* The Official UC Transfer Late-night Discussion Thread*

■■■■■ wth is the valley bump?

Solidblu- I don’t think Santa Clara gets it. The Valley Bump is just something my honors counselor at CC told me about. I live in the Central Valley ( Merced, Turlock, Modesto etc.) and there are not very many transfers for one reason or another. Additionally, reps from Cal, UCLA, San Diego, and etc. don’t come to Modesto JC and apparently many of the UC’s feel it necessary to provide this ‘bump’ in order to get students on track toward an education both for themselves and future families.

To add to that, the Central Valley has a notably poor economy consistently, along with pregnancy rates, gangs, drugs, etc. so i guess UC’s either feel compelled…or pressured??

I’ve heard of the valley bump, but unless I hear it out of an admission officer’s mouth, I wouldn’t believe it. I do not need any false hope.

Ya, I know Empathyinanarchy…but it’s nice to just dream :)

Alright, I thought this was ‘The late night’ thread…what is up guys? I’m here, smoking cigarettes, listening to npr, compulsively checking my status’s while easily procrastinating on the study of American Political Thought :/

This late night in the title refers to an insomniac’s late night, not the late night of calmed smoker. Wait until 12-2, it gets jumpin’ up in here, up in here.

let the insomnia-fest begin

Jump Jumpp

Where’s that party animal emil?

he’s around here somewhere… hahah i love how ■■■■■■■■ i am in some of my classes now. i seriously had compile error galore in one of my programs a while ago. apparently i decided a pointer can hold a bool…not point to it(yes…i know ***). fail

Well, it’s not your forte or your favorite thing, as you’ve said, but that’s pretty funny. I’m experiencing similar hiccups. I’m still a 4.0 with a lot of units, but my attention is slipping. I’m usually a few weeks, if not a month, ahead in my classes and I’m only about 2 ahead now. I’ve given myself a few too many days off. And this is when I should be honing my study habits if anything.

I hear you Empathy- I’m lucky that I have a history teacher who actually challenges us this semester. Very UC style: tons of reading, long essay exams but no hints or help on what it could be about, immediate kick out at the sound of a ringtone, no tolerance for chatter… I love it because I’m really scared that CC has made me lazy. I’ll work ahead and then just have all this free time… the quarter system is going to be a wake up!

EEEEK, essay exams. I had a few in Critical Composition, but it was not very fun. I had a Chem prof that would confiscate cellphones for 2 weeks should they ring. I would turn mine off.

And I don’t want the quarter system. That’s one reason I want Cal so bad!

Haha- I applied, but I never thought of it that way…

Is a professor even ALLOWED to do that? Mine doesn’t care if you’re in the middle of an exam- if your phone rings, you’re done.

And his essay exams certainly aren’t fun, but I mean how often do UCs give scantron tests? From what I have heard, they are non-existent. What have you heard?

The valley bump? I have never heard of this before but as a MJC student I realllllly hope it exists! Ya it is actually quite frustrating that barely any reps come to our campus. Maybe I would have applied to more UCs if I had gotten info about different programs from reps from other schools. Unfortunately I only ever saw the UC Merced rep who was definitely nice and helpful (cute too) but I would never ever go to Merced… Valley bump… Lol

No scantron tests… Darn… I’m an amazing test taker that way… I really lack confidence (and ability) in my writing. This summer I really want to see if I can find an excellent writing seminar. This will be a necessity if I want to be able to perform well if I go to Cal…
Anyone know of any?

Why have scantrons when you have student graders? A perceptive instructor of mine overheard me comparing UC education to CC education, and they made a point during lecture explaining why CC tests were generally easier than UC tests – easier tests are easier to grade.

I haven’t heard anything about scantrons, just department-wide 40-50% averages on midterms in my major.

And I think the cellphone thing was just a threat, but I didn’t want to take the chance. They claimed that because it was in the syllabus, students were agreeing to it by staying enrolled.

I personally hate scantrons. I need my partial credit. Most of the mistakes I make are simple, and scantrons don’t discriminate between not understanding and making a mistake.

I do not know of any writing seminars. Luckily, my major is far removed from writing. I love doing it creatively… but I’m too structured and rigid to be good at it.

It’s funny now that I am about to transfer I have found that my classes that I enjoy the most and am
acceling at are my math and science classes… Oh well personally I blame hooked on phonics for getting me addicted to phonics at 4 and although tought me to read very well at a young age it resulted in an inability to spell… And I guess I’ll blame my lack of writing skills on being such an excellent reader that I was always put in accelerated English classes that never really went over the basics in sentence structure. I definitely think enlish needs to be seperated into literature and composition at a younger age.
