Someone earlier asked in the thread about how many Pak students apply to US…well just heard an interview of Hussain Haqqani…According to him currently 5250 Pakistani students are studying in univz in US compared to 100000 of India and 98000 of China…Ofcourse these figures include both under and post grad…

983…!!

The number for postgrads are likely to be greater due to more scholarship opportunities and higher acceptance rates of graduate schools. More than 200 people go to US every year on Full Bright Scholarship alone.

As far as the comparison with other countries, Pakistan is way behind. That, to an extent, is a reflection of our country’s overall situation. But there is a room for improvement. Particularly when there is a decline in the trend of “going abroad” to study India and China. Universities will look, or are, looking for new markets.

But the biggest hurdle I feel is our education system. The O/A levels system is available to a selected few and, particularly O Levels, is obsolete. We need to develop a sound and recognized education system of our own if we want to succeed as a nation.

How many of u here are waiting for 1st April(practically 2nd April)??? and which Ivies u v applied too?

I am not going to see the only decision left…had enough of rejections…so in no mood to read another rejection letter…:D

What do u think u should reply when college says in a Rejection letter…

“If u want a hard copy of the decision,e-mail at the following address…”

Can’t get more humiliating than that!!!..:)

990!!!

Samtjt, always ask for the rejection letter. It makes them waste money, so you’ll be like “HA, IN YOUR FACE B****!”

That’s not very nice, Inert.

Well it wasn’t very nice of them to reject me either.

Hahahaha!!! Exactly…

Let’s start a little discussion here that will hopefully take up all our time until April 1.

Don’t you think it’s annoying as hell when people on CC talk about how colleges need to ‘fit’ your ‘personality’, and that every college needs to have the right ‘feel’ for you to be happy there? That’s bs. If I’m getting an awesome education, I don’t care if I’m in the city, in the suburbs, in freezing cold or on sunny beaches, because none of that stuff really matters to me.

These nakhras are only fit for the locals. The rest should just go because whatever they get, it would definitely be better than what they would get in Pakistan.

Well I guess those factors could be useful to decide which uni to go to if you have multiple offers from universities of the same rank and repute. But of course what ultimately matters is the education you get.

How about a discussion on what we can do to solve Pakistan’s education problem? Where does everybody think the root of our educational problems lies?

Well at the moment the government does not seem to have the money to finance education on a large level, especially when it comes to lower level public schools. This discussion could potentially lead to a larger debate on the country’s abysmal level of corruption and it’s current economic strength, since that has everything to do with the standard of our education.

What baffles me is that Bangladesh has such a high literacy rate (around 96 percent) while we are far below that line. Now I don’t consider banglasesh to be one of the wealthiest countries in the world, so maybe we should look into that. I don’t know enough about this topic to go any further than I already have.

It doesn’t take a Sherlock Holmes-like mind to point out that Pakistan is rife with problems, with heart- and gut-wrenching troubles. The truth is that it takes a visionary to look for solutions, to pinpoint solutions and to set work on these solutions in motion. Pakistan has innumerable problems - so many that it’d take me a whole day to list all of them. And yet, on the other hand, we have immense potential too. Where we have lacked over our brief 60-odd years of history is leadership. We need somebody who can grab our country by the scruff of the neck and take it places we currently only dream of. It’s up to people like us, who have the luxuries and opportunities God has blessed us with to provide this leadership. It is a long-term process, no doubt, but it has to start somewhere, with someone. And if you think one man can’t make a difference, look at countries where dictators have single-handedly turned situations around (i.e. Singapore) - one man (or woman for that matter) can certainly make a difference.
