This year's Oscars thread

They definitely included Doris Day.

John Singleton too.

Peter Mayhew too.

"The 2020 Oscars ceremony was watched by the smallest audience the awards show has ever received.

23.6 million viewers tuned in … that’s a 20 percent 6 million viewer drop-off from last year."

My husband and I weren’t Meryl Streep fans – we called her Sterile Meep, lol – and then he saw “Bridges of Madison County.” Something in her performance really moved him, and he changed his mind. “She really is amazing,” he said, and I agree. I don’t love her in every movie, but I do admire her most of the time.

For me – and I know this is totally subjective and personal – she seems too often mechanical. She’s not the type of actress who MELTS into her part the way, for example, Jessica Chastain or Michelle Williams do. She always seems to me to be “acting.”

Anyway, just wanted to tell you that my Sterile Meep-calling husband really liked her in Bridges of Madison County, too.

I don’t get the Luke Perry issue, he was tv soap actor, he wouldn’t have ever been an Oscar contender, right? Do they list every dead actor of the year? Even TV people? That would get old.

Luke Perry was in Buffy the Vampire Slayer  ., a number of lesser movies (in addition to this TV movies and shows)…and his last role was Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

^sorry…my bad…couldn’t remember all of them as they were zipping by…

Turner Classic Movies does a wonderful short memorial segment every December. It’s a bit longer than the Oscar “In Memoriam,” but still less than 5 minutes long. I like that it includes very short sound bites, international actors, and behind-the-scenes contributors. This year’s was especially well done, and included everyone @gosmom mentions in #139 above except Ken Kercheval.

Beautiful song by Alice Boman. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktwlkY46gVQ

It’s released in December, so Kirk Douglas and others who have recently passed will be in next year’s segment.

Ummm, that sure seemed like “exactly comparing” to me. And yeah, given the age difference, a little harsh.

Once you are in your 50’s, an eleven year age difference in terms of youthful appearance is pretty significant imo unless you’ve had a fair amount of **expertly done ** plastic surgery.

Brad Pitt…long hair…short hair…as my mother used to say, “I wouldn’t kick him out of bed for eating crackers!” I actually like him more as he’s aged! And he seems to have a sense of humor about himself, which is nice to see.

I still miss Joan Rivers at the Oscars, but never more than when Kristen Wig showed up in that red dress!
