* The Official UC Transfer Late-night Discussion Thread*

Yeah I bet. Wow, okay lol I thought you were in like 6 or 7 classes on the quarter system or something ridiculous. Still though, that’s amazing. You pumped to be leaving Santa Cruz?

I visited about a month ago, and I can’t say I really liked much of anything about it…The Italian sandwich deli we went to in downtown Santa Cruz was pretty good I guess.

I have a huge love/hate relationship with Santa Cruz. When I first visited, I was wondering “Where am I?” But to tell you the truth, I really started appreciating the place after a few quarters. The courses and faculty here are really great, so I think I’ll miss that aspect of the school itself. I also have really close friends here now (dorm life was AMAZING for me), so I think I’ll miss that a lot. I just think the school has a lot of bad rap for hippies and overall strangeness. Of course those things are still on campus, but I think UCSC is really becoming modernized as of late. I RARELY encounter all those stereotypes that people keep talking about.

My only major con is that if you aren’t interested in accounting here, job placement is a little tough for business econ students. I’m not sure how true that is for a really motivated student, but it’s not that assuring. However, I’m already in the works of an internship at the World Bank because my research advisor here is recommending me (he used to consult there).

Also the only reason I went here out of high school instead of going to UCSD, was for the 3/2 Dual Engineering program with Berkeley (get a degree in business econ from UCSC and a degree in engineering math/statistics at Cal), but I soon realized I didn’t want to take that route. So now I’m trying to transfer the hard way I guess.

Oh ok, yeah that makes sense. Well I’m glad that you’ve figured out what you really want to do, and that you’re not miserable at UCSC or anything. That’s also awesome that you’re working towards that internship…I should get one of those lol.

Where do you want to be in the fall?

Yeah, internships are great. Although the World Bank one will only be during the summer, I’m trying to extend my current internship to next year so I can work part time/they can pay for part of my tuition.

I’d really like to go to Cal, Davis, or UCLA. What about you? Is it safe to assume your “Location:” status says it all?

Ironically, your Top 3 are the same as mine. However, at this point, I’m only really hoping for Cal. I’ve never been anywhere and felt so…hmm I guess comfortable. Everything from Telegraph to the beautiful buildings to the prestige to the Psych program is just the epitome of what I’ve been looking for.

I really feel like it’s the right fit for me. I’m pretty much split between UCLA and Davis as back-ups though. If I were to receive the UCD Cal-Aggie Scholarship thing, I guess I would probably go to Davis over UCLA though. Otherwise, it’s sort of a toss up.

Yeah, I REALLY want Cal as well. If you ever have the chance, try visiting Brown University. I thought only Berkeley would give me that feeling you experienced, but Brown gave it to me 2x.

Ya know, I was actually considering applying to Brown, but I figured it would be too expensive, and that I probably wouldn’t have a chance with only a 3.7. I could’ve maybe (big maybe) squeaked in with some crazy incredible essay, but even if I were admitted I doubt I could afford the OOS tuition. I’ve definitely heard great things about it though.

Did you apply there?

It’s a private, so you don’t have to worry about the OOS tuition. You just have to worry about that private school cost (FA is really good for some schools but not for Brown transfers). No, I only applied to a few private schools because I’d prefer Cal/LA over most of the other private schools for the price.

I attend UCSC like Midnight, and I agree with a lot of what he has to say. It is funny because I feel like the top students here are fairly happy because they take advantage of all the extra opportunities that this school provides because a very small percent of students are motivated to do big things in the world. I just popped my head in this year trying to get involved, and was nabbed by about 5 or so different activities, and gained officer positions in a couple of them. Some of my close friends who are also doing well (and considering transferring like me) have had similar experiences. This school is not as bad as people make it out to be.

Though, I am sure those of us who are transferring all have our reasons. For me, I want to get away from a school that has the stigma of “liberal hippie protesting potheads.” And like Midnight pointed out, unless you are going into accounting, the job options are pretty grim. Our job fair is embarrassing. No, I am not going to spend four years at a University to work at Target. Accounting however, is heavily recruited. Unfortunately, I am not LOVING my accounting classes, so I am not sure if this is the direction that I want to go.

Oh, and, top choices = Davis/Cal/UCLA in no particular order :)

@ cali trumpet I’m pretty sure that Cal has much MUCH more of a reputation for “liberal hippie protesting potheads” than USC does. USC just has a reputation for Spoiled rich kids

@Solid: Eh I dunno. I realize there are a lot of hippies at Cal as well, but the school is substantially more prestigious and it’s student body is much stronger academically.

@solidblue cali means University of CA, SC

not trojans

Interesting. Midnght, cali trumpet and I all have the same Top 3! Right on guys.

Also, I’m glad UCSC isn’t as bad as the stereotypes/rumors suggest, but that isn’t great that there are few job opportunities. I’m hoping that by living near Cal/Davis/LA I’ll be setting myself up in/near amazing cities with a ton of different jobs.

For now though, I’m just hoping to get into these colleges lol.

USC rules.

daaaamn it! i thought i could stay away from cc. hahah
