Things You Are Grateful For

My daughter texted me that she had gotten her flu shot, so that was one less thing for me to worry about! When I replied that all she had to do now was vote, she informed me she did that last week. Grateful she’s “adulting”.

That;s so sad, LOL!

Suddenly this old grateful song, sung in rounds at summer camp, filled my mind
For Health and Strength and Daily bread we praise thy name o lord.

Health and strength.

Rain, after the driest September in Maine’s recorded history.

Right now? NyQuil

All of the above.

Especially health, freedom from worrying about money, and offspring who are adulting successfully.

I feel grateful for so much:

I have a wonderful wife who is a great partner in life
ShawWife and I and the kids are all basically healthy for our ages
The good luck to buy a fabulous house on a riverbank in conservation and agricultural land just before the pandemic (so relaxing and in fact spiritual). I can look out the window while I am working and see Muscovy ducks swimming around – they actually show up at our door for breakfast – and osprey and blue herons and predators of many varieties and even a bald eagle.
A career/calling that I continue to love
The fact that our kids are a) not little as Pandemic living looks hard with little kids; and b) are successful enough as young adults that they don’t need to move home to survive (though we would be happy to have them if we could); and c) living together happily and supporting each other.
We feel fortunate to hit a place where we are not anxious about money (alas, we are still anxious about things like the election and the Pandemic).

Gin martinis. I see the need for a whole lot more in the next few weeks.

Does “manageable stress” count as something to be thankful for ?

A working boiler!!! (And crossing fingers it stays that way for the rest of the season)

Sunshine and a slight breeze with a comfy lounge chair.

Ponies to enjoy nice fall days with, esp young ponies willingly learning lessons for the first time.

I am grateful for the man who has been my son’s psychiatrist for 9 years. He has gone above and beyond for our family, repeatedly. Now he is trying to get mental health legislation passed in Maine and he’s asked me to help him.

I’m grateful that 2020 will soon be a memory. I am also grateful The Debate tonight is cancelled, therefore H cannot subject me to 90 more minutes I will never get back (yay!), and finally, I have finished an assignment I have been procrastinating over = phew!

Beyond grateful that our sweet grandson’s Covid test was negative.

I am grateful that my family is well and healthy, that oldest son’s ankle injury has healed so he can return to his job as a letter carrier, that middle son tonight told me that he has decided to return to school to finish his degree as soon as colleges open up again after the pandemic (he tried online classes pre-covid and didn’t like them), that my boss is no longer talking about people returning to the office anytime soon, that I have a house, food and, after 60 years, finally, a dog I actually like and want around.

I feel grateful that I am able to donate to food drives and other causes without causing hardship to my family and I am grateful that my children are charitable in their own ways.

My DD texted me “momma! I paid the rent and I’m so excited!” She graduated in May and was hired by a DC consulting firm. So thankful she navigated the online courses after GWU’s campus shutdown, kept the internship (worked remotely), was hired full time and paid her rent!

Dang, @alh I can’t drink right now.

Grateful that my girls turned out so well. They can be frustrating, but they are more than I hoped for, way back when I answered a question in their pre-K and K applications. (It was something about what we hope for, as they progress through life.)

And by extension, I’m grateful for all the good kids out there, including CC families. I’ve seen a lot of kids through my work with the college, learned a lot about yours on CC, and it gives me great faith and hope. I’m just sorry they’re faced with so many unusual challenges today.

My D’s surgery went well and she is back home recovering. It will be 4-6 weeks but fingers crossed she will be healthy afterwards. It has been a tough start to her marriage (their Aug. wedding was downsized from 200 to 9 people due to covid and now this) but her H has been wonderful. Here’s hoping they have a healthy and happy future together!

Love having D home. Since she’s at loose ends for the time being, we’re paying her to cook, run errands, etc. The arrangement works out well for everyone. Yesterday, she made the 60-mile round trip to take her disabled brother back to his apartment, and then worked on dinner (vegetable Thai curry, yum!) while I practiced piano.
