personally I oppose this way of thinking that if one hasnt heard about a college then it must not be any good. If you could take the time out and google it you’d find out its actually a very good college, and whether or not youve never heard of it doesnt make the smallest difference in the world.

@joiya550: If i think this way, even if i had gotten into Princeton/Dartmouth/Brown, my parents would not have permitted to go to US. Here in Sialkot, few (if any) people know abt US unis beyond Harvard and to an extent Yale. I have planned to reapply next year so Bryn Mawr is the best option.

Thanks for your input though.

P.S: I am Uni of Michigan’s waitlist as well.

Please don’t make your decision based on whether or not you have heard of a place. Bryn Mawr is an amazing school, and the campus is stunning. I’m sure LUMS is great, but an education from Bryn Mawr, though more expensive, will certainly shape you more completely as in individual.

@Intert101: Agreed.

Anyone here going to WashU or UVa? I’m trying to decide between the two - UVa seems to have more Pakistanis but they seem self-segregated whereas WashU seems to have…none.

@Crozet: If I were you, I’d see where there are more Muslims, and hence easily available Halal food. Number of Pakistanis should not be an option. For one, most of them there would be white washed, and two, if they are important, why even leave Pakistan? :)

@talal: thanks for the response. Sorry about that, I was using Pakistanis and Muslims interchangeably. “Halal food” is unavailable at both though WashU seems to call it’s Kosher food “Kosher/Halal” but then again, the Muslim Student Association at WashU seemed inactive whereas UVa’s MSA is very nice (I know since I live here). Oh, and I’m Pakistani by heritage but born and raised here (travelled there a few times). Not sure how I got on this thread but thought it may help =]
Any other advice? And are there significant amounts of people coming to either of these from Pakistan? Since numbers of Pakistanis seems to correlate with number of Muslims.

Kosher is Jewish Halal food. Just thought you should know. But from what my father has told me about this stuff, Kosher is as close to Halal as you can get. Because, although they might be prepared by Jews, the chicken and the goats have the name of Allah said before being sacrificed. I am not an expert on this matter so correct me if I am wrong.

I think Muslims ccan be found in almost all the universities…

OH YES! Muslims are everywhere!
@talaltq Finding Pakistanis gets more important if you are outside Pakistan. People always like to be around people with similar background and stuff…

Islam is the second largest religion in the world, so yeah Muslims are everywhere…

BTW, here is a question for you guys: UK or USA for undergrad, and why?

@mohammad: you’re right, most muslims agree that kosher (meat) can be eaten as halal; the other practices, however, aren’t (like seperating meat from dairy). plus, they have vegan meat options so I’m not so much worried about food as I am about having a community of active Muslims that are engaged in the university and are still practicing.

and yea, having pakistanis is nice. I’m part of a scholars program at WashU so I’m not worried about making friends. I’d just like to have a couple of friends that I can depend on to go out for biryani with when I miss home food, or watch that occasional Indian movie :)

@foodscience: they should be. but at some universities the number of muslims seems pretty deceiving because a lot of them closet their religion and some when asked about their faith, say not religious. it’s unfortunate.

oh, and I know nothing about the UK. I can say American universities are pretty amazing though :)

@FoodScience07
I will be going to UK since rankings are way more important to me than regions. And getting in a good-ranked university in USA is EXPENSIVE! My fees at Manchester is 14200 Pounds. With a 2000 Pound scholarship, it is 12200. Best part is it is 4 years. AND I will get a Masters after the fourth year. AND the third year is Industrial placement. SO I will have to pay the fees for three years. That third year is like 2000 pounds. AND I will ALSO get paid in the industrial year!
SO, for ME UK IS THE BEST OPTION BY A HUGE MARGIN!

Thats great - the industrial placement sounds interesting…are u doing engineering by any chance?

Guys has anyone recieved his/her I20 yet?

How about you guys tell us where you are going AND for what major…

@Crozet: You are welcome. Hmmm, then I suggest you contact someone at UVa’s MSA for information regarding food and activities. Moreover, Kosher food is considered Halal for us since the Jews invoke the name of Allah before slaughtering the animals. Feel free to eat that food whereever you go. If I were you, I’d go to Washington since I’d be away from my family and that’s a part of life. One can’t stay stuck to them forever. And, you’ll be going there as a scholar! Do check these places on Facebook for networking I doubt I was helpful but I figured just in case… :P

@Foodscience: Muslims are found everywhere but it does not mean Halal food would be easily available there too. I’ll be going to McMaster University for Business (Finance) Inshallah!

@FoodScience7 Yes, it is Materials Science and Engineering. At Manchester.

But, I got a scholarship at UofA! So I might go THERE! For Engineering, of course!

Wbu FoodScience7? Where and what?

any updates to the enrolled list?
