culture/roots :)

I agree with ForbesPaki…

@ theGame: Yup I’ll pm you as soon as i send in da deposit, by da way how does da deposit have to be paid?? =s

@Vrohra:
When I was applying to US/UK unis, I so badly wished I had picked a different subject combination. From my experience, if you are planning on applying to UK unis only, then DONT do business studies (BS). For my LSE offer in the Mathematics and Economics course, the LSE ppl wont be counting my grade in BS AND Eco. So if you are planning on doing something in economics you might want to consider that they sometimes don’t count your A-Level economics grade as it covers the same material as their cousre. And as far as I know, UK unis dont offer any advanced credit or anything like that for stuff you have already done- they just make you do it again.

For US unis, I made the bad mistake of dropping GP. If you are good at English, then GP is just another easy A to add to your AS grades. But most importantly, for US unis, go out and participate in ECs!

And to add to what Flibb said, theres this school called Beaconlite which also does Edexcel, but not sure if you would want to go there compared to KGS or Pats.

Help me out people, if you have any info…

@nrmncpr, so where do you plan on going?

Ok guys… I would just like to share some info about visa thingy. Basically, this is what one of my friend told me and I am quite assured that this is detail from an authentic source for me. Below is a copy of a message that one of my friend sent me.

He said:
My senior(who is in LUMS SSE this year) was admitted to colgate uni USA…in his visa interview, he was asked all types of questions regarding colgate asking him:

–>what is colgate, we never heard of it?
–>Why colgate and not any other good pakistani uni. are u selecting it only to escape pakistan and corrupt usa?
–>they also question ur aid package and try to dissuade the applicant if the (total expenses - aid) > $4000. So be prepared to demonstrate ur additional scholarship sources if you are aid deficit.

This guy had aid of $44000 and colgate’s fee for was $49500, … he was told on spot that he cannot be given a visa.

A student three years senior had offers from both Stanford and Princeton and he decided to go to stanford…Only question he was asked was:

–>Why stanford and not princeton?
his answer: I love the weather at stanford.

his visa was issued on spot. This was in 2006.

The colgate one, MindHunter, is the same one in the year book with all those distinctions? God, this is bad!

@ Flibb
no boi… this is some other guy. The guy in year buk is currently studying at tufts.

For the benefit of all, here is the list of LSE’s non-preferred subjects:

* Accounting

 • Art and Design
 • Business Studies
 • Communication Studies
 • Design and Technology
 • Drama/Theatre Studies^
 • Home Economics
 • Information and Communication Technology
 • Law
 • Media Studies
 • Music Technology
 • Sports Studies
 • Travel and Tourism

^A number of departments regard Drama/Theatre Studies as a ‘generally preferred subject’

For further info, click [How to apply - Undergraduate Prospectus - Programmes and courses - LSE](http://www.lse.ac.uk/resources/undergraduateProspectus2009/howToApply.htm)

I was only asked two questions, to which I answered as follows:

1. Why did you choose this college?
Ans: Bcoz it is one of the rare colleges that gives aid in ED to international students

2. Where do you want to work after graduation?
Ans: Public sector of Pakistan, preferably State Bank

So I guess it varies from person to person, depending on how well you filled your app forms and answered your Qs.

@ForbesPaki: Thanks yaar!

@free: Can be paid through credit card. Remember to request the $500 to be reduced to $50 owing to your financial situation (show your FA package as prove).

@joiya550 If I make the offer, I’ll go to LSE. If I don’t, then McGill. Although I got into both UCLA and Berkeley, they are not as affordable for me now as they were when I was applying, unfortunately :frowning:
What about you? Where are you headed to?

^ Ok thanks, will do!
And heyy…the colgate guy story is…scary.
gulps
Honestly i dont even know what i want to do after i graduate and all that…seriously im not even sure about my majors(eco probably but im open to ideas and suggestions). doesnt this make answerin da visa questions for me prety difficult…woaahh…
what should i say i wana work as when i graduate?? seriously i know i must be sounding xtremely dumb but i dunno wot i want to work as reallyy…

NIce thx shahwaiz69 but can u post ur entire stats list from the time u were applying…it owuld be much appreciated. Also, is there anyone else who got into an ivy on the pakistani forum???

@free: Say what I said (“public sector”) or try a major bank like Citibank. Parents usually have a strong sense of what their daughters should study, so I guess you should talk to your parents.
