The official Pakistani Thread for the class of 2013

I took the TOEFL test! Had a decent score 108/120 (IBT) Anyone else?

wow congrats talha man!

Heard IELTS is easier to score on. Ask Mac if they accept it so that you can have a good shot at the adcoms if you choose to take an English Proficiency test.

@ flibb, thanks.

TOEFL is really easy! Everyone scores 100+. I haven’t heard of anyone who scored below that! My friend took the test without studying a single word and scored 104. Its the Speaking & Writing that people generally score less in. (You speak in a mic, and TYPE in the essay)

Ok, now everyone’s going to consider me really dumb, I’m taking the IELTS as well. =/ … 21st Feb.

You’re not dumb. You’re very dumb - which is not the same :)

Ok …
Anyone applying to Trinity University?

@ The Game : I said ā€œreally dumbā€ … its the same thing! DUHHH! :P

@ Kaprov : A girl from my school. =/ Why?

I took the TOEFL, got 116/120. Swarthmore asks for it as does UChicago. I was also told that it also helps with the student visa. And yeah, I am planning on taking the IELTS as well as it is a requirement for getting an Australian student visa.

You ma man, nrmncpr! :D

UChicago asks for the toefl? Doesn’t it waive it based on the kind of school you studied in etc?

It is not an absolute requirement but it is recommended. In fact I had done the TOEFL just for UChicago and Swarthmore. It was three hours of misery so I hope it does give me an edge. BTW those are some nice scores you have free.

JAn SAT results have come fellas. How did it go?

not so good from my school. No one got above 2000 from what I have heard so far. Kids with 5 As at AS ended up with 1700s and 1600s

Hey everyone. I was just wondering what happens if you didn’t take any Science subjects in O/A levels. I know most colleges require or recommend a certain number of years of Science/Science Lab. If I’m not up to par does that only leave me with colleges that have open admissions?

Some colleges do insist that you have studied in school atleast two years of physics, science, one year of lab. The usual academic jargon. But it varies greatly and the requirements are very broad. and not intransigently applied. You must have taken Maths in O levels. and if you took it in A Levels too, then thats something.

And anyway thats the point of A-Levels, you are expected to specialize in 3 subjects. There isnt much room for covering sciences- not if u dont mean to pursue them in college.
Is there a specific college you wanna know about?

No I don’t exactly have any specific colleges in mind. It’s more like thinking out loud, trying to see if I have a shot at getting accepted anywhere. I don’t really want to get ahead of myself. I was searching some colleges a friend of mine is trying for and I saw that they all require/recommend 2-4 years of Science and Lab and I have nil of both. So if I applied to one of these colleges, I could still be accepted? How can that be? I mean they don’t just say that they need 4 years of science for kicks! It has to affect your chances of getting in, right?
Personally, I studied Math, Accounting, English, Islamiat, Pak Studies and Computer Sciences in O levels. I’m planning on taking Math, Accounting and Economics in A levels in May.

there you go three years of computing should count for something. Yes it could affect your chances but most colleges are aware of the trends in different academic systems and review the application accordingly.
And i think that the exact wording is often more along the lines of we recommend …
Anyway there are a lot of LACs very lax about such things, you can try them.

I didn’t know Computers qualified. I was thinking along the lines of Chem, Bio and Physics. Well, that does make me feel a little better. Thanks!

It has lab. hasnt it. As a matter of fact, i needed a rec from a science teacher and i sent one from my computing teacher. None of my colleges have objected so far. it is just an ontheline kind of thing.
